FG | 56 comments I used to always force myself to slog through it to the bitter end but not anymore. Now that I'm older, my time is more precious and I don't want to waste it. I might skim and go to the end though to check out the ending.

Cel | 26 comments sometimes it's just depends sometimes I'm just curious and want to finish see what happens and then if it's really bad then I will definitely

Alicia Meyer | 3 comments If it’s a paperback I’ll finish it. If it’s an ebook most often I’ll abandon it and may or may not rate it as to why I left it. Occasionally I’ll finish it if it isn’t too bad. I just don’t want to waste my time with a book that I don’t like.

Petra Jayne Green (midknightrose) | 14 comments I am a persistent reader, and I will read a book until I reach the end no matter how much I hate it or no matter how boring it is.

message 55: by Sandy (new)

Sandy | 8 comments I always finish- I’m always thinking maybe it will get better

message 56: by Gabriela (new)

Gabriela (gabrielastbr) I find it very easy to abandon nonfiction books, but with fiction I try to finish them. Mostly because I have experienced fiction books being slow at first and then get better. I'm always curious!

message 57: by Marti (new)

Marti If I have it physically or as an audiobook, I make an effort to finish it (if I'm curious to know how it goes). If I have it in PDF EBOOK or that way... no, I'll leave it.

message 58: by Larissa (new)

Larissa | 41 comments if I can't finish a book, I won't mark it as read and try to finish it later (maybe read a different book in between). but I only read books I physically own, so I feel like I owe it to myself to finish the book

message 59: by Steve (new)

Steve Rufle | 6 comments Stop it and mark, DNF in Goodreads. I have way too many on my TBR list.

message 60: by Dijanay (new)

Dijanay | 2 comments I cannot abandon a book completely, I will stop reading it for a while but will eventually (after many tries) finish it.

message 61: by A3therOracle (new)

A3therOracle | 15 comments I always finish it to see what the hype was about

message 62: by Robin Hood (new)

Robin Hood | 26 comments Depends how far along I am, in the beginning I'd quit but if its later I keep reading. It also depends on what kind of book. For example, if it's a schoolbook I sadly continue reading..

message 63: by doowopapocalypse (new)

doowopapocalypse (tomwink) Life is too short to read bad books.

message 64: by Pisces51 (new)

Pisces51 I think it is wrong to continue to read a book just because you are curious about the ending. No reason to stay.
You posed a good question though. I used to think I should suffer through whole novel to allott a one star rating. Then I decided if a book was bad enough I was going to leave 1 star and then kick it into the DNF pile. The most recent nutty idea I had was that I should give a book a chance and read to 25% before I hurled it to the DNR shelf. BTW did anyone ever think about DNR also being an anacronym for Do Not Resuscitate???
Anyway one day a reader discussed her 50-page-rule. That answer is perfect. I have followed it in most every case.Reader above so right in life is too short to read bad books. That includes my own attempts in the past to perform CPR on a bad one.

message 65: by kitcantspell (new)

kitcantspell ( semi hiatus ) | 20 comments ill usually read up to 100 pages, and if the book is super bad, i dnf it :) gotta give it a chance atleast

message 66: by Roksana (new)

Roksana | 4 comments I usually stop reading.

message 67: by Kelli (new)

Kelli (klc1097) | 2 comments I always felt bad abandoning a book but I have so many TBR and my best friend said to me that life is too short to read a book that I'm not liking/can't get in to. If I'm in a book club though, I tend to finish the book even if I'm not liking it because I feel obligated because I'm in that club. Sometimes I'm pleasantly surprised and love the book though! I've only had about four, honestly, in my lifetime that I just DNF.

Liz_is_still_reading | 3 comments I usually read for about fifty more pages, and if I still hate it I google the ending.

message 69: by Earl KC (new)

Earl KC | 13 comments Stop reading. It’s suppose to be fun. Have fun.

message 70: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth Sullivan | 4 comments A thrift store has .05$sales om books every Monday. I buy somewhere between $5 to $20 worth of books per month at that price. I begin to read them, and then either keep reading or donate them back.

it's hard to abandon a book. There's this feeling like I might accidentally throw out a treasure, but I don't want bad books to keep me from good ones.

message 71: by Crimson (new)

Crimson (prettycrimsonbutterfly) There are a few books that I have not finished, and I don't feel bad about it. Everything doesn't deserve your time. Your time is precious, and once it's gone, you can never get it back. Why waste it with something that doesn't give or serve a purpose?

message 72: by Anjalijpk (new)

Anjalijpk | 59 comments I came across the same situation many times but I am always curious about the endings. So eventhough it may or may not be boring, I complete it.

SADIE (AGATHA'S VERSION) Life is short so I'm not going to waste my time reading a terrible book. If it can't catch my attention in the first few chapters it goes into the DNF pile. I would rather spend my time reading books I enjoy.

message 74: by RAVEN (new)

RAVEN | 8 comments it's rare I cannot finish a book. If I cannot finish I will pick it up sometime later in the future and give it another shot.

message 75: by Loves2 (new)

Loves2 Read If it's an audiobook (and I am more than 40% done) I try to finish it, but if I am reading it and it's less than halfway done. I am probably ditching :(

message 76: by Sara (new)

Sara | 9 comments I always try to finish the book, but I will skip paragraphs or pages of the unimportant stuff in order to finish it faster. I feel like I can't properly judge whether or not I liked a book until I finish it.

message 77: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 5 comments I used to commit to finishing every book I started. But now, I’ve decided life’s too short to waste time on reading anything I’m not enjoying so I DNF.

message 78: by Shane (new)

Shane | 5 comments I put it down, life's too short to read bad books

message 79: by Carmen (new)

Carmen | 12 comments If am not getting into the book, i just stop and read another one. maybe one day i will pick him up again

message 80: by evie *s-ia* (new)

evie *s-ia* | 45 comments continue if its on my tbr

if not i dnf
or if im reading two other books, and ones boring, im prob gonna dnf the boring book

message 81: by Anita (new)

Anita Hickman (anitahickman8) | 35 comments I might not finish it at the moment but I will come back to it later with eyes..if I still don't like it. it is what it is
but just I don't doesn't mean everyone will. my review will be tasteful and not hurtful

message 82: by Neil (new)

Neil (nabq) | 31 comments If I am unable to finish a book then it has to be really awful.

Saying that I will always give a book a second attempt.

message 83: by Francisco (new)

Francisco Martinez | 21 comments When I have had to read a book, and halfway through the book, I already start to dislike it...let's say that I continue reading out of curiosity, to see how it ends.

message 84: by Jim (last edited Nov 03, 2023 10:08AM) (new)

Jim Vuksic If I am introduced to a book I don't like, I discard it after a very brief acquaintance with its content. The same with people.

message 85: by Yackie (new)

Yackie | 2 comments I think it depends on the shade of dislike. Is it just not your kind of book? Is it boring? For me the worst kind of book is a mediocre book. Not bad enough to be good nor good enough to be entertaining. Depending on the offense it causes me to fall through will usually tip my DNF scale. I DNFd The Nanny by Lana Ferguson at 79% because the graphic sex was overwhelmingly boring and the plot couldn’t support my decision to keep reading it. Also the book was really icky and gave me bad bad vibes. Usually I’ll DNF in the last 20% because if I don’t care by then someone made a mistake somewhere.

message 86: by Tex (new)

Tex | 3 comments Once I start I can’t not finish. After slow starts some got better and some didn’t.

Effectively for me there are two types of books that are “un-put-downable”; those that you just want to keep reading to find out what happens next; and those you just want to keep reading so you can finish it and move on to the next book as fast as you can.

I will admit though there has been only one book in my life that I just could not get through and stopped reading about a quarter the way through. The other 99.9% of books I’ve read I’ve finished.

message 87: by Amarys (new)

Amarys Castillo (amaryscastillo) | 1 comments I watch a ton of tiktoks about the book and see if it has interesting quotes, characters, or like a plot twist then I decide from there but if I'm really bored out of my mind then I won't lmao

message 88: by Liberty (new)

Liberty One of the great things about having a Library Card is that you are free to abandon books you aren't enjoying and just pick up another one. And every trip to the Library supports this vital public service

message 89: by Nelly (new)

Nelly | 5 comments i will continue reading but it will take me a long time to read the book whenever i put it down to do something else

message 90: by Nat (new)

Nat (natashadoesread) | 1 comments If it's part of a series I have already started, I'll finish it and hope the next book is better. If it's a standalone or start of a series, I either DNF and move on or DNF but look up a synopsis so I can at least know how it ends.

Orinoco Womble (tidy bag and all) At my age life is too short to read books I don't like, but sometimes I trudge through especially if I've DNFed two or three before reading that one. Sometimes I wonder if I'm just getting picky. (Like that's a bad thing?)

There are also the books you keep reading, hoping the author will actually get somewhere. And so often they don't...

message 93: by Natasha (new)

Natasha | 136 comments Normally, I'll finish it if I can. If it's a really hard read, I'd start another book alongside it and dip in and out of the one I was struggling with. Sometimes, I'd leave it for a while and come back to it. Read some other books in the meantime.

Orinoco Womble (tidy bag and all) Salma wrote: "I've been diagnosed with ocd a little while ago so even if I really despise a book, it just feels like my brain doesn't allow me to stop reading it"

The first time I DNF'd a book I was about 12 and it almost killed me. It was The Green Ginger Jar: A Chinatown Mystery and even at 12 I found it very bad, but the fact that I didn't finish it haunted me for far too many years...not enough to go back to the library and borrow it again, though!

myfriendscallmeAng | 6 comments I was reading The Sun Is Also A Star by Nicole Yoon and I hated it. It’s still on my shelf un complete. I might read it when I have no more books left to read.

message 96: by Schvenn (new)

Schvenn | 18 comments I "hate read it" because I'm too OCD to leave it alone.

message 97: by Alma (new)

Alma Crawford (1730661128) | 22 comments I find that many of the books I wouldn't read on my own. The meetings are enjoyable, and the girls are great. So far this year I've found myself slogging through large books I fall asleep reading. This month we are reading a WW2 novel and I just can't find pleasure in reading about war right now.

On a lighter note, I've been reading some of my Nora Roberts trilogies to make room in my bookcase. I've been suffering from a health flare that's taken me off my feet for a while and I find her writing soothing.

message 98: by Trish (new)

Trish (trishmc) | 1 comments I will maybe skim read until the last two chapters and read them so I know how the book ends.
