Please also clarify the second part of Kristie's query -
- can I be reading for multiple hikes at a time, just as long as the books within each hike are read in order?
It would be a great help for me. Thanks.
Thank you, Janice for the amazing challenge, which actually looked easier at first glance until I had searched 'home' in my TBR and came up with 10 books that looked sooo good. Some of them 700+ pages. Now I am down that rabbithole. I might never move past 'Start.I am much better at actual hiking, lol

Please quote Kristie's question, because I thought I had answered them all. Your question seems to be a different question altogether.
Awesome - Almeta! I will try your “one click” option.Kristie - I never had much luck with the copy and paste option for the book cover link. That is why I always saved the .jpg file.

I didn't really understand the answer either.
For the later badges, can we work on the three hikes simultaneously or do we complete 1 hike then pick the next hike to start?
I'm sorry, I know you have answered this before in old challenges. But as I have only really gotten into audiobooks properly, wanted to check.Reading the books in order, completely get.
How does that work for those of us who are reading multiple books at once? In any medium.
Do we just have to start them in order?
So say I pick up book 4 as a hardcopy, I cannot start book 5 as an audio until I start reading that physical book 4?
And then I can't start book 6 until I have finished both of those books? No matter the medium
Or something else?
Interesting question, Rus. I always read multiple books at once and I just go by the date I finish them. I don't know that I've ever considered when I start the books. I report them as I finish them, so somehow it just translated to me that the order I read them in was the order I finish them in.
I think the original question that still has some confusion around it was from Jenn:"- can I be reading for multiple hikes at a time, just as long as the books within each hike are read in order?"
I believe the response from Janice was:
"After much soul searching (ha), I still think badges need to be read in order as well."
If I'm reading it right, I think the confusion is just based on different word choice. I'm thinking each badge needs to be read in order would mean that you can not complete hikes concurrently.
Janice, my apologies if I've misinterpreted this. I'm certainly not trying to confuse the situation more.
I was starting to get a bit confused with all the variations of questions around this issue. I can see the validity of reading hikes within a badge concurrently. I don't want to make the challenge extremely difficult. So here's my final ruling:
1) Badges must be read in order as is the tradition.
2) Books within hikes must be read in order (new regulation).
3) Hikes may be read concurrently as long as you maintain rules 1 & 2.
Rusalka, this should somewhat answer your question. I usually have one ebook and one audiobook going as well, so this ruling suits me as well.
Viji, this should also answer your question.
Jenn, I'm not sure if this is what you were looking for or not. Hopefully, it's all straightened now for everyone.
That is exactly what I was wondering, thank you Janice 😁 And, my apologies, I really wasn’t trying to start anything 🤦♀️
I have a question about this rule"*NEW*Print editions must be at least 175 pages. If reading an ebook, the ebook book must be at least 250 pages. If reading an audiobook, the audiobook must be a minimum of 6 hours long."
So do we not have to link back to a page count as long as the audio is at least 6 hours? Because I have occasionally had a book that missed the page count but was 6 hours.
No, you don't need to link back. I would hope that people would use their own judgement as to whether or not a book would fit, keeping in mind the spirit of the challenge.

My apologies. I mixed up Kristie's and Jenn's queries. I find that they have been clarified.
Janice, you legend!!! I've just found the Inspired by Literature hike based on "The realm of the Elderlings", the best fantasy series I every had the pleasure to read with so many members of this group (including yourself!). Happy days 😊
Checkpoint 1 - BreeTask - Read a book that is the 1st book of a series of 4
The Housekeeper series has 4 primary works as per GR Link:
https://www.goodreads.com/series/3439...
The 4th book in this series was published on 11/11/2023. Would the first book in the series A House for Keeping qualify for this task? Thanks.

Yes, that works, that is the task. Half books in the series (.5) don't count.
We look at the term "primary works" at the top of the page to help determine how many books are in a series.
I deleted my question, since it was answered at the bottom of the thread. I need to learn to read EVERYthing before I ask ANYthing.
Working on that in 2024, but it's 2023 still, so I'm claiming immunity.

lol We are all guilty of that from time to time! Glad you found your answer.

I want to read
Mrs Harris Goes to Paris & Mrs Harris Goes to New York for one of my additional books for a task. This book is two volumes together and the page count is 320 pages. Is it allowed to read books like this? Thanks.
Since it's included in one volume, it is considered an anthology. You will need to read the entire book to qualify. You can't just read one of the stories and call it done.
Janice wrote: "Since it's included in one volume, it is considered an anthology. You will need to read the entire book to qualify. "Anthology" is a recognized genre and the rules state that any genre is allowed with some exceptions. It's not listed as an exception.

Sharon wrote: "Would it be possible to get a model of how you would like the tasks reported? Thanks!"I'll include something when I post the request badge thread. I still have to finalize that.
As for your personal threads, I would report as we have in the past, with the added requirement of indicating how the books are linked.
So I know that if the book is audio we don't have to link to a print copy anymore as long as the book is 6+ hours but what about like the Mount Doom task where the book has to be between 400-500 pages? Do we just use the top print edition to determine page count like we used to?
I am wondering if Before the Coffee Gets Cold will qualify for the 1st of a series of 4. The original series in Japanese is 5 books, but there are only 4 published in English.
Katrisa wrote: "So I know that if the book is audio we don't have to link to a print copy anymore as long as the book is 6+ hours but what about like the Mount Doom task where the book has to be between 400-500 pa..."In that case, you will need to refer to a print edition.
Kirila wrote: "I am wondering if Before the Coffee Gets Cold will qualify for the 1st of a series of 4. Sorry.
CP 3, Chasing Dracula requires a book with a meal of the cover. Is anyone having trouble finding a book for this task?
Janice wrote: "CP 3, Chasing Dracula requires a book with a meal of the cover. Is anyone having trouble finding a book for this task?"I am so far. I am about to declare that a cake is an acceptable meal. :)
But the year is young....
My Paris Kitchen: Recipes and Stories: A CookbookGarlic and Sapphires: The Secret Life of a Critic in Disguise
I'm going to make an official change here. CP 3 in Chasing Dracula task change: A Savory Food must be on the cover. It may not be "on the hoof", so a cute goose or calf on the cover is not going to cut it.
Janice wrote: "CP 3, Chasing Dracula requires a book with a meal of the cover. Is anyone having trouble finding a book for this task?"First thing that came to mind for me is Murder and Marinara
. I think cozies may be the way to go for that task.
I was thinking that too, Kristie, but all I was finding were recipe books. Hopefully the change will make it a little easier.
Janice wrote: "CP 3, Chasing Dracula requires a book with a meal of the cover. Is anyone having trouble finding a book for this task?"I would love to have some help here. I found these in my Kindle books but not sure if any of this would be acceptable:
1.
2.
3.
4.
Would covers with cake, pie or similar/other food items on cover work for this task?
Thanks.
Viji, see message 95. Your food items need to be savory, not sweet. And as in all cover tasks, you need to have the item large and the focus of the cover. It shouldn't be lost with everything else on the cover. As I addressed in the rules, I will not be making a ruling on a selection of books. .
Ask yourself - is the food item savory? is it large or prominent on the cover? Also ask yourself if you are going to complete the entire challenge. If you think you could conceivably do 3 badges, then leave this to the side to revisit later in the year. In the meantime, keep watching the Kindle daily deals and something might pop up.
