Joan Didion wrote The Year of Magical Thinking after her husband of 40 years died at the kitchen table, and it helped me when mine of 41 years went to take a nap which he never woke up from. Your brain rewires when a shock is that great. She explains it all.

Frankenstein was one of my favorite reads of the year
I'm getting hung up on "everyone" and "should." Call me cynical (proud member of Gen X here!), but I know way too many people for whom you could recommend the most simple, easy-to-read, basic... and they wouldn't get it. Vroom..... right over their heads, like an airplane, the sonic boom to follow. People who could never grasp the message of Green Eggs and Ham, much less the profundity of Bartholomew and the Oobleck.
