Yes, that's the one I was recalling. Thank you. Thought it might help the op if there were any suggestions on it.
What i remember:
Title might have been something like "the long journey".
People on the generation ship live in two shifts with two people occupying each room, one working while the other sleeps. The young (teen?) male protagonist finds inconsistencies in the ship layout plans, with certain parts existing on one version which are missing on others. Together with a girl from the other shift he tries to figure out what's going on.
SPOILERS:
Turns out the ship is actually an underground shelter and they are still on earth after a nuclear(?) war. They never quite learn why the ruse, but they find a way to escape. The reader is left unsure about their fate after they do so.
In a sort of epilogue we learn about the reasoning behind all of it. turns out there were riots and a push to leave in the generation before, way before it was safe to do so. They lost a lot of people who probably died on the surface. So they came up with an elaborate hoax to make the next generation believe they physically could not leave by decking the shelter out like a spaceship, complete with fake displays that showed star maps.
