I'm always striving to read more classics, although for the most part the intention stays just that. Hopefully 2024 will be better in that regard.
Wishing you the best of luck - Have a great reading year!

Good luck with your reading goals! Have fun and happy reading :)

I'm not necessarily new here, but since I haven't been very active on goodreads in a veeery long time, I thought, I might as well re-introduce myself, now that I've found my groove again.
My online name is Jeanne Phi - a word play on my actual name that sounds a bit like "young girl" in french, which I find hilarious, ever since I passed the 30 year mark. I'm from Austria, my first language is German, English my second. I read mostly in those two. Every now and then pretentiousness dictates I try my hands on a book in French or Italian, but it mostly ends with a DNF, because I read to enjoy, and looking up vocabulary isn't my definition of enjoyment.
Nowadays, I mostly enjoy fantasy and adjacent genres (sci-fi, dystopias, surrealism, ghost stories, magical thinking, etc.).
I used to be quite judgmental about my own reading habits, thinking I couldn't count certain authors among my favourites, because - "objectively" - I had read better. It's hard for me to name my overall favourites, too, for this particular reason, so I'll stick to the next reads by recent favourite authors I am really looking forward to:
R.F. Kuang - I am trying to hold out for as long as possible to finish the Poppy Wars Series, but I will most likely wish for it for the next occasion.
Adalyn Grace - I loved Belladonna and I am going to devour the rest of the series - given that I find them in the same format as the first paperback, I really hate it when they don't look the same.
Kimberly Lemming - I can't get most of her Mead Mishaps at the local book stores, otherwise they would have been devoured already. The first one surprised me and made me realise that I love her whole approach to the genre.
Erin A. Craig - House of Salt and Sorrow scared me half to death and I'm not sure how. So I hope to figure it out with House of Roots and Ruin.
My goal for 2024 is 104 books - 2 each week - and it is significantly higher than the last few years. However, since I have given myself permission to buy as many books as I want and count every smutty e-book I find, I think I'll be good. I'm currently even 17 books ahead of schedule (that's a first).

I completely relate to the pretentiousness of reading in a foreign language. Sometimes I'll catch myself trying to read a book in Portuguese and then realize I haven't actively maintained the language in about 10 years.
I hope you have a fantastic reading journey in 2024. It sounds like you're well on your way to reach your goal :)
Wishing you lots of luck. Happy reading!

Thanks for the welcome, Lisa :)
I have this whole shelf (technically TBR, but let's be honest, not gonna happen in this lifetime) that I just call the "pretentious" section. There's foreign languages I will likely never master, old classics that bore me just by thinking of them, non-fiction that other's thought I might enjoy, and so on. I will try one of them every once in a while, but it's not good for my ego ;)

Have you read Giana Darling's "The Fallen Men" series?
I hope you have a great 2024 with lots of fantastic books :)
You'll be in good company here amongst many other bookaholics and booklovers :)
Good luck with your reading goals!

Thank you. I started the first book of that series but didn't finished it. The teacher and student relationship didn't sit well with me. I see that a lot of people love her books. I might tried to read the other books in the series, I am just so anal about reading in order.

Fair enough. Well, they are all standalones so you definitely don't have to read them in order but I understand. You might want to skip, or at least look into the second book, if you ever decide to continue on. I have a hunch that it might not work for you either.

I'm Stacey from Victoria, B.C. (Canada). I'm just getting back into reading for fun and hope to never have to read another journal article or academic text book! I tend read mystery / suspense and some psychological thriller, but want to tack a classic this year as well. Looking forward to connecting to new friends on here! My reading goal this year is 20 and I think I'm ahead of the game right now.

Welcome to the group, Stacey :)
Here's to never having to read academic texts ever again!
I love a good psychological thriller myself. Lately though, I'm feeling a bit overexposed to the oversaturation in the genre. Like it all blends together, nothing really stands out, and everything is all kind of "meh". Hoping it'll pass soon enough.
Wishing you a fantastic reading year, and good luck finding classics that appeal to your reading tastes.
Happy reading!

I'm Sainabou from the UK
I read in English :)
My reading goal is 100 this year
My favourite genres are romance, fantasy, science fiction, mysteries (tbh I read everything except horror lol)

100 books is an amazing goal, Sainabou, and I see you're already well on your way, with a great deal of fantastic books :)
Wishing you the best of luck with your reading goals.
Happy reading!

I like reading anything as long as it holds my interest and gets my juices going in the reading department.
I found you by just looking at the popular groups on here and thought I'd jump on.
My supposedly reading total is 20. But I've read 12 books so far and will pass it but won't be changing it as I love seeing the extra numbers to what I've read.

Nice to meet everyone!

You've definitely joined the most amazing group to discuss books with.
I am looking forward to hopefully seeing your name in group / buddy reads in the future.
Good luck with your reading goals this year. Luckily, there's still plenty of time to catch up and read 20 books in 2024.

When I joined Goodreads, I was in a major slump. While that sometimes still happens, I have found some wonderful, encouraging multi generational "friends" from around the world that have suggested books that have made a difference.

Hello Elizabeth, greetings from Sydney! Yes, I was in the same boat as you. I have been an avid reader during my teens to early 20's, but it gradually fell through as life happened for me. I'm hoping that being in a group of wonderful book-lovers would help me get out of it too! Would love to receive recommendations as I go through the year and achieve my reading goal!

I looked through your shelf, but don't have much to say about any of the books you¨ve added so far since I havenẗ read them. You're more than welcome to have a looksee through my read shelf and see if anything piques your interest.
What types of books do you enjoy reading?

I have been an avid reader my entire life. At the current time, I read a lot of mystery, thriller, true crime, and historical fiction. I am a cancer survivor and find that the brain fog (chemo side effect) makes reading non-fiction harder but I am reading a few here and there to slowly warm back up to it. I used to read a lot about the economy and politics but have not been able to get back into that.
I was recommended this group, I believe I have a few GR friends in this group so I don't remember if it was a friend who specifically recommended it or if it was the GR algorithm. I do get a lot of recommendations though so the thing about this group that caught my eye was the fun positive reinforcement of everyone's reading goals! I love the idea of a place to cheer for other's reading accomplishments.
My goal this year will be 52 books. This is significant for me because precancer this was my goal every year. I think I hit it more often than not, and even when I did not hit it on GR there were books I read those years that I didn't record here, I wasn't super meticulous about that before. But during treatments, I found it almost impossible to read. I would sit with a book for months before I would admit to myself that I just couldn't retain what I was reading. I've come a long way since then and am so proud of myself and my reading this year so far. I am already ahead of schedule and am participating in three reading challenges and three in-person book clubs.

I'm Alan from Florida, USA. I usually read horror but have recently discovered Lit RPG books, which are a lot of fun and currently on book 2 of the Wheel of Time. I found this group while playing around on Goodreads and thought it would be a good way to keep me motivated. I set my Goodreads goal for 30 books and currently have read 15 so far this year.

Good luck with your goals!

I hope you're having an amazing year so far, and that it keeps up in the upcoming months.
Happy reading!

I found this group through browsing through goodreads for new releases.
My reading goal is read as much as I can, I dropped off reading and want to get back into it so the more I read the better for 2024. I would like to try and get into audio books as well as physical books, for when I am in the car but I need to work out how to do this without it costing me a fortune.
Great to be here!

I really enjoy true crime, as well, even though I've been getting further and further away from it as of late.
But I am eagerly looking forward to getting my hands on Broadway Butterfly: Vivian Gordon: The Lady Gangster of Jazz Age New York.
I hope that 2024 becomes an amazing reading year, filled with lots of great books :)
Good luck with your goals!

Welcome so happy to have you. I am not sure if you have it in the UK but everand is great for listening to audiobooks. I hope this helps.

Welcome, Suzanne! I read audiobooks almost exclusively, free through the library. I'm in the US, but I imagine UK offers e-audio as well. I download books remotely and play them on my phone using an audiobook player app. Good luck!

I've read some really great books throughout the past years, so I'm always up for giving recommendations.
To keep things short here though, I'd prefer to recommend you have a look through my shelves and see if there's anything that piques your interest. There's a couple of books I've read but haven't rated (mostly because I forget to do so), but I'm happy to talk about anything, so if you want to know more or whatever, just let me know. 😊
I saw that you'll be joining this month's group read for Flowers for Algernon. That's great - The more, the merrier! Hope you enjoy it :)
Best of luck with your reading journey in 2024. Happy reading!

My name is Juan! I am from the Southern Oregon area! My favorite book genre has to be Horror! Goal for the rest of the year is reading 9 books! ☺️ happy to be part of this group!

Last year I majorly got back into reading after several years of only getting through 4-5 books, my reading goal this year is 60+ books!
