Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments Saved by the bell! My book just didn't want to fit anywhere at all, until one of the characters got pregnant and had a baby (just the one, unfortunately) in the last 10 seconds of the book. I'll take it! lol.

Children fell asleep before 10 and were woken at 7.30 for breakfast so exhausted by all the fresh air, parks, soft play, sand pits etc. Was a lot of fun and would take them again.

Sounds lovely, Sophie.

Currently, we have a heatwave (hopefully the last one this summer) in HU, which means everyone's just sticking around the house, me included, which does not help work productivity ... or just thinking in general.
Trains are very unreliable in this heat, so I cannot even escape to the office, lol.

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments sounds uncomfortable Mel!

On the flip side, here in Leeds we've had 2 days without rain since early June. So fed up of the weather!

looking for a bight side: the reservoirs did need the rain though, right?

on the other hand, I gather that the farmers have had a disastrous time - the wheat etc failing to dry and ripen.

Hope the Hungary weather breaks for you soon Mel.

In Leeds? No. We've not had any droughts here, unlike everywhere else in the UK, lol, so it's not been much of an issue. But yes, farmers having a nightmare of it.

When I first moved here, my husband-to-be told me "It never rains in Leeds". Turns out I'm married to one of the great liars of all time 😂

Ooof Mel that sounds uncomfortably hot and on top of each other.

That's quite the stretch without rain in Leeds. Summer there has felt wet and miserable but not quite that bad. Impressive fibbing by your husband, hope he's more reliable about other things!

Well, he wanted to impress you, Sammy, and keep you by his side, so it is understandable, maybe even forgivable, lol.

Melindam | 8375 comments We have to hang in there until Saturday, which still seems a long way away, so I banned all activities that would make our house even hotter including cooking, baking and ironing (not that the latter would be committed by anyone apart from myself).

We have air conditioning, thankfully, but try to avoid using it as much as humanly possible under the circumstances.

I have to defend Manchester as being the rainiest city, and also with the wettest rain. I've never been anywhere else that has the same ability for it's rain, whether stair-rods or drizzle to get you so instantly and insistently WET! London, for instance, has to try really hard - proper flog it down for hours in order to get the same levels of utter miserable sodden that Manchester manages effortlessly in seconds!

Properly heavy rain you take precautions against. I object to the days where the air is wet and it just seeps through everything.

message 117: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments HU Meteorology Service has just extended the heat warning until Sunday ... I can't even ...

Would love to be able to trade half of your rain with half of the heat here.

On a happier note, Audible US is doing a 2-for-1 sale, so I just went and bought The Extraordinary Life of an Ordinary Man A Memoir by Paul Newman and Code Talker The First and Only Memoir by One of the Original Navajo Code Talkers of WWII by Chester Nez .

I am upping my non-fic reading a bit, as I have neglected it during TT and the summer. :)

message 118: by Melindam (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments Cat,

for the rules, I did not find the restriction about children's books/middle grade and word count (maybe it's just me being even more stoopid b/c of heat).

Thing is, I just finished reading a book with my son (140 pages, no drawings) that has twins in it. It is by a HU author, so obviously it is not on audible or has an official word count verification.

How strict are you about maybe still using it?

message 119: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 10122 comments Mod
For me, this is a fun challenge, so if the four of us are in agreement that the rules are 100 pages +, and not to worry about word count we can use it.

I don't have a problem with that being our guide for acceptability of books. Sammy? Sophie?

FWIW, the principle I've been working with is that we have to finish a book after we get the monster, so no banked books being sed - I assume you guys are good with that as a team rule?

As there is no rush finishing books for this challenge, I can live with the no banked books rule. :)

message 121: by Sophie, The other one (new)

Sophie (drsophie) | 5692 comments Mod
I'm happy with the rule of over 100 pages with no word count issues. The same with not using banked books and just taking things as they come up.

message 122: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments I'm good with all that too :)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments Sophie wrote: "How are you finding the Crying of Lot 49? I really didn't enjoy it."

Big nope for me too. It was a re-read, and I was hoping to enjoy it more second time around, but no. I'm not big on American post-modern fiction in general (there are a couple of exceptions, and oddly love a lot of the European/asian stuff), but I live in hope every time I start one, lol.

message 127: by Melindam (last edited Aug 24, 2023 04:36AM) (new)

Melindam | 8375 comments I read it in my impressionable early 20s for uni and for some curious reason I loved it. But that's all I remember, lol. I don't know whether it would stand the test of time, so I leave my memories undisturbed. ;)

I need to learn not to start them. I often don't get the point they are trying to make.

Mel - seems like one of the experiences to leave alone and keep the happy memories.

It was weird. I didn't hate it but there wasn't a vast amount of point, and excessive weird sex for such a short book!

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 13020 comments I adore the likes of Nabakov, Murakami, Rushdie, Angela Carter, etc. It's just a lot of the Americans I struggle with.

I have some old favourites I dare not go back to either. I loved the Chronicles of Narnia as a kid, but when I went to read The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe to my kids when they were little, I found I really hated the writing and the condescending tone (not unusual in kids books, lol). I refused to pick up Prince Caspian, as that was my favourite and I am telling myself it was obviously far superior to The Lion... 😂

Unfortunately the Narnia books have not been translated when I was a kid, so I only got round to reading them as an adult and I wasn't that much impressed, but on the other hand, I know would have loved them earlier.

My son loved The Lion... book, we finished it just under 4 nights of bedtime reading, but he didn't like Prince Caspian.

Just in time! I was just about to finish a book and had nowhere to put it, and now it fits two tasks, and my next-up book another :D

I used up all my 500-pagers during TT... Need to buy more, but on a very strict no-spending ban at the moment, as hubby (self-employed) has had a scarily quiet summer.

Wouldn't mind, but daughter's wedding in June blew through all my savings 😂

Have any of you read The Extraordinaries by TJ Klune??

I am finding it annoying, not least the MC being totally oblivious to everything. Not sure I can cope with another 2/3rd of a book like this...

and I am SOOOOOO hoping that there is another couple of twists hidden below the two that have been sign-posted from the get go...

Melindam | 8375 comments Sophie, does your book "Paper targets" also fit the task author FN or LN starts with a letter from SWORD?

I found 2 books with this title:

Paper Targets: Art Can Be Murder and Paper Targets and both would fit for author.

I will remove my The English Air from that slot as I am not sure when I am going to get there reading it.

-------------

I am wrestling down Lymond 3 (500+) and then going for another 500+.

As we removed the word count rule for children's books,
I have a 500+ book that fits the "author initials found in VEGEMITE", plus it has a boa-like snake on cover (it's a drawing, but it's clearly a giant snake) and it is supposed to be a carnivore.

Gergő és az álomfogók (Gergő, #1) by Gyula Böszörményi

So only the "set in AUS" is missing now from Drop Bear.
