Sonia (darktalynn) | 11599 comments Yeah, our Christmas is usually very low-key, especially when it comes to presents. This year, we overcompensated.

come up for air after Wheels, finished off the Dromes, spun

Golem
1 651+
2 Tagged Jewish or Judaism (at least 10 times)
3 MUD (any order) in title
4 Theme of hubris
5 tagged Folklore (at least 10 times)

Which, given we've been reading all the long ones for the last two months, is just classic spinning skills from me, yet again!

message 3003: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments LOL, no worries, Cat.

I will finally!! start To Lie with Lions which is 672 pages. :)

message 3004: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments Will also check if there may be a shorter Great Courses series on Judaism in the audible+ catalogue.

message 3005: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13022 comments If not, I may be able to squeeze in a Philip Roth at some point... Won't be any time soon though. I have a stack of stuff I've postponed because of challenges to get through first, and my reading is currently non-existent 😆

message 3006: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments Alas, no joy for Judaism for the time being.

message 3007: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments Here are our currently unclaimed tasks:

- sandals on cover (flip-flops/thongs accepted)
- the word VEGETARIAN in the text
- Set in Arizona or a state/country that touches Arizona (Mexico, New Mexico, California, Nevada,Utah)
- Tagged Jewish or Judaism (at least 10 times)
- MUD (any order) in title
- tagged Folklore (at least 10 times)

message 3008: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments I'll be able to take on folklore later if needed.

message 3009: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13022 comments I'm on with my hivemind book (none has materialised yet, but I'm only 1/3 in so far, lol). After that I'll take a peek and see what I can find.

message 3010: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13022 comments Actually, I have a MUD I'd like to get out of the way, as it's audio only so awkward for challenges, and has been sitting in my audible+ list for ever.

message 3011: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 10123 comments Mod
it seems the next BOM has "vegetarian" in the text. which is good news :)

message 3012: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments :))

message 3013: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13022 comments Just finished a book tagged Folklore... 8x... *sigh*

message 3014: by Melindam (last edited Dec 12, 2024 04:22AM) (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments What?! No "vegetarian" in The Faerie Queene?

Or flip-flops on cover? 🤭

message 3015: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13022 comments Apparently not, which is terribly inconsiderate really!

message 3016: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments Hence the -1 star, right? 😊

message 3017: by Sammy (last edited Dec 12, 2024 04:26AM) (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13022 comments Exactly! Mr. Spencer can't expect full marks if he failed to foresee the necessity of fitting his book to challenges 500 years in the future!

message 3018: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments 😅

Exactly so!

message 3019: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments Sammie,

you can kick out my book and put it for page count and if there's hubris theme, there as well.

I'm at 25% only, so it will be a few days before I finish my book.

message 3020: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13022 comments I think it could work for the theme...

One of the main settings is The House of Pride, and the Queen (modelled on Elizabeth I) was certainly not without it!

message 3021: by Sammy (last edited Dec 12, 2024 02:48PM) (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13022 comments I have just started a book that works for Folklore for another challenge, so can grab that task if you prefer not to read for it Mel...

Will probably be a week or so though.

message 3022: by Melindam (last edited Dec 12, 2024 11:37PM) (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments Sammy, happy to hand the slot over to you. After Niccolo, I'm going to read my MPG War book, so you'll finish yours way ahead of me. :)

message 3023: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13022 comments Ok. It's non fiction, so not as quick to read, but I need to get it done before we go away for Christmas or it's not happening 😆

message 3024: by Melindam (last edited Dec 13, 2024 04:26AM) (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments I was checking my TBR and -after hunting for a bigger image on the internet- saw that my audiobook, A Holly Jolly Diwali by Sonya Lalli has the woman wearing flip-flops. It's on my TBR, not too long, not a summer book and almost seasonal, so yaaaay!

I'm going to claim it, but it will be quite a few days before I can get to it.

message 3025: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments And with the upcoming Tolkien challenge I realised that I have to read Letters from Father Christmas to/with Domi, so we started yesterday and he seems to enjoy it. 😊

Also, thanks to Monsters-Wheel, he actually completed the goal he set for himself when I registered him on GR. He has read more than 25 books. By now he's at the 28th. 🥰

Great job Domi!!

Letters from Father Christmas was what made me realise I used to live on the same street Tolkien lived when he taught at Leeds. Saw the address on one of the envelopes 😁

I always used to write letters to the kids from Santa (which would be left behind in place of the sherry & mince pies and the carrot for Rudolph 😆), but they were nothing like what Tolkien did. Talk about being an awesome dad!

Excellent work Domi! Have you got a new favourite author, r is Roald Dahl still the best?

message 3030: by Dominomaj (new)

Dominomaj | 42 comments Thank you, Sammy and Cat.

I still love Roald Dahl but my new favourite author is Jeff Kinney.😀

Diary of a wimpy kid is a very good series.

If you haven't already tried them (and can get them in Hungary), we also enjoy reading the 13 storey treehouse series.

message 3032: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments Thank you, Sophie. It seems to have been translated into Hungarian but currently unavailable. Will do some digging. :))

message 3033: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13022 comments I've put my Expanse book aside for a few days while I finish up some annual challenges that were getting away from me.

The protomolecule hadn't made an appearance yet, but the book I just finished also has a hive mind, so will sweap out just in case it doesn't show in that particular expanse book 😁

Cat (cat_uk) | 10123 comments Mod
alternatively, I read Thief of Time over the weekend. It's not been made into a graphic, but others in the series have?

Or: I'm currently reading Guards! Guards! which has been turned into a graphic.

Incidentally: I will read the Jewish book, but probably starting the end of the week. I'll be starting the vegetarian BOM today

message 3035: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments I'm fine with Thief of Time being used for the graphic novel prompt, if Sammy's too. :))

message 3036: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13022 comments Definitely! I'll be a couple of days with the Expanse book still, and who knows, we may be able to use the pagecount the way your spinning goes Cat! 😂

message 3037: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13022 comments In the meantime, I'll be concentrating on my Folklore book today. Over half way, so will hopefully finish this eve, but it's very, very dry, so no promises 😆

Sammy wrote: "Definitely! I'll be a couple of days with the Expanse book still, and who knows, we may be able to use the pagecount the way your spinning goes Cat! 😂"

You were so accurate....

Humbert Humbert (Lolita)
1 650+
2 relationship with large age gap
3 author's first and last initial are the same letter
4 MC in a relationship under false pretenses
5 white cover

message 3039: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13022 comments Teehee!

Although I have just finished Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, which also works for the page count.

(and looking closer, the Expanse one won't, because it's under 600!)

message 3040: by Melindam (last edited Dec 16, 2024 03:38AM) (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments 😅

My Niccolo book works for first/last initials and white cover.

And have another book for age gap.

message 3041: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13022 comments Hah! Typical. After all that I find myself having just finished a book with flip flops on the cover.

Doesn't look like you've started yours yet Mel. Want me to swap them out?

message 3042: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments Yes, please! :))

message 3043: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments I will finish my Niccolo book today so Humbert H will be vanquished as well soon.

message 3044: by Melindam (last edited Dec 18, 2024 05:20AM) (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments H-H is gone.

Our next Monster is a worthy opponent:

Dragon Queen (Guards! Guards!)
1. 651+
2. Dragon on the cover
3. features a trans character
4. tagged POLICE at least 5x
5. new beginning is important to the plot (your interpretation)

message 3045: by Melindam (last edited Dec 18, 2024 04:09AM) (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments Have you already finished Guards! Guards!, Cat? 😉

message 3046: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 10123 comments Mod
Nope, still in progress. Later this arvo , so plug it in!

message 3047: by Melindam (new)

Guards! Guards! covers off task 2, 4 & 5. but no Cheery so no trans character. and we'll need a page count, please, Sammy ;-)

ETA: unless we are classing the Dragon as trans = ends up as female but has been identified throughout as male ?

message 3049: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13022 comments Sorry, it's been a bit of a day!

Maur (Hero and the Crown)

1 250-300
2 Skull on cover
3 MC is immortal
4 tagged "heroine" (5 or more times)
5 Four letter title

message 3050: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13022 comments Sorry, Expanse book too short for the Dragon, and probably won't get round to one long enough before the new year, as we're off to Scotland on Friday. Reading around my family is very much a "fat chance" situation 😆
