10/7: Who has been an inspiration in your life?

Music wise there's been at least a few inspirations. Michael Jackson, Whitney, Yasemin, etc.

However, life wise there's five people that inspire me the most and they are my friends.

That's tough to answer; I am so very bad at narrowing things down!

Christine Skarbek (euculturalissues) | 14 comments easy ones for $100, Art! Well, it is laid out in 286 pages of my political/adventure memoir -- Confronting Power & Chaos: the Uncharted Kaleidoscope of My Life. But to sum it up -- my predecessor, countess Krystyna Skarbek, Andrzej Kowerski (aka Andrew Kennedy) and all the men she knew who guided me through some crazy times in the 1990s. (You owe it to yourself to read the book -- really!) I would be nothing and lost if it hadn't been for them!

I didn't meet him, but I was a few feet away from Paul McCartney when he was leaving his hotel to go to the airport. I've met a ton of country music people. They are usually very approachable and available to their fans. The most famous is probably Brooks and Dunn. I have also met Josh Turner, Chris Young, Sawyer Brown, Tracy Lawrence are probably the more well-known.

That's a good question! My brother is an actor. The best man at his wedding wasn't as famous yet as he is now . It was actor AJ Buckley most lately of Seal Team (one of the main characters.) So I met him, but didn't really talk to him or anything. There were a lot of people I was catching up with that week.

Hummingbird | 36 comments Koren wrote: "Who is the most famous person you have ever met?"

Realistically no one, but there is a singer named Tweet that I want to meet someday.

Christine Skarbek (euculturalissues) | 14 comments Conor Cruise O'Brien and Sirs Brian Urquhart and George Ivan Smith. All of them worked very closely w/ Dag Hammarskjold, UN Secretary General

message 61: by Karin (new)

Karin | 798 comments Wait, I forgot about Moira Walley-Beckett, creator and producer of the TV shows Anne with an E, among other things. Also co-executive producer of Breaking Bad, etc. Not sure if she's as famous as AJ Buckley, and I did not meet her through my brother. I actually knew her, but not well.

Cool. I spent 3 years in California, but it was before I was an adult, so things have changed--my youngest child is 23, so before your time! I've been over the Golden Gate Bridge many times.

I read The Godwhale so many times starting at age 10 that I lost count after 38. But I read it so many times because I was pretty sure it was about sex and couldn't figure out the medical terms. Still a great, epic story (with a fair amount of sex in it).

The one I probably love best though, is Helter Skelter: The True Story of the Manson Murders. I have been rereading it periodically since my best friend loaned me her mom's copy in 1977.

Dang, that's a hard one. I've probably read uh Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone before, but I eventually grew out of that. I would probably say One Hundred Years of Solitude so far although I don't always feel like reading. What I was thinking of reading though afterwards was probably Anne of Green Gables because I've been wanting to read it for a while.

Mainly famous places in San Francisco because that's where we lived and I was a kid the first time and in high school the second time. We did visit places like Carmel, etc. When I was young we went to Disney Land, before we moved there, so that's famous. Plus Knott's Berry Farm (sp?).

We did visit the petrified forest in CA and Napa Valley so my parents could do wine tasting.

I'll half pay attention since the Dodgers lost in the Division Series.

message 78: by Karin (last edited Oct 17, 2023 12:59PM) (new)

Karin | 798 comments No, I won't, but my husband probably will. I am not a sports fan, especially not "slow" games like baseball. Twice I've been to professional games and have missed great plays because I got bored--don't know enough about it--and was looking around the stadium or whatever it's called .

I have only one team I'm loyal to, a hockey team, but I don't watch hockey because I don't care for sports on TV. I often quip, "if it doesn't have a puck, is it really a sport?" but of course my husband and kids disagree!

In the interest of full disclosure my dad and siblings, et al, like and play/have played other sports, too, and my nephew is a world class Ultimate player (my sister and her husband are very athletic even now, thanks to good joints and surgery.) My kids primarily did swim team.

I'm not a big sports fan though my father was a high school coach in baseball (whose team won 3 high school championships and nobody has surpassed his record yet though someone is tied with his record!)
However, if one of our teams is in the playoffs, I would probably watch the series.

I was watching the playoffs until the Minnesota Twins lost. Now I'm done for the year, although I may switch the channel to the game just to see who's ahead. They should have a half time show like football does!

We didn't have an ice rink where I grew up until I was about 14, then my dad, who was in his early 40s, started playing on the local commercial league and coaching my brothers (they are six years apart, so not both at once). My dad watched other sports as well, but grew up in Saskatchewan and played hockey in high school.

But as I said, my sister is a real jock--played softball, basketball and soccer in high school (she played soccer until she was in her 50s), and then rugby after high school. Two of my brothers also did sports, but hockey. One was quite talented at it but opted to not move to Vancouver to get the level he needed to really pursue it--he's the one who decided to become an actor while in his mid-20s.

I, on the other hand, was tall and skinny and got coordinated that way as an adult, but didn't have desire. I was better at music and theatre (so did have coordination, just not for sports. My other brother is quite coordinated but wasn't interested.

I used to love Halloween. I enjoyed making my kids costumes. But the kids are long grown and I only have 1 grandchild that is young enough to trick or treat. We live out of city limits so we never get kids at our house. I don't go to the adult parties. Too many people! So for me it is not fun without kids.

I remember my grandfather saying the worst kind of person is a liar. I don't know if it is the best advice I've ever gotten but it certainly ranks right up there.

message 96: by Karin (last edited Oct 31, 2023 03:21PM) (new)

Karin | 798 comments I don't celebrate Halloween although I did growing up. However, my husband and eldest daughter like to give out candy. She buys it and dresses up, he keeps track of how many kids come (not sure why, but he likes keeping record of things I don't find important and some I do.) Right now I'm holed up in the bedroom trying to ignore it as much as possible.
