I read a book about a decade ago (around 2012 I think, I read it during the summer) that had an average kid (nersy, unathletic, clumsy, etc) from our world get pulled into a parallel or alternate universe where there were medieval style kingdoms, purgatory, and he was a prophesied prince for the main kingdom. I for some reason remember the main character's name being Aiden or something similar but I haven't had any luck with that name so it is likely wrong

I do vividly remember that the soldiers for purgatory were described as wearing all black plate armor, with a roman-style horse hair plume on the helmets.
I believe it was written from a first person POV

The most similar book I have found in my own searches is Gregor the Overlander but there are some differences from my memory and the sample I read of the book:
1. in my memory, the main character had no siblings, and he was the prince himself
2. I don't remember there being cockroaches, I remember the MC being discovered by humanoid/elf-like people
3. I remember him falling through in a forest, rather than underneath the apartment complex

Not all of the details match, but The Door Within by Wayne Thomas Batson has an MC named Aidan who goes to an alternate medieval-style kingdom filled with prophecies and evil soldiers working for a villain named Paragory.

Aidan is also described as being unathletic and dorky, I remember.
