Kaia | 660 comments One month in, and I'm already at 4 out of my goal of 17! I may need to raise my goal, but I'm going to leave it alone for now. In January, I read:

My Real Children by Jo Walton
The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi by Shannon Chakraborty
Where Late the Sweet Birds Sang by Kate Wilhelm
Dreamsnake by Vonda N McIntyre

All solidly good books which I enjoyed.

message 109: by Meredith (last edited Feb 02, 2024 05:41PM) (new)

Meredith | 1775 comments In January, I read (via audiobook) The Quantum Magician and Brown Girl in the Ring. Both books have really good narrators.

So I am at 2/17 for the year, and on a prime number too.

I am about mid-way through The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi and really enjoying it.

message 110: by HeyT (new)

HeyT | 504 comments I just hit seven read for the challenge this year. I recently finished The Moon is a Harsh Mistress and The Quantum Magician. If I had to pick between the two I'd go with Quantum Magician because it had a more entertaining heist in it.

message 111: by Lamilla (new)

Economondos | 503 comments Quick update: 5 books read thus far: Assassin's Apprentice, Old Man's War, The Lathe of Heaven, The Princess Bride, and Frankenstein: The 1818 Text.

That isn't my reading order, but rather my ratings for each book. Loved Assassin's Apprentice and ordered the sequels, but would not recommend the original text of Frankenstein to a modern reader.

Let's see what comes up later in the year!

message 117: by Dj (new)

Dj | 2364 comments This is an uncertain first encounter with an Alien Race. Unlike many of the books I have read recently about first contact, this one is more likely to my mind. Neither side is fully honest with the other and both have things that they are trying to hide from the other. It is more difficult to read since there are so many times when you would expect them to break through the walls and fess up to each other. Of course that doesn't happen. I suppose that is a good thing since it would have made the book shorter. A bit of a timepiece in regards to showing the thoughts of people during the Cold War and a very good reflection of it. A good read.

Kim | 89 comments I thinking I’m going to aim for 13 for my first year. There’s definitely more than that in past group reads that I want to try, but I don’t want to overwhelm myself. I’ve got a few in mind though I’ll probably randomly pick as I go.

1. Piranesi by Susanna Clarke Rating: 4.5/5
2. Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt Rating: 2.5/5
3.The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Le Guin Rating: 2.5/5
4. The Jinn-Bot of Shantiport by Samit Basu Rating: 3/5
5. The Bone Ships by R.J. Barker Rating: 3.25/5

message 124: by Dj (new)

Dj | 2364 comments If you are going to do alternate history it is always easier to do it if you are working in a reality that is different that is not historically accurate. This book does just that a time traveller changes the way things worked for Richard Burton and the gang. This means that any historical inaccuracies are not to be worried about since the line of history has been altered by other events. So fewer things might be enough to break the immersion into the reality of the reader. Which means that the suspension of disbelief is harder to break.

With that said it makes a very good read with the changes only making it easier to go with the flow.

Very nice! I think I'm at the prime number of 5 now, which isn't too bad for me. They are
Piranesi
The Word for World is Forest
The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet
Grass
Semiosis

Hmm ... all women authors. :-)

Looks like we both read Grass. I'm curious to know what you thought of it.

I am finding it somewhat difficult to find some of the books on my list this year. I prefer audiobooks, which doesn't help, but even some of the ebooks are difficult. I have already read many of the books in the club library, so had to pick a few that are older or more obscure. I think I will be doing more actual reading (rather than listening) to many of these.

Currently reading "Legend (Drenai Saga, #1)" by David Gemmell.

Indeed! I'm happy on a couple of books a month and hitting a reading groove so far. Only 2 club books but thinking of making April (my Birthday month, ayyy!) a shelf month. Definitely Nettle & Bone, and maybe The Magicians' Guild too since I've had that paperback for literal years and never read it while the rest of my TBR just leapfrogged it!

The two bookshelf books so far this year for me are:

His Majesty's Dragon
And my re-read of Guards! Guards!

message 144: by DivaDiane (new)

DivaDiane SM | 3675 comments I can’t believe I forgot to come here to crow about finishing Gideon the Ninth!! I started it in 2020 and it has been in my Currently Reading shelf ever since. I wanted to switch to audio and then I never found the right moment. Thanks to Mareike and Anthony the right time was now. And I really enjoyed the audio book!

That makes 5/11

My Real Children
The Adventures of Amina Al-Sirafi
Ship of Magic (reread)
The Terraformers
Gideon the Ninth
