I'm pretty sure there was only one victim, who died as a result of the attack, among some other differences around the characters backstory.
Doesn't look like it, I think I'd be able to recognize it based on the cover. This book sounds more down the romance angle too which I don't think was covered as much.

Yes it would have been in a high-school library and I don't think I would be able to access any book check-out records

Protagonist dealing with grief related to possibly the witnessing of a race based attack on someone they know (person attacked dies) possibly from Asia or specifically India (unsure). At some point during the book there is a large vigil held for the Victim.
I think the protagonist was female and possible of Asian descent (may not be).
There was some kind of family run store involved whether it was the protagonists families or the victim's.
Book may have been set in the UK I can't quite remember.
Cover may have had a leaf (maybe an ivy leaf) on it or was green? (this might be completely incorrect).
