Review

Rating this one was hard for me. The last half of the book was easily worth 5 stars, but the first half was rather slow for me, so I deducted a star for that reason. This installment in the series was a good deal more emotional than previous books. There were still light moments, which were definitely needed, but there were also parts that made me cry, and that's never happened in this series for me before. I'm very curious to see what happens next!

I've had this series on my TBR for a long time but just never seem to get around to reading it, one day I'll start it because It seems like a very good series

This book was just ok for me. Some of the stories were pretty good but some were just blah. It's hard to stay interested in a book for me if it's not mostly grabbing my attention. I usually give a book about 50 pages to grab me but with this type of book each story is only 20-30 pages so it has to almost grab you in a couple pages. There were definitely a few stories that did that which made me then interested to read more actual books by those authors.

Maybe if I would've read this during December rather than the end of March it would've interested me more so maybe I will decide to re-read it next winter.

I was looking at that earlier and someone already posted their reviews but the instructions said when you roll tomorrow post your roll and your reviews so I think we wait.

I'm not entirely sure what time we roll I think it's any time after midnight or anytime in the morning as long as all the reviews are in but I would ask on the discussion thread just to be sure.

Dice roll day! I'll be rolling for this week in just under 6 hours. Its only next week I'll need someone to roll for me. Usually people keep track of the time for it on the discussion thread.

From what I've seen of other people's reviews, it's one of those series you either love or hate. I'm firmly in the love camp. :)

This book was pretty okay. I really liked her style of writing but just like any other book that is a collection of stories some are good and some are not. I found myself not wanting to put it down though. Which is why it read so quickly for me. I feel like the author was very loved while she was alive and now even after she is dead. All in all it was a good book.

Week Two Review

Review:
As someone who has lived in the South for their entire life, there is a special place in my book loving heart for Southern Fiction. And it doesn’t hurt that this particular book was set in my home state.

I picked this book up because I needed something light, easy, and quick to fill out a challenge on a Goodreads group, and it certainly delivered. This book did a fun job of highlighting the quirkiness of southern small towns (because in what other town would one ever find an off beat doll museum). The storyline of the mother’s disability was handled with a lot of class and I appreciate it for that. The author never belittled Stacia because of her blindness or deafness and it made for an interesting bond between Stacia and her sister in regards to the making of the dolls. By the end of the novel I think Henry had become my favorite character. He seemed the most sane of the characters and he owned a book store so what’s not to love? And the last scene when he steals the police car to chase down Nonny made me squeal a little bit inside.

One thing I was not a big fan of in this book however was the relationship between Jonno and Nonny. Now I understand we weren’t exactly supposed to be rooting for them to be together, their divorce was a large part of the storyline, but I just couldn’t stand them. Nonny talked about how she had trouble actually ending it with him for good, but I could not for the life of me see how she had trouble with that. There did not seem to be any kind of attraction between them at all.

Okay, here we are! Week 2: Number #1 in a series:

Read from March 15 to 31, 2015

I hadn't expected to like this as much as I did and, certainly, the way that the story dumped you in a different world and expected you to start swimming was a bit off putting. However, once I got used to the fact that A) This was a sci-fi novel B) Everything Aria was experiencing was virtual, and C) The large group of characters you meet in the first chapter are largely irrelevant after that, it was far smoother sailing.

There was also dual viewpoint, between Aria, and Perry. Perry does not live in a virtual existence. In fact, he lives on the outside of that, where Aether storms are a reality and life is much more deadly. Or so it at first seems. Oh, and Aria and Perry don't like each other. At all.

I really thought that the reasons behind that were well written. The dual viewpoints were fantastic, giving scope and fleshing out both characters equally. It wasn't just that they didn't like each other, it was that the other of them had each been the cause of the other losing everything. Or, again, so it seems.

If you can't quite tell from the nature of this review, there are just a few twists and turns in the plot. I loved them. I loved the characters that Aria and Perry met and interacted with. I loved the way that everyone on the dangerous Outside had some sort of supernatural ability, and that everyone who was kept safe and healthy on the inside had a downside instead, caused, no less, by the very safety that they lived in.

The conditions that Aria and Perry find themselves in are quite extreme, but I found their reactions to that very well written and rewarding. I always wonder in books like this, when the characters have such good reason not to like each other, whether I'm going to cringe as the author slowly brings them together. That was not the case in this novel.

Talon was more interesting as a plot point than a character, as was Vale and Captain Hess. I think the only reason why I was okay with that was because of how well many of the other characters were written. I found Roar delightful, not just for his insertion into Aria and Perry's lives. Cinder was a surprisingly amazing character, his gifts quite different to that of the other Outsiders we saw. I loved Merron and the Victorian castle / medical facility.

Can't wait for the second one, even though I had thought this was a stand-alone novel. Maybe now that I've read it, Goodreads will start recommending to me other novels.

Review

I have mixed feelings on this one. The characters are wonderful and full of life, and I find the world very interesting, albeit a bit confusing because you're pretty much just thrust into it and have to learn as you go. On the other hand, the book description is a bit misleading. Yes, murders of debutantes do take place, but there are almost 200 pages between the first and second murders, so practically half of the book isn't about the murders at all. I went into it expecting one thing and got another, which is most of the reason this fell short of 4 stars for me. I enjoyed it, but it just felt off. That being said, I will read the second one because I did really like the characters and I'm curious where the story is going from here.
