What were the best books you read this year (2023)? Can you pick a very best one?

I haven't been able to read much since going back to work and taking on the role of PTA President at my kids' school, but I loved The Henna Artist and The Secret Keeper of Jaipur by Alka Joshi.
I loved A gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles and Piranesi by Susanna Clarke best. Really amazing books (although Peranesi is not everybody’s favourite!)
STARMAN, I loved the title, Star Songs of an Old Primate.PIEN, I also loved A Gentleman in Moscow, too and would have picked it, but I read it last year or maybe earlier.
I put all your favorites on my tbr for Christmas, so thanks! Looking at the books I read this year, there’s some among the first ones I don’t even remember! (The title still sounds familiar, but what it’s about??) It’s like a new book erases an old one, well, apart from the best ones. Am I the only one forgetting so easily?

I started the Murderbot series this year, and they've all been 5 star reads for me.
My first (non-Murderbot) 5 star read was Remarkably Bright Creatures back in April. Candace is spot on. It was superb.
In June, I read A Closed and Common Orbit, which is defo up there. In my review, I wrote Becky Chambers writes science fiction for the soul. It's such a lovely story about being, belonging, and friendship.
Then in July I read White Teeth and was so surprised. I had no idea what it was about, but I was not prepared for how cutting, funny, insightful, real, and frustrating it could be. Very well written.
And for a best read of a book originally published in 2023, Demon Copperhead was pretty damn good.

Oh yeah, I need to read Demon Copperhead. Ahem, I want credit for saying Remarkable bright Creatures was superb! 🥰
Sorry, Candace!!! I'm not even sure Nanci is in this group. See why Ive been absent. I just can't keep up.😬😬😬😬
Thanks to all who recommended Remarkably Bright Creatures! I couldn't resist picking it up and thoroughly enjoyed it!
