A Fiction Book Written By a Trans Or Nonbinary Author

Yet another fist-pump from me! I own a couple written by Charlie Jane Anders:
All the Birds in the Sky
The City in the Middle of the Night

I can highly recommend Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas and Melissa ( was previously entitled George) by Alex Gino! Author and main character are both trans.

I know there are some nonfiction books out there that qualify by simply substituting the word "nonfiction" for "fiction"! However, we may not want those listed on this prompt's specific listopia since they technically do not fulfill the prompt as written... But please do not hesitate to list them in the comments below!!

We can start with our own Goodreads listopia from 2020:
"Popsugar 2020 - A Book By a Trans or Non-Binary Author"
And another listopia that will help:
"Trans Books by Trans Authors"
Although the prompt doesn't specify that any characters must be trans, etc., this listing is still valid due to the authors being trans/nonbinary.

Listopia is HERE

Heather (heathercarrico) | 1 comments Our Hideous Progeny was really good and would qualify!

message 3: by Jennifer W (new)

Jennifer W | 1823 comments I've been wanting to read The Map of Salt and Stars for a while.

I recently read Stay Gold. It was a good YA book.

message 4: by Marianne (new)

Marianne | 64 comments Mad Honey would work for this prompt

message 5: by Doni (new)

Doni | 697 comments Hmmm... didn't notice right away that this specifies fiction. I would prefer it to be broader.

message 6: by Taylor (new)

Taylor Dowlin | 1 comments A favorite I read a few years ago is Continental Divide by Alex Myers. A fiction by a trans man about a trans man!

message 7: by Haley (new)

Haley (itsmehales) | 3 comments Casey McQuiston (author of Red, White & Royal Blue) has a new book coming out next year called The Pairing that sounds so good!! Casey is nonbinary. Would totally recommend any of their 3 already published books too.

Also in the romance vein are Meryl Wilsner, whose new book Cleat Cute could count for the female athlete one too, and Anita Kelly - they're both nonbinary.

For something non-romance, I'd recommend Rivers Solomon, who's also nonbinary. I read The Deep, a sci-fi/mythology novella that was incredibly powerful. Also Patricia Wants to Cuddle, a wacky, creepy horror written by Samantha Allen, a trans woman, that I truly cannot describe. Such a unique read.

message 8: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 1756 comments I am slightly miffed that the next book in the HMRC series is a prequel, rather than what happens next, but I'll be reading it anyway, so Queen B is my most likely choice.

Ron | 2708 comments Huh, I was originally going to skip this one, but then I realized that I had a copy of Pageboy so this is perfect.

Whoops, it says fiction.

Okay that might be a bit harder.

Carly Friedman (carlykayreads) | 61 comments Ron wrote: "Huh, I was originally going to skip this one, but then I realized that I had a copy of Pageboy so this is perfect.

Remember that no memoir is straight fact. I loved Pageboy and highly recommend it, but I'm sure there is some "fiction" mixed in. I would count it! If you want a short fiction book, I can maybe give some suggestions...

message 11: by Ron (new)

Ron | 2708 comments Sure, Carly, that would be great. Thank you.

message 12: by Denise (new)

Denise | 374 comments I'll read I Kissed Shara Wheeler

For something that is not YA and is amazing, there's Little Fish.

message 13: by Erin (new)

Erin (erin_leslie) | 33 comments Any Katherine Locke novel would work here. I absolutely loved This Rebel Heart and honestly might just reread it for this prompt.

message 14: by Amy (new)

Amy (amymarkscouk) | 40 comments Ron wrote: "Huh, I was originally going to skip this one, but then I realized that I had a copy of Pageboy so this is perfect."

You could use Pageboy instead for 41. A memoir that explores queerness!

Ron | 2708 comments Amy wrote: You could use Pageboy instead for 41. A memoir that explores queerness!

Of course. I was too blind to that so I didn't even think of it. Thank you.

message 16: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer T. (jent998) | 231 comments Highly recommend Sarah Gailey.

Carly Friedman (carlykayreads) | 61 comments Jennifer wrote: "Highly recommend Sarah Gailey."

I loved River of Teeth! Didn't realize they also wrote Just Like Home and Upright Women Wanted. Will add those to my TBR :)

message 18: by K.L. (last edited Dec 04, 2023 06:27AM) (new)

K.L. Middleton (theunapologeticbookworm) | 847 comments Cory McCarthy is a nonbinary trans author. I really liked Once & Future and its sequel (Sword in the Stars), which they wrote with their spouse, A.R. Capetta.

The Pampered Librarian | 165 comments I just got excited about this prompt all of a sudden as I remembered that two years ago for the year of the tiger I read Tiger Honor by Yoon Ha Lee, who is a trans person, and liked the novel, so now I can read the last book in the trilogy Fox Snare, which will satisfy this prompt. It is J Fiction, but I don't mind.

Joanna G (joanna_g) | 358 comments Laura wrote: "I just got excited about this prompt all of a sudden as I remembered that two years ago for the year of the tiger I read Tiger Honor by Yoon Ha Lee, who is a trans person, and liked..."

For Yoon Ha Lee, I also highly recommend the Machineries of Empire series, starting with Ninefox Gambit. I will say it seems highly mathy - the magic [?] system is all based on calendaring, numbers and physics. I found that hard to get into it, until I accepted that I just wasn't going to understand how it worked, and handwaved it off. But the core story - a soldier in a desperate action sharing her body and mind with a prior general renowned for their brilliance until they went mad and killed soldiers under their command - is freaking fantastic!

I'd also recommend The Midnight Bargain, by C.L. Polk, who is non-binary. They have other great works as well, but that's a favorite.

message 21: by Ashley Marie (last edited Dec 07, 2023 11:42AM) (new)

Ashley Marie | 1028 comments Here to shriek about my favorite author who also happens to be trans, Craig Schaefer - Heather is a prolific indie author so I only added the first books of series (serieses?) to the Listopia. I believe much of her work is available for f-r-e-e on Kindle Unlimited!

As a trans person, I'd really appreciate if we don't use trans people's memoirs as "fiction" for a stretch on the prompt. I know you don't mean harm by it, but our experiences are often seen as "fake" by transphobes and so saying our stories on our experiences could be used as fiction can perpetuate harm.

message 23: by Ron (new)

Ron | 2708 comments Sorry, didn't mean anything by it. I guess what I implied got lost in translation. I was going to use 'Pageboy,' but I did not read the whole prompt in it's entirety so I didn't know it was talking about fiction.

Oh no you're fine! I was replying to Carly's reply to you where she said to count it. I'm just incredibly bad at the Goodreads reply function. I'm also sure Carly didn't mean any harm.

message 25: by Elspeth (new)

Elspeth (elspethm) | 29 comments I loved Birthday. it's about 2 boys who are born on the same day and one transitions. Such a good book.

Russo's If I Was Your Girl was good, but Birthday was excellent.

message 26: by Julie (new)

Julie | 7 comments I recommend Leech by Hiron Ennes if you like gothic horror.

message 27: by Dani (new)

Dani Pergola | 9 comments Highly recommend Detransition, Baby. I also enjoyed The Call-Out (tw sexual assault). Both are about trans women by trans women. One of my all-time favorite books is The Atmospherians, and the author is nonbinary, but none of the characters are

message 28: by Cat (new)

Cat Clerky | 1 comments I highly recommend “Light from Uncommon Stars” if anyone is looking for something to fill this prompt! (It’s also a great option for the cozy fantasy prompt, the LGBT romance prompt, the 3 POV prompt, or the magical realism prompt, which gives you a sense of the book).

☘Misericordia☘ ⚡ϟ⚡⛈⚡☁ ❇️❤❣ (misericordia) | 36 comments She Who Became the Sun (The Radiant Emperor, #1) by Shelley Parker-Chan She Who Became the Sun (nonbinary author Shelley Parker-Chan)

Every Heart a Doorway (Wayward Children, #1) by Seanan McGuire Every Heart a Doorway (Seanan McGuire as a 'pansexual, bisexual and demisexual' author probably counts?)

message 30: by Catherine (new)

Catherine Hughes (chughes2025) | 3 comments Does anyone who know if any books by Delemhach would count? The goodreads author description uses they/them pronouns, but I can't find much else.

Sexuality and gender are different, so Seanan McGuire would not count for this prompt. She is a cis female.

message 32: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 3 comments The Affair Plays by Hayley St. James - nonbinary author, also a first time author! Description of both plays here:

A forever favorite would be Nimona by ND Stevenson

Big agree. I read this one in the last few years and it was fantastic.

message 35: by Lilith (new)

Lilith (lilithp) | 1073 comments I didn't see this listed, and it's marketed as fiction, and sometimes as autobiographical fiction. Anyways, I'm late to the party, reading Freshwater by Akwaeke Emezi and I'm loving it.

message 36: by Cathern (new)

Cathern (cat4280) | 27 comments I'm planning to read Eternally Yours, and I'm not sure if this book can count for this category since only one of the authors in the anthology is nonbinary.

message 37: by Trish (last edited Apr 09, 2024 11:32PM) (new)

Trish (trishhartuk) | 265 comments I think I'll use Promises Stronger Than Darkness by Charlie Jane Anders for this one. Part three of a really good YA Space Opera trilogy.

I'd recommend the series to anyone who likes decent YA SF. The first two are:
Victories Greater Than Death and
Dreams Bigger Than Heartbreak

Joanna wrote: "For Yoon Ha Lee, I also highly recommend the Machineries of Empire series, starting with Ninefox Gambit. I had the same problem with the first book in the trilogy, but for the other two, I just went with it. Fox Snare is on my list, too, having really enjoyed both Dragon Pearl and Tiger Honor.

Cleat Cute by Meryl Wilsner
Cleat Cute

message 42: by Anshita (new)

Anshita (_book_freak) | 267 comments I am reading Nimona by N.D. Stevenson. I saw the movie a while back and wanted to read the graphic novel too, so this is the prompt to do it. Stevenson is non-binary and transmasculine.

message 43: by LeahS (last edited Jul 01, 2024 08:57AM) (new)

LeahS | 491 comments I read George ( now Melissa but I read an old ebook from the library), by Alex Gino.

I thought it explained the feelings of a trans child very well, in an accessible way for its target audience, with the well-used but never failing trope of wanting a particular part in a school play.

message 44: by Denise (new)

Denise | 343 comments I read a short story collection, Lesser Known Monsters of the 21st Century, by Kim Fu who identifies as non-binary

message 45: by Laura Ruth (new)

Laura Ruth Loomis | 235 comments I love everything by nonbinary author Casey McQuiston, so I read their latest, The Pairing. It's even hornier, and boozier, than Red, White & Royal Blue.

Michele Olson | 116 comments Ghosts of Gotham by Craig Schaefer. It was a little long, and I probably won't read the sequel.
