Here's a little something I thought up to help us get to know our members better and encourage participation in the group. I will do my best to get here every day but if I don't post a new question each day you will know I am incredibly busy!

9/13- If you pay full price for a book and you don't like it, do you HAVE to finish it?

message 3: by Koren (last edited Sep 13, 2023 09:01AM) (new)

Koren (koren56) | 3986 comments Mod
My short answer is yes because I'm really frugal. I prefer the library and used book sales but once in a while feel I need to support the book industry.

Definitely! If it is a library book then I just return it!

message 5: by Karin (last edited Sep 13, 2023 12:56PM) (new)

Karin | 798 comments I don't pay full price for a book unless I'm in an airport. This summer I read the one I abandoned and left at my son's apartment last summer and have yet to get back to the one I bought this summer. It's hard because so often I've already read the ones I'm really interested that they are selling there or they require more attention than I want to give while flying. Or they are familiar authors who I'm not interested in reading again, etc. It's an author I usually like, but it wasn't her best book. BUT it was perfect for a reading game and I could start it while there without buying another book.

My problem is the book I bought this year--finally chose it because the author is Canadian--turned out to be a sequel! She gave a great recap so I don't have to get to the first book but it didn't really grab me, either. Now if it could just fit something for that ongoing team game I'll finish it this fall, otherwise who knows? But how can I get rid of it if I haven't read it when I paid full price???

Long answer!

9/14: What is your favorite genre to read?

message 7: by Selina (new)

Selina (literatelibrarian) | 3104 comments Koren wrote: "9/14: What is your favorite genre to read?"

Memoir/autobiography of course! And biography, though bios can sometimes be a bit dry if they are strictly historical/academic.

I pretty much like all nonfiction, but it's a tie between bio, memoir, and autobio and true crime.

message 9: by Julie (new)

Julie (julielill) | 1675 comments Autobiographies/biographies are also my favorites but I read most genres.

message 11: by Karin (new)

Karin | 798 comments I don't have a favourite genre, and at the moment can't think of who I would like to read about that I haven't seen a book on but of course there must be someone!

I was trying to think of someone but when I did a search I always found a book. Will have to keep thinking.

I have been to a few but my city has grown so much that, traffic and parking is a nightmare so I avoid them now!
I like school galas though I think they can be fun.
Now we mostly have expos and trade shows, but I do like the old fashioned pumpkin growing contests and seeing all the prize chickens and farm animals at the A&P (agricaultural and pastoral) shows. The fairground attractions are total rip offs though and the food trucks...super expensive!

One year my school had a free fun day where the was a bouncy castle, spinning tea cups, and dunk the teacher throwing contest. I didn't volunteer to be dunked lol

I was trying to think of some people I was interested in and wanted to read about but that didn't have a book on them too but they all seem to! I think there are people who make their living from churning out biographies on every possible public figure/ celebrity trawling any revenue from whatever fans there are that will buy it. I wish there were more thorough biographies of people done from a psychoanalytic lens.

Have fun! I might have walked through one earlier this year that was held close by but that's all. I guess you have to really want to go and organise to go with friends if you're going to do it.

We have a wedding in our family this coming weekend so I may not get here every day to post.

9/18 Where is everyone from? I know where some of you are at but would like to know everyone! No need to be specific. I'm from southern Minnesota.

JasonReads | 1 comments My parents and I did when I was a kid, but stopped because the prices went up, the quality went down, and the parking was horrendous.

Apparently my dad was an absolute menace when it came to some of the games like ring toss and that coin toss where you had to get like a dime or a penny into a shot glass to win. He was like Steph Curry when it came to those games, lol. I remember one story where he won so many cakes and pies from one of the games that my mom had to tell him to stop! 🤣

Edit: This was for yesterday's question about fairs. Didn't see the new question before I typed, lol.

This is always a funny question for me--does in mean where do I live now or where was I born and raised? To me I'll always be from the Canadian west coast, northwest of Vancouver--on the main land but you have to take a ferry to get there (or fly or boat).

No problem if you're answer isn't with the question. Goodreads makes it impossible to keep answers with the question. I liked Shelfari much better. They called it 'nesting' where the replies were nested under the question. Now that gives me an idea for a new question!

I'm going to sit on the fence and say medium sized town.
Large cities can be overwhelming and rural can be isolating and a bit boring.

9/27 As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up? Did you achieve that dream?

That depends on when. When I was 5 and had a tick taken out of my neck I wanted to become a nurse--no.
When I turned 6 I was going to become the Queen of England by marrying one of Charles' younger brothers (as you can see I had a firm grasp of fairy tales but not real life)--no
Famous singer -- no
at 10 I started reading Robert Heinlein and wanted to become both a brain surgeon and a biochemist. no
Through most of high school I wanted to become an actress--no

As you can see I was a very realistic child. I will say that I did have real talent in at least one of those areas where I changed my mind (not being Queen of England.)

In high school I wanted to be a physical therapist. No, I didn't not realize my dream but when I worked in the nursing home and when I worked as a nurse I got to see what they do and then I was kind of glad I didn't do it. I thought it was kind of boring.

Ahhh, depends on how old I was at the time. When I was 5, I wanted to be Annie Oakley. By the time I was 8, I think I thought of myself as a horse -- a mustang roaming the high plains to be precise. LOL But by the time I was in college, I wanted to be a historian. So, I settled on journalism instead.

Your librarian goal reminds me, I always wanted to work at the library. I applied 3 times. My librarian friend informed me that they had an opening a few months ago. At 67 I'm thinking it's a little late for a new career move!!

My personal experience is that most places do not want to hire someone they think are only going to be there a few years. My friend at the library asked her boss (without saying she was talking about me) if she would hire an older worker and the boss said no. no worries. I did find a job where they were looking for someone that mostly wanted to work fill-ins, which was perfect for me. My grandkids are getting older and I want to be available when they have something going on. I could retire but I'm just not ready yet.

Why would they assume someone aged 67 would only be there a few years? Maybe if it was construction work but librarian work can be done for ages after age 67 if the person is healthy enough.

My favourite food - so difficult! It depends on what I feel like at the moment.
