SOLVED. YA fiction. Very similar to "The Art of Racing in the Rain". From what I remember it is the POV of a dog as he struggles with trying to communicate that there's something wrong with the wife. Read around 2015-2018 in school library. Spoilers. [s]

They end up getting married and have a baby girl. One day the dog knows something is off with the wife, she is easily upset, yells at the daughter for not wanting to eat chicken nuggets(even though the dog can tell it has gone bad and the little girl does not want to eat it bc of that) and then the dog notices this rancid smell coming from the wife. The husband notices as well and asks her if she wants to go to the hospital but she adamantly declines because she knows theres something wrong with her as well and is hoping its no the case. They get over it and go on a trip(hiking trip). On the trip they see a little stream that the little girl wants to play in, the wife ends up slipping and hits her head on the rocks of the stream like 3 - 4 times. they rush her to the docter, where she ends up having brain cancer. She ends up dying and the parents of the wife don't like the husband/called CPS like that on him because one time, while or after the wife found out she had cancer (timeline sort of gets blurry), the husband and the little girl (daughter) goes on a huge hike in the winter, HE forgets to put the little girls hiking shoes/socks on so she gets frostbite and has to rush her to the doctors, where it turns out some of the kids foot nerves are damages, the grandparents find out and take her away. I remember reading this from the year 2016 - 2018 from a school library.
