► UNSOLVED: One specific book > Urban Fantasy series based on card decks. Gaining cards gives you powers, losing them loses powers (though this detail is murky) and having no cards leaves you dead. Main character was a woman. People had animal-themed nicknames. Read around 2015-2019.

tamanna (4nna) | 2 comments Like I said above: an urban fantasy based on card decks. The details are super murky, but I know for sure that gaining / losing cards are good and bad respectively, and that having no cards leaves you dead. The main character was a woman, and for whatever reason I imagine her being southern, though this is probably false. I very specifically remember that people who had these card decks had animal-themed names. They're immortal until they lose all their cards. None of them really interacted with each other. One man tried to steal their cards, and they had a giant showdown with him at the end of the first book? (Though I suppose that's pretty common—don't we always have giant showdowns with the antagonist at the end of a book?) Two of the card-holders were married, which was considered strange. The love interest was also a card-holder and taught the main character how to handle the cards. These were kindle unlimited books, a series of at least two, probably more. I think I read this somewhere from 2015-2019, which I know is a pretty big time period, sorry. I remember there was a scene in a diner, which is also very vague. Hope someone can help me out.

tamanna, do the books ever mention tarot cards?

What's the location?

What are the main characters' jobs?

tamanna (4nna) | 2 comments To respond to all of you: thank you so much, but no—I don't believe that's the book I'm looking for. I have no clue if they were tarot cards—in my mind, I don't remember the word "tarot"—but all of the cards had specific powers or could make the user do specific things. Again, no clue about their jobs, locations, or names. I do remember the girl is trained by a grumpy, closed-off card-owning man to use the cards, though I don't remember the inciting incident—she wasn't born with the cards or anything, she only started using them at the start of the book. I also vaguely remember there being a romance aspect between them, though it wasn't fully developed and I don't think they ended up together in the first book. I read the first chapter of the second book and put it down, and I remember there was some distance between the main characters; for whatever reason, they weren't in contact? Sorry, I know this is no help, but that's what I remember.
