I read the book as a teenager & forgot to write down the name.

It is about dogs who have forgotten their roots & so their magic & must go on a type of journey, I think, to learn to howl again, to find their magic & be the rightful protectors.

I think it was a medieval setting, I can't remember much more, but it was quite captivating to me & I think there were more books.
