I read this in 1975 to 1995. It had latest in the new genre of eco thriller written on the cover. It also featured some kind of fungi soldiers mutation that marched after people and absorbed them.
The scientist was blamed by some after the collapse, even though he had warned everyone for years. A mutated spider kills one character inside the hood of a futuristic gaming console in one scene.
