SOLVED. YA(?) story about a young boy who's on a journey to find an important artifact. He is driving a sleigh with reindeer and is trying to find the artifact before his uncle does. Spoilers. [s]

I wish I could remember more about this story. I think it was either geared towards young adults or adults, because I remember it dealing with some dark themes such as death and maybe murder.

I think the story might have been about the Laplands. The main character was a young boy or teenager whose father had recently died, I think. The boy has to prove his rightful place in his society. He sets out on a journey to find a specific site or thing before his uncle or anyone else does. I think his uncle is trying to kill him, or maybe even killed his father. The uncle is desperate to find the thing before the boy does. I think it's a spiritually significant artifact or site.

It's winter and very cold, and the boy has a reindeer sleigh. He's racing to find the thing he's looking for, and maybe is being chased.

The boy does end up finding the magical/spiritual site before his uncle does, and finds the artifact that he was looking for. Maybe it was a drum? I think he finds it in a cave, and I think there's a dead body in the cave. Maybe it was the body of a shaman or medicine man? Or the body of his father. I don't remember.
