SOLVED. Middle grade novel about a therapy dog in a group home for children, 1980s or earlier. [s]

I read it in the late 80s, but it was probably much older. It was a story about how a home for children who had been removed from their parents adopted a dog and how she helped them. I remember one of the girls in the home was named Oriel. One boy takes the dog to a dog show. In one chapter the dog becomes pregnant and the kids care for the puppies. Ring any bells?

How many kids lived there?

All ages and both sexes?
