This was read aloud at a party I was at a couple weeks ago (2023), but I can't find anyone who was there who remembers the name of the book or the author.
The book is for young adults, its recent, it has a name like "Maverick" or something similar (but not Maverick because I tried searching for that). It's a made up word which I'm pretty sure is also the name of the main character. He's a kid in school whose teacher is telling fairy stories and a bunch of weird stuff happens and the kid ends up learning that he can jump across different stories. He ends up in the future having a joke telling contest with a computer or something like that? I remember it being really funny with a bunch of pirate jokes in it. And elephant jokes maybe? I remember the kid being really irreverent. There were queer characters as well maybe? I just remember everyone laughing but I was unfortunately really drunk at the time. One line stuck in my memory though, something about blue elephants being extinct makes the main character explode with rage and that was hilarious but I don't remember why. It was really, REALLY funny at the time though.
