Can you access it now? It might be easier to go to 'polls' at the top right if the groups homepage.

Is anyone else unable to use it?

message 52: by Diana (new)

Diana | 23 comments Thanks, Tania. I can access it on my laptop but not my Ipad. No idea why!!

There is a Kindle version of the Joan Coggin book, and I’ve been looking for an excuse to buy it.

I’m going to try Miss Marjoribanks as it’s my first time reading the author, readily available and her highest rated book. I’ll lurk in the January discussion on the other two, if that’s ok.

Thanks Marilyn. You have some of my favourites there, but I haven't read Anderby Wold. They'd all make for good discussions I think. Especially the first two.

message 61: by Lynnie (new)

Lynnie | 68 comments I have Anderby Wold on my tbr too. I want to read more Winifred Holtby, have just bought a biography about her and her memoir of Virginia Woolf.

Excellent. If it's anything like South Riding there will be plenty to discuss.

BTW, Mrs. Palfrey at the Claremont is only 99p on Kindle in the UK at the moment, I think it was mentioned further up-thread, so it might be worth snapping up if anyone would like a read of that one.

Looking back, there is some interest in The Edwardians, Loving And Giving, Anderby Wold and Dont Tell Alfred
And then more generally Angela Thirkell, Barbara Pym, Elizabeth Taylor and some Furrowed Middlebrow titles. The FM titles mentioned so far are The Lark, and A Harp in Lowndes Square so I will slot these two in as secondary lighter reads.

I'll check back through to see what I've missed.

I will join in in February, March May and June. I saw some interest in Miss Read and Angela Thirkell. I would be interested in reading the Thrush Green books and the High Rising books if the group chooses a book to start on in each series.

Tania | 2694 comments Mod
That's great! And really nice to hear from you; hope you're keeping well.

Angela Thirkell was mentioned a few times. I think Susan's next was Cheerfulness Breaks In, so that could be a summer read, maybe July? Thrush Green books would also be nice as a lighter read, and it doesn't seem to matter which order they are read in. Does anyone have any preference?

message 67: by Susan in NC (new)

Susan in NC (susanncreader) | 461 comments Actually, I just read Cheerfulness Breaks In last March, so my next would be Northbridge Rectory, but if the group wants to read Cheerfulness Breaks In and it’s available for members, go for it! Thirkell is a delight, I think many would appreciate her books!

I’d be happy to read Northbridge Rectory if that suits people.

I will start reading the High Rising and Thrush Green books in order and just let me know which books others want to read.

Is anyone interested in reading Vera by Elizabeth Von Arnim?

message 71: by Susan in NC (new)

Susan in NC (susanncreader) | 461 comments I would read it, I can get it through Everand subscription through March.

message 72: by Susan in NC (new)

Susan in NC (susanncreader) | 461 comments And have we chosen a Daphne du Maurier to read first, I think in February?

Yes, The King's General in Feb.

I loved Vera, apparently one of du Mauriers inspirations for Rebecca. I'll try to fit in a reread when you read it. When were you thinking Tracey? March sounds good.

Thank you, sorry I must have missed this - and March/April does sound good for “Vera”, if it works for others.

Tracey wrote: "I will start reading the High Rising and Thrush Green books in order and just let me know which books others want to read."

Would people be interested in the Thrush Green series in order? Maybe every other month starting May?

Ohhh, same here on Vera, whenever it works for others.

message 78: by Susan in NC (new)

Susan in NC (susanncreader) | 461 comments Which is first? I looked on Amazon, they’ve got “village school” and call it Fairacres #1, then on GR it’s Thrush Green, so not sure of series name and order - and availability an issue for me. But once I know the name of the series and order, I can see if I can join in.

Susan in NC (susanncreader) | 461 comments Oh, wow, it’s a miracle, my library actually has the ebook of “Thrush Green” by Miss Read, so if that’s first, I’m in!

I was wondering whether anyone else is planning on pre-ordering MISS GRANBY'S SECRET or The Bastard of Pinsk. when Furrowed Middlebrow release it? (August 5th), and if so would there be interest in reading it in August?

message 86: by Susan in NC (new)

Susan in NC (susanncreader) | 461 comments Sorry, checked Amazon here, I don’t see it, maybe it will become available later. The original above is $199 USD!

message 87: by Tania, Gloucestershire Wild Daffodil. (new)

Tania | 2694 comments Mod
Gosh, that's a punchy price. I have found a paperback listing, though it's not complete yet. I'm assuming there will be a kindle edition available.

message 88: by Tania, Gloucestershire Wild Daffodil. (new)

Tania | 2694 comments Mod
Miss Granby's Secret: or The Bastard of Pinsk now has a Kindle edition available. I have just pre-ordered a copy for 49p, a considerably better price.

message 89: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Brantly | 83 comments wow - 49p sounds like a lot less than $4.99! (obv. less than $199)

I also had an offer to pre-order a paperback copy - which I did - but that offer seems to be gone now. I struggle with reading on the Kindle, but know other folks really use it.

message 90: by Tania, Gloucestershire Wild Daffodil. (new)

Tania | 2694 comments Mod
That's odd, I thought the US price would be similar. I just checked and it's still 49p in the UK, but might be worth buying at that price quickly, it's unlikely to come down further, and may go up.

Thanks for this Tania. I've just pre-ordered the Kindle book, wow, 49p is a steal!! I'll likely buy the paperback later.

Thanks Susan. In my local town the majority of boards displayed are for the Green Party by a country mile, followed by Lib Dems, so it will be interesting to see how much Labour will win by. With all that said, I'm in North Cotswolds and the Tories will get in here.

message 96: by Susan in NC (new)

Susan in NC (susanncreader) | 461 comments I’ve been reading that the Tories are in for a sound beating after 14 years in charge, so will be interested to see who voters choose.

Shall I put Miss Granby's Secret: or The Bastard of Pinsk down for an August read? It is available from the 5th.

Also, looking back there was some interest in reading The Feast by Margaret Kennedy, that would make a great August read, set in Cornwall in the Summer.
