Melissa | 597 comments Here are some useful links:

UNO rules and the basics: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Planning Spreadsheet (Loki Tracker): https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...

Put your books on this spreadsheet. You can write them in as you start them, or as you finish them up - or if you are just planning to read them this month. I'll look for the "read date" and that they are on your UNO shelf. Include all of the ways this book might fit. I'll go through and see where it makes the most sense.

If you don't feel comfortable using spreadsheets, that is okay! You can just post on this thread. If you choose this way, please post:

Book Title:
Date Read:
Color (if there is one):
How it fits:

You don't need to do both! Add it to the spreadsheet, or post on the thread :)

Cover Color Lists:
Green: https://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/...
Yellow: https://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/...
Blue: https://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/...
Red: https://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/...

Here is a good site if you're just not sure if your book is 50% of a color or not: https://labs.tineye.com/color/
We can also judge as a team as to whether or not it fits.

AR Bookfind: https://www.arbookfind.com/UserType.a...
This is a good place to find out how many words there are in a book (check this if your read is a middle grade book).

We'd love to hear about the books you read! This is a great place to chat about books. Let us know what you're reading, and your thoughts about it!

Melissa | 597 comments Hello team!
I'm Melissa, your captain! I am excited to be a part of team Loki. I know Vicki! I'm excited to meet the rest of you.

Here's some prompts to get us started!
📕Where are you from? / What do you like to do?
📗Have you participated in UNO / other challenges?
📙Have you started stacking colored books yet?
📘What are your favorite genres?

📕I am from the Northeast USA! I like to read :) and hang out with my pets. I also like board games.
📗Yes! I have co-captained many times, but this is my first official captain-ship. Let me know if you have ideas for our spreadsheet :) Color coordination is not my forte.
📙Yes! I have a stack of books I'm hoping to read and then part with.
📘I have been reading a lot of non-fiction - which is more challenging for these types of challenges. But no worries! I also like sci-fi, historical fiction, and any random book I find lying around.

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 510 comments Melissa, I don't know if you remember, but I have 22 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. :) I watch my 2 youngest grandchildren mostly on Mondays and Tuesdays from 4:30 AM until 6:00 or 6:15 PM, so those two days I don't get on the SS much. Right now the SS is only in VIEW mode so I can't put anything on it now anyway. I will always have my phone, so if at any time you (or other teammates) need me, please PM me because I always see those but not my notifications. Also, I can't usually see all of the words on a thread when on my phone but I usually can in a PM unless it's a monthly newsletter.

I'm only friends with Brigia and Melissa W but I have friend requested the all of you other teammates.

Ingeborg (redrum) | 410 comments Hi, team! Good to meet you all. I'm very excited for UNO!

📕 I am Ingeborg from Norway. I like to read, obviously, and I have a horse, an Icelandic, so I do spend a fair bit of time at the barn with him and various humans who also hang out there.
📗I have played UNO every year since 16, been co-captain once. I've also played some other challenges, including TT last year. I prefer team challenges for the social and teamwork aspect.
📙 I may have been perusing my shelves for coloured books, yes. 👀
📘 Favourite genre is fantasy, but I also like historical fiction and the occasional cozy crime/mystery. But I'll read many other genres if a book catches my eye. :)

Looks like you're missing my uno shelf in that post, Melissa. I've made one and named it uno-24.

message 14: by Brigia (new)

Brigia | 51 comments Hi, everybody - I'm excited for this :-)

📕I'm from Germany. I have two small kids, so I'm a bit busy - reading is pretty much the only hobby I make time for that I do just for myself at the moment. Unless playing with my kids counts - I've been ice-skating for the first time since I was a kid myself this year and it was fun!
📗I have played all kinds of team challenges before, but never UNO for some reason. I'm a bit confused, to be honest, and may need some directions - but I can usually find a book for any task, if I know what we need.
📙Uhm...nope, but I might do that now?
📘Fantasy and Romance are my favorite genres, but I'll read anything and am currently attempting to read through last year's Goodreads awards nominees.

Welcome Brigia!
Ice skating! Excellent. Do you skate on ponds or lakes or indoors?

You can ask any question you'd like. I've opened the spreadsheet (thanks Vicki!) so you can play around there. Let me know if there is a confusing part!

Look for books with the letters: O, Z, T, H, F, I, S, V, E, N, K, P, or a book that someone else read.

Are you familiar with spell outs?

We skated on a mini-rink at an amusement park nearby, though we might try out the rink in the next town, too - my four year old loved it!

I think I'm going to figure it out - I'm guessing we see what kinds of books we would be reading anyway and then have a look at what tasks we're missing, right?

Thanks for getting us organized, Melissa!

Aidy | 7 comments Hello Team Loki!

I am brand new to GoodReads, the Perks group, and team challenges. I am looking forward to learning how to navigate this site and am hoping a group setting will encourage accountability to foster a new habit (ie tracking my books on a website)

📕I currently live in Virginia in the US. I enjoy reading, knitting, golfing, and spending time with my family.
📗I have not
📙I am not sure about cover colors, I checked a few on the website, but they did not come back 50% anything. I will continue to hunt around. May need to count on the suggestions from previous years.
📘I read widely. I like all kinds of books. My favorite book is usually the one I am currently reading or the one I am reading next. I don't usually gravitate toward romance or fantasy, but do not avoid anything, once it catches my attention.

📗Yes! I've played Uno a few times now. I also recently tried Tower Teams and Clue, which was fun.
📙I have not. Better start looking.
📘My favourite genres are mystery/thrillers, historical fiction, and fantasy.

message 27: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 510 comments Just FYI, I had been placed on two teams inadvertently, but UNO Pixie has let me know that this is the team she's going to leave me on. That being said, here's my Q/A:

Here's some prompts to get us started!
📕 I am originally from Dallas, Texas, place of my birth. I like to read! Bet you'd never have guessed that! I love watching mysteries, too many reality shows such as Bachelor/Bachelorette, Big Brother, and others I won't admit to right now. LOVE playing with my grandchildren who range in age from 29 all the way down to nearly 4 (and I have 22 grandkids), plus I have 6 greats! :)
📗 I have participated in UNO since 2019, so this current one will be my 6th one and I LOVE it!
📙 If you knew my life as of late, you'd never have asked me that! lol No, I haven't started yet but I will! Promise!
📘 My favorite genres are still evolving but I absolutely love historical fiction, historical romance; mystery, thriller, psychological thriller, sports romance, contemporary romance, some fantasy (think Sarah J. Maas & Jennifer Armentrout).

I will start adding my planned books to the SS tomorrow since I've been up since 4:00 AM and it's now 8:47. Watched my two grandbabies today, Lily (5) and Juju (3), so it was a LONG day. Juju (you'll love this) brought me SEVEN books he wanted me to read today, but he brought them and wanted me to read them twice! lol Lily goes to kindergarten so Juju takes advantage of that one-on-one time. Then I took them to McDonald's to play and their dad picked them up there. Usually I watch them until 6:00 or 6:15 but this week my SIL is in welding classes all week so he gets home early, around 4:30-4:45 so I'm happy! :)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 510 comments Question for confirmation: We cannot read nonfiction for this challenge, correct? As I recall in the past we couldn't because they technically don't have "characters." I did have a RED book until I remembered that so double checking in case it's changed or I remember incorrectly.

We can read non-fiction for the challenge, but the spell-out is more limited as it doesn't really have characters, as you said. Title and author initials still work for spell-out though!

message 30: by Ingeborg (last edited Jan 17, 2024 02:44AM) (new)

Ingeborg (redrum) | 410 comments This is a long-shot, but is this blue enough for blue? Tineye gives me approx 40% blue, and a lot of black and purple otherwise, so I suspect it is not.

📕I'm from New York currently living in Connecticut in the US. / My main hobbies are reading, golfing and watching sports (preferably with a couple beers & maybe a whiskey or two)

It only comes up a little over 38% on TinEye and it's supposed to be over 50%. So I have been bypassing quite a few color books that come up in the high 40% range due to the requirement. I thought we had to use TinEye?

Absolutely! I would love to do both. I do already have Feb. 8 set up for a buddy read for Lady Tan's Circle of Women so when I have the thread I'll let you know. I'm excited! I am adding quite a few more books, mostly from the Goodreads Choice Awards Nominees. I'm reading the Winners when the Goodreads Choice Awards group reads them, so the winners are spread out throughout the year. Just let me know when you see books on the SS if you want to do any of them with me. Most of them will already have a buddy read date but of course that's flexible.
