Want to know if its Nora Roberts who wrote this in a book

Years ago I read a book, may have been second in a series or I got the authors mixed up because the plot/characters were similar, and I cannot remember who the author was or what book it was it might be The Search by Nora Roberts or its sequel if it has one or the book that came before I dunno but in this book the main character discovers a murdered cat all bloodied and stuffed in a desk drawer and the murderer listens to her report about it over the phone and the murderer thinks about how he killed his teacher's dog when he was a kid just to watch her cry.
I want to avoid this author whoever it is. Anyone know? Thank You.

I’ve read a lot of Nora and this is not her style.

I can't remember the book or the author I am trying to figure out who it was. Storm Reads on youtube is doing this readathon called Nora November and I have some paranormal books of hers that look interesting from a book sale at the library. I don't want to read or support the author if it is the same one that wrote that book.

Wish I could remember the title of it. We had the book The Search because mom read some Nora Roberts but she is in a nursing home and this was several years ago so if she read the book I don't think she'd remember if I asked her.

I was thinking of reading this Odwyer trilogy for Nora November if she wasn't the author I swore to avoid.
