Ru Lopez | 2 comments I read this book around 2014-2017 but it might have been published in the early 2000's. I recall the cover having a green ring with a ginger haired girl's face in it but I could be remembering that wrong. The plot is of two kingdoms who hate each other but are not yet at war. At some point they exchange princes as hostages to prevent war but one side claims the other killed/harmed their prince and start getting ready to fight. The girl was a normal village girl(?) who was friends with the prince and when he is taken hostage she follows after him and sneaks into the enemy kingdom. She helps in the enemy castle's kitchens and over hears some local ladies talking about how barbaric about her kingdom is but she can't correct them or else they will wonder about how she knows that since people don't cross the border. At some point she dresses as a soldier and rides a horse down the battlefield waving a white flag and both armies drop their weapons. This was because of a legend/prophecy that a soldier with a halo of fire and a white flag will bring peace to the land. Near the end of the book the prince or a male character finds her in a small hut injured. A side plot that is going on at the same time is a girl who has a ring that can see where girl #1 is at. I don't recall much of that side plot but I do know that she has a mom and maybe a sister where they lost all their family jewels to a maid that they trusted. Girl #2 saved the ring that she has because she sewed it to the bottom of her dress so it wouldn't get taken. I think at some point her family realizes that she has the ring and say something along the lines of "if she couldn't sell the ring when her family was starving" something something. The setting was medieval europe inspired and a bit of magic with the ring but no wizards or such as far as I can recall. Any help would be appreciated!
