YA Fantasy - Main protagonist is boy (orphaned or poor) has (some) blacksmithing training - goes to a mage school befriends a noble boy and crafts wolf amulets/medallions for his friend group.

Hi I have been trying to remember/find this book for years here are the details I remember, sorry its not a lot!

- I am pretty sure I read it in 2015/2016
- It was the first in a series and at the time I read it the second book had not been released
- About one main protagonist, a boy who is either orphaned or very poor
- He has some blacksmithing skill/is blacksmith apprentice
- Goes to a mage School (or school of some description)
- Befriends a young noble's son (who might be his roommate) at the school and I think a couple of other random misfits, the noble is important though
- he has some sort of mentor that he crafts a sword for towards the end of the book with a Wolf medallion on the pommel
- I think the key at the end is that he crafts these medallions (with a wolf) to give to his friends and there is some importance or significance around that.

I really can't remember any more about it but I can say that it is not:
Novice by Taran Matharu
Blacksmith's son by Michael G. Manning

Although they have some similar themes.

Any suggestions welcome - even if they don't fit all the descriptions perfectly I could be off with some of it - but what is key is the medallions/amulets with the wolf on it - one thing I do remember clearly.
