Kayla Emma Robins (kaylarobins) | 63 comments I'm dying of curiosity. It's just that I skip the longer and more boring paragraphs.

Rissa (rissasreading) (rissasreading) | 177 comments I finish it but I speed read the book if I'm not enjoying it

Kayla Emma Robins (kaylarobins) | 63 comments Thank you very much Rissa for the advice!

message 4: by JessMcQ (new)

JessMcQ | 2 comments I'll finish it, but by speed reading through any painful parts

message 5: by ☆Shira☆ (new)

☆Shira☆ | 59 comments It depends on what stage I start to give up. If from the beginning I see that it doesn't interest me, I'll stop, but if I've already passed the halfway point, I'll probably finish.

Louisa Snell | 10 comments DITCH

message 7: by Fatman (new)

Fatman | 4 comments I very rarely leave books unfinished. So I'll slog through even if I'm not into it.

message 8: by Kat (new)

Kat Rose | 1 comments It depends on how bad it is lol

LilMisGrayBrisk | 551 comments It depends on my level of boredom and disinterest in the characters/story. I have dnf’d plenty of books but also finished books I didn’t like.

message 10: by Benjamin (new)

Benjamin Kahn | 2 comments I used to soldier through, but now I abandon it. I feel that life is too short and there are too many books to be read to waste time on one I don't like. If I've finished a significant amount when I realize that I don't want to continue - like over half - I will often finish it just so that the time I've already invested wasn't wasted.

Warren Greer | 17 comments I always finish a book, no matter how boring it might be, not out of curiosity, but because an unfinished book is like an itching wound for me. Sometimes I have to shove and grunt, but I always make it to the end.
That's why I have to be extra picky about the stuff I read. Once it's started, it's like I have no right to put it down.

message 12: by Hally (new)

Hally | 23 comments tossed the book and forget it

message 13: by Diana (new)

Diana | 6 comments If I fall asleep or my mind wonders, I let it go. If I am still awake yet confused, I keep going.

message 14: by Giulia (new)

Giulia (lietodeath) | 1 comments Personally, reading is an hobby and so it's supposed to be fun. If I'm reading something that I'm not enjoying it means and I'm just wasting my time and I'll immediately give up

message 15: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Goss (goodreadscomrebecca_goss) | 3 comments I usually finish it but I've been known to skip over parts and look for something that might catch my interest and draw me back in.

High Lady Of The Night Court | 11 comments I will finish it out of curiosity, but I’ll just skim over some stuff instead of full on diving into the story

message 17: by Fanny (new)

Fanny Diaz-Gutierrez | 8 comments if its painfully bad, then I have to ditch it. lol

message 18: by Anett.A.T^.^ (new)

Anett.A.T^.^ | 13 comments I don't force myself, I usually just put it down, read something different and pick it up sometime later. >< I repeat that strategy if it's necessary until it's done, I don't like leaving a book unread if I once started. ><

message 19: by Jacqueline (new)

Jacqueline (applejacksbooks) Depends on if it's readable or not. If I'm really not having a good time then no I'll DNF.

message 20: by CristinaDraws (new)

CristinaDraws | 2 comments I try. I really try to not drop a book. but mindless reading is not in my nature so I read as far as I can go to know if it'll turn at some point. if it doesn't get better after a couple chapters I'll def drop it. not worth the effort.

message 21: by TimeFliesAway (last edited Oct 27, 2023 12:49PM) (new)

TimeFliesAway | 121 comments Hugely depends on the story and length.

I do prefer to give the book a chance and read through the end, but if there's literally nothing keeping me, not even the writing style, I'll just drop it.

I am a mood reader though, so sometimes, even when I like most of the book but am not in the mood for it atm, I'll put it aside and read sth else.
Sometimes that "putting aside" may result in the book being forgotten and put back on my TBR, oops.
Other times the "putting aside" is an excuse bc I don't wanna say "dnf" or "dropped", lol. And then forget about it until like years later.

I don't force myself though, unless it's a really short book (50-ish pages) or a Manga/Comic volume.

message 22: by Gary (new)

Gary Allen, PhD (gallen6) | 21 comments Ditch and rate accordingly

☠︎︎ A.K. ☠︎︎ (literarygoblin) Really just depends on what it is I dislike about the book, but more often than not I'll usually abandon a book.

message 24: by Lynn (new)

Lynn | 130 comments I usually have two or three books going at a time, so if I really don’t like one of them I might:

*give it a really good try to see if I could make myself finish it. I hate unfinished books.

*ignore it for awhile and try again later.

*take months to read it while I finish countless other books.

*finally just decide it isn’t me and ditch it.

DarDar Reads**Darlene Hallett (hallett9876) | 2 comments Lately I just abandon the thing. I used to have to finish it but aint nobody got time fa that! hahaha

message 26: by Kate (new)

Kate Reads | 48 comments I have such a hard time abandoning. I feel like I can't fully comment or judge unless I finished it. So now I am far more selective on what I pick up.

message 27: by Mercedes (new)

Mercedes I struggle to abandon, so I usually will rent from Libby and finish on audio.

message 28: by Kara (new)

Kara Beth (karabeth164) It honestly depends, some I can finish some I just can't and get rid of it lol

message 29: by Tasha (new)

Tasha | 178 comments Depends on how bad it is lol

message 30: by Claudia Marcela (new)

Claudia Marcela (navleu) | 5 comments It depends. If It's joint reading then I finish the book. If not, then I dump it.

message 31: by Diane (new)

Diane Lagana | 2 comments Toss it and move on

message 32: by Percy (new)

Percy The Angel (percydiangelo) | 24 comments i leave it for days, sometimes months, and then might go back if i find myself in the right mindset to start reading it again

message 33: by FantasyBookNerd (new)

FantasyBookNerd I'm definitely a DNF'er. I have far too many books that I want to read. sometimes I have persevered, but 99% of the time I ditch it.

message 34: by Peter (new)

Peter F... | 1 comments My answer is NO, finish it or keep it for some other time until you find interest in reading it. the best part of reading is that it takes your soul into the world of the writer. finish it I say, see the end of it

message 35: by Ari (new)

Ari (arisxbooks) | 45 comments I can't bring myself to dnf books, even if I put it away and read something else in between, I will finish it sometime. I just hate the feeling of incompleteness and I won't log any book on here unless I finish it, personally

message 36: by Jennifer (JC-S) (new)

Jennifer (JC-S) (jenniferjc-s) | 8 comments I am pathologically unable to not finish a book once I've started. I keep reading, in the hope that it will improve, and making notes to review it.

message 37: by Sarah✨ (new)

Sarah✨ | 11 comments depends. If it has an overall interesting plot then I will continue even if I'm S T R U G G L I N G. I feel like these books with huge plot twists or world building always have a little bit of boring bits but the ending is so worth the wait. If I genuinely could care less about the ending or the characters I will dnf.

message 38: by Avinash (new)

Avinash (avinashsharma) | 2 comments Abandon. happened with me recently on the 5 aM club

message 39: by Erica (new)

Erica | 10 comments Abandon for a while. But I usually go back to them and finish them later.

message 40: by Buckbeak (last edited Oct 28, 2023 04:39AM) (new)

Buckbeak | 1 comments I usually try to read on for a while. But still if i don't find the book amusing, i'll ditch it. i can never bring myself to continue reading a book that i don't like..

message 41: by Lilith (new)

Lilith Jane | 45 comments I often try to finish it when I'm like 70% done already but when I'm at the beginning or middle and I don't enjoy reading it, I'll DNF it.
Life's too short to waste time reading 300 pages of a bad book instead of 300 pages of a book you might actually enjoy.

It's not rarely the case though that I pick up my DNF books years later and enjoy them then. For example: I DNFed acotar several years ago and bought all the books in english last month. I actually really enjoy the series but back when I first started to read it, it was the worst book ever.

message 42: by Keren (new)

Keren Kassian (priestessofpen) | 1 comments I used to ditch, but realised I was ditching too many books for comfort. So now I soldier through until the end. If you happen to be still curious about something in the book, I'd recommend hanging on.

message 43: by Vicente (new)

Vicente (vicenteg98) No, I don’t skip ever a book. It has to be very very boring for me to abandon a book, but I read it faster than usual to finish it.

message 44: by Sharon ❀ (new)

Sharon ❀ I try my best to carry on, not necessarily curiosity but to see just how long I can hold on. I usually skim through it and if I get confused I just end up dropping it lol

message 45: by Maya (new)

Maya | 23 comments I finish it. Wish I could just give it up, but as soon as I start reading a book, dnfing it feels wrong, so I read the whole thing. I do however speed read and skip paragraphs or even whole pages, depending on how little I enjoy myself. (The more I hate a book, the faster I'm able to read it, because I usually don't care that much if I miss something, as long as I finish the book as a whole.)

message 46: by Viel (new)

Viel Adams | 13 comments I used to abandon the books that I don't like until I came across one book that I have abandoned, but somehow found myself reading it again and it changed my whole opinion about it.
So the lesson I have learned is not everything is as bad as I thought it was.

message 47: by Morgan (new)

Morgan Rose | 89 comments Tbh it really depends on where the story is going. If it doesn’t get better by at most half the book, I’m going to abandon it. If it’s a decent story but it’s not like AMAZING then i’ll try to finish it.

message 48: by Lynn (last edited Oct 28, 2023 02:14PM) (new)

Lynn | 130 comments I confess that Kindle Unlimited has caused me to dnf more books than I once did. When I paid for every book individually, I never allowed any of those expensive little suckers get away. It was easier to tell if I was going to like them when I bought paper books. Back then I stood in B & N and read a quarter of the book before I bought it.

message 49: by Jamie (new)

Jamie (jlbbooks) | 7 comments If I can't get into it and it don't enjoy it, I will skip ahead to see if anything piques my interest. If not, I put it away.

message 50: by Dee (last edited Oct 28, 2023 02:32PM) (new)

Dee Turner | 17 comments That depends on the nature of the book--I try to read a history, political discourse, or philosophy every 4th book--if the book has real value I'll plug along despite its length or heavy lift: one of those was American Prometheus, about Oppenheimer and the invention of the atom bomb--almost 800 pages long and in excruciating detail about conversations the book really didn't need. The one I'm currently wading through is also long, Rise and Kill First, but it's critical to any understanding of what's happening with Israel and Palestine right now. I hang on and tough it out with this sort of book.

But if I'm reading a fluffy chick rom-com that gets into smut, for example, I just dump it. Life's too short.
