Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments Are we just unlucky, or are the wheels just 500-page heavy? lol.

Think it's unlucky!

😅

I have a few books that qualify now, but it will take me a while to read them.

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments How do we feel about robots being non-binary? I know that yes, they usually tend to be, but is it against the spirit of the task do you think?

(and the fact that the book is 496 pages doesn't annoy me at aaaaall... Honest! lol)

Might try reading locked in if we think that the gender of the MC not being stated counts.

message 158: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments I enjoyed that one! (to me the MC is male, because I listened to the Wil Wheaton audio version, lol)

I've just started an Asimov robot short story collection.

Cat (cat_uk) | 10122 comments Mod
I've listened to both the Wheaton & Amber Benson versions, so happily read Chris as non-binary :)

Finished off the Python. Cyclops is next up.

500 to 650
takes place on an island
character engages in some sort of trickery (your interpretation)
sheep AND people on cover
MC is a farmer

Not sure I'm a fan of the Greek wheel!

message 161: by Melindam (last edited Aug 29, 2023 12:08AM) (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments We are REALLY AND TRULY cursed with the 500-650 page count. 😅

But I am already at 35% with Lymond 4 and will definitely get onto Lymond 5 right away (I got hopelessly sucked in his adventures), so I can cover that and it also works for trickery.

message 162: by Sonia (new)

Sonia (darktalynn) | 11599 comments The cursed pages have a nice ring to it.

@Cat: And yes, I was feeding the chipmunks :P

Not at ALL Hot Prof, but ALL 500+ pagecount related 🤭

Well, talk about creating monsters, Sophie. 😅

Sammy, do I remember correctly that you read a shepherdess book for this task last year?

Something like this?

A Year in the Life of the Yorkshire Shepherdess by Amanda Owen

message 165: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments That's the author. The particular book I read was The Yorkshire Shepherdess by Amanda Owen

Pretty average book, if I recall correctly.

message 166: by Melindam (last edited Aug 29, 2023 06:16AM) (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments Thanks, I found a short audio version (just over 3 hours) for this one: Celebrating the Seasons with the Yorkshire Shepherdess Farming, Family and Delicious Recipes to Share by Amanda Owen . Will buy it, as it is currently on sale.

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments Yay to you for falling on the sheep grenade, lol.

Melindam | 8375 comments I guess the UK setting qualifies for "island" too?

The audible edition is not on GR, but the cover is the same, so I'll use the default edition and list the listening length.

Argh! I'm officially taking myself off the spinning!
Finished a long book & a monster.... Got this as a reward...

“Black” Jack Randall (Outlander)
1 800+
2 A character is abusive
3 MPG Historical Fiction
4 "plaid"" in text
5 Black cover

Don't worry, Cat. I am sure we'll do away with him. 😉

I think I'll be done with my book for Jorogumo today and then will be reading my books for Cyclops next, so if anyone has books working for any of the Drop Bear tasks, just remove my slots. If not, I will get there eventually.

SO much so!

I am genuinely taking myself off spinning duty as I only get stinkers!

yeah, but I'm not sure I've spun any that have required less than 500 pages...!

message 177: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments I'm ready for a 500-pager now! Have one lined up to read in the next week, lol.

I think Mel said we can bump her Drop Bear tasks, so slot it in there :)

message 179: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments I could, but it won't fit the other 3. So I'll wait and see if any other 500-pagers pop up in the meantime, if not I'll shove it there :)

Only fitting for this group! Are we sure there are monsters needing smaller page counts?

message 182: by Sophie, The other one (new)

I've got a 700+ book lined up which won't work for either set of long page numbers. Feels fitting somehow.

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments I'm just starting Cannery Row, which works for historical fiction. May or may not have an abusive character, but will know by the end of the day :)

I feel like saying: It's Steinbeck, of course there will! but actually, it's abused character that's a given rather than abusive!

message 193: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments Awesome, because so far Cannery row has plenty of less-than-perfect characters, but I'd not call any abusive and I'm running out of book 😁

I have an 800+ book that I can read - gets it out of the closet too! also has a 2 in the page count, so double win. but doesn't meet the others :(

It's a family saga, so will either race through it like popcorn or drag as I hate on most of the characters...

Oh! Fingers crossed, it will be popcorn.

Sonia (darktalynn) | 11599 comments Speaking of popcorn.... In my household, we always have a issue picking up popcorn, because I prefer salty, and Eni prefers sweet.

That was till we found out about this:

Now, if only they lowered the price and upped the amount, it would be perfect!!!

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments I remember visiting London as a child, when there was a popcorn shop. absolutely packed with loads of different flavours.

Naturally I went for chocolate.
