I go directly to the new nonfiction. It is in the front of the nonfiction so unless you go all the around you can't miss it on the way to the bios.

Pick up the books I have on reserve.
If I'm working in one I go to the desk, or the book drop to empty it!
If I'm looking for books I tend to go to nonfiction and scan, or the withdrawn trolley to find any gems

11/11: What is your favorite place and why?

My favorite place is sitting in my yard on a warm summer day with a glass of lemonade and a good book.

why..um, can't you see I'm busy reading and relaxing?

Karin | 798 comments Koren wrote: "11/11: What is your favorite place and why?"

Good question! My favourite place was been ruined. It was at the watershed for our reservoir where I grew up. However they eventually had to replace to old, leaking wooden pipes which meant widening more of the trail plus the population has grown immensely and there are a lot more people. Also they cleared the trees on the other side of the creek (there was a wooden dam at the top of the falls to hold more water to get it into the pipes.)

I don't really have one now.

Maybe the young adult section or I'll just order online depending on which book I want.

My favorite place is the beach actually. I feel the sand on my toes, the water and the fresh air. I love going to the beach cause it feels... so comforting and relaxing.

I had to smile at this. My mother would only take us to the sandy beach a couple of times a year because it was so messy. This is the type of beach we usually went to and there were no barnacles because the rocks were smooth and round. We built forts with the logs (not nearly as many logs nowadays due to better booms), dug for sea glass in the rocks, swam, etc.

It's a pebble beach--the rocks are not large, but not so small that they are annoying.

2023 is almost in the history books. Do you have a reading goal? How are you doing with it?

I usually set a goal of 120. This year I decided to be easier on myself and made it 100. I am at 105 now.

message 118: by Selina (new)

Selina (literatelibrarian) | 3104 comments No I don't keep count. My goal is to read all the books I borrow and on my bookshelf. Before I need to return them. Good so far.

I did Bookathon this year and read 30 books from A-Z. I don't read 30 books a month though that would be 360 books a year I would probably read about half that, but then I process hundreds of them and 'read' quite a few that way.

message 119: by Karin (new)

Karin | 798 comments I usually set a goal and usually raise it. I am trying to keep my number of books down to no more than 2 per week on average (I remember when I couldn't even read 1 per week when my kids were young!) because my numbers soared during Covid and I need to be more active in the evenings again :)

message 120: by Hummingbird (new)

Hummingbird | 36 comments I do have a goal. I'm currently trying to complete that goal, but after this year I might just read a book here and there. As for how I'm doing well... it's chaotic let's just say. I have 2 books I need to read from the library.

message 121: by Julie (new)

Julie (julielill) | 1675 comments This year I had a goal of 70 and achieved that. I think I am going to do that number for next year.

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving and if you don't celebrate, then I hope you had a great week! It's been a little quiet around here, so here is a question to get the conversation going:

If you could relive one day from your life, which day would it be, and why?

message 123: by Karin (new)

Karin | 798 comments Oh, sorry, even though it's a great question, I don't do well with these sorts of questions because there is no way to pick one.

IRL I am normally fairly decisive as long as it doesn't involve choosing a favourite or a couple of other things. eg in music, I usually like it or I don't, but of course have many things I love/hate in there as well as some that are like/dislike.

Seriously I find taking loads of raw garlic minced finely is very effective in getting rid of cold and flu. You have to take about 1-2 whole bulbs/ of it/ day at the height of illness. But it really works in my experience and pretty fast too! I start taking it as soon as I feel a cold coming on and head it off before it takes hold. You can get away with less if you get it at this stage. Line your stomach if you're about to take a big amount.
Also, if you have cold and flu symptoms, avoid dairy.

That's interesting. My parents always thought that milk toast was the proper food for an upset stomach.

I do the garlic thing, too, but tablets, not the fresh bulbs. Just be sure to buy tablets made of dehydrated garlic bulb and not garlic oil. The other thing that really works when you have a virus is goldenseal, although it's much more expensive.

My dad was an MD and we didn't get any dairy for stomach flues even back when I was growing up. Milk used to be used for ulcers, but I'm not sure if it still is. We'd get dry toast and clear liquids. It might have been white toast, certainly before I was about 9 it was. I hated tea, and we hadn't heard of green tea yet where I lived (don't like that, either) but white tea might be even better (not actually white, by the way.)

I hadn't had congee yet, but later we'd move to chicken noodle soup and consommé.

I would think that congee made with chicken broth would be excellent because it's easy to digest. Plus congee is a comfort food. I'm so very glad I stumbled into a Cantonese restaurant that didn't have a separate menu for "round eyes." Whenever I ordered it after that they'd ask me over and over if I was sure I wanted it, but I loved it.

I have never heard of goldenseal, I will check it out.
Another thing that I have found works is echinacea. You have to ensure you get a good quality supplement for it to work though. And it is more expensive too.

That's can happen, sure. But I cannot bear being ill with a cold so I hit it stat when I feel a cold coming on.
