Book - general: Brother and Sister meet man who gives them thinking caps which lets them go to a different land.
In the beginning: Brother and Sister are at a zoo, and run into a mysterious man who seems almost a little weird (?). For a Halloween dare, the Brother dares Sister to ring the doorbell of a 'haunted house' that all of the neighborhood kids avoid. Girl goes up, disappears for a long time, Brother investigates, finds Sister happily chatting with Zoo Man.
Middle: Zoo Man gives the 2 magical thinking caps (a bonnet for the girl, and an Indian headband-thing(?) for the boy) which takes them into a mysterious, wacked-out world. There is a crazy, coocoo, bird-like creature, that Zoo Man seems to be friendly with. At one point, the three go into this forested area, eat some of the fruit, and fall asleep, and are only saved because of CoocooBird waking them up(?). The group faces other difficulties.
The 3 go back and forth between magical world and real world. ZooMan seems to have a green(?) creature (I always thought of him as something like the Grinch) living with him, and GreenMan dislikes the 2 kids.
Unsure points: Maybe something about a cat. And maybe the thinking caps are stolen at some point - by GreenMan or Cat?
Finale: ZooMan, Brother, Sister, CoocooBird, Greenman(?) arrive at castle(?) where this guy is king(?) but he is the only one of his kind, so he wants ZooMan to make him a mate, because ZooMan somehow made King? ZooMan tries to work, but is frustrated because he doesn't really know how to make a mate anymore. Sister offers ZooMan her bonnet/thinking cap. ZooMan tells GreenMan(?) something along the lines of, "Don't you see? These thinking caps aren't real! The 2 just needed something to believe in to get to the wacked-out world." GreenMan(?) offers some rare, encouraging advice. Low and behold, a Female Mate appears for King, and they all live happily-ever-after.
That is all I remember about the book. I'm very sorry I could not be clearer on the details. It is quite possible that I mixed up some details, or combined two books into one - though I would like to think it is all in one book.
Thank you very much for your efforts in trying to retrieve this book for me.
