Petya | 234 comments I re-read Isla and the Happily Ever After (Anna and the French Kiss, #3) by Stephanie Perkins because I need a light happy read
Finished: 07/05/15
Rated: 5 stars
Review: I love this series and its characters. This might be my favorite just because of the final part of the book and when they all come together. I liked how Josh and Isla interact and their story and I loved Isla's best friend.
There aren't any bad aspects to this book that I can think of and the writing was beautiful.

Emma (M) Week 7
Spot 57

Anna and the French Kiss (Anna and the French Kiss, #1) by Stephanie Perkins
Options: Set in France

★★★
I enjoyed Anna and the French Kiss, but didn't love it. I liked the setting in France and seeing it through Anna's eyes as a newcomer to the city was great - it has certainly sparked an interest for me in going there some time. However, sometimes I felt that the story got a bit slow in parts and I felt my attention starting to wander.

I also find stories where the main characters suffer from endless mistakes in communication or the creation of misunderstandings because of a lack in communication tiresome, and this story certainly had its fair share of these two situations. I also didn't like the fact that Etienne having a girlfriend throughout this whole story and found it a bit unsettling.

However, saying that, I loved the friendship that did develop between Etienne and Anna and though this made their love story much more believable. I also liked the depiction of her friendships with other people in her life and thought they were believable, both through the good and bad times.

Anyway, although Anna and the French Kiss is not on my favourites list, it was enjoyable enough for me that I am definitely interested in continuing on with the series.

Emma (M) Hi Everyone,

Sorry for the late post, I accidentally posted the below in the wrong SS thread hours ago and only just realised!!!

We rolled an 8 (5 + 3) this week, which takes us to spot #65.

This means we can read:
#6 in series
#5 in series (again!), or
Location: Australia

Also, although I will fine to compile the reviews and roll next Friday, the two Fridays after that I am away on holiday and may not be able to do it depending on my activities and internet access. I will still be able to read the required books but is there anyone who can take over the review compilation and dice roll for me on Friday 22nd and Friday 29th May while I am away?

While this is nowhere near my favorite DH novel, it does a great job explaining more about Ash's past and the creation and evolution of the Dark Hunters. For one, I feel that it was an abrupt change in having it set in a totally different area than where most of the previous novels had taken place. I do like how it explaining more of the past, but did feel that parts of it were rushed and not written as deeply as it could have been.

Saving Francesca by Melina Marchetta
Finished: 11/05/15
Rated: 4.5 stars
Review: I loved it. I the beginning it was a little boring and depressing but then things picked up and got interesting. I loved how Francesca made new friends and found her own little group and stopped depending on others decisions.
If it werent for all the little comedic breaks, this book would be a lot depressing.
One scene that broke my heart was when Francesca and Luca were in the library and she was repeating to him "Dont cry." Oh man, heartbreaking.
Overall, I really liked the writing and all the characters. The romance wasn't one of the great things about this book but the other characters compansated for that.

Amazing! My favorite of the series so far. These guys are just so freaking perfect together yet complete opposites. It just works. This book was funny, heartbreaking, sweet and just everything I love in a book. And let's not forget little Nugget. I want a wombat of my very own!

This was breeze to read but had no depth. I could live with that if the MCs weren't apart more than they ever were together in the book. Bad communication skills killed the story for me. It could have gone there but everything was just falling in love with no real reason other than physical attraction. MC1 (Caleb) is a hooker and MC2's(Patton) mother was a hooker/drug addict. I don't understand why that information at no point in this book is addressed. It common sense that more people than not would have dislike for the hooker PROFESSION . He express his dislike of the profession one time and they never had a proper conversation before getting it in.

This was a fabulous story. I think I laughed, cried and screamed inwardly with anger and frustration at the antics of the characters. There were many light, funny moments but there were some also very serious issues discussed as well. I enjoyed every minute if this book and can't wait yo try another one of this author's books.

Finally got to see James and General Derek together. Poor James has been waiting for 6 freaking years!! I adore James, like really love him. Tortured and beaten and all he wants is to finally get his man. It sure took Derek long enough to pull his head out. Lots of action and so many characters to remember and finally some good lovin'.

This is a sweet, uncomplicated, and oh so funny read. What else would you expect when you pair a tightly strung, smart ass, sarcastic, unhappy PR exec with a laid back, sweet, funny, well-built pit crew member? Eve and Nolan's banter is amusing and, at times, had me laughing out loud. The story is not deep, but definitely entertaining.

The Winner's Curse (The Winner's Trilogy, #1) by Marie Rutkoski

Review: I liked it overall but there were some issues I had with this book. The writing style was beautiful and the plot was intriguing and kept me reading most of the time but there were a few places where it almost put me to sleep.
Another issue was that if Kestrel was the daughter of the general and, as it was said many times in the book, really smart and cunning, how could she trust some slave even if he had friendly relations with her. It was said that she was trained since she was a little child in battle and tactics and overall to become a soldier. Then how did she not see through Arin's lies. That time when she blabbed when the general was leaving with the army I was like "No girl don't do it, you are going to regret it."
Now, I did not like Arin. There were few moments where I kind of liked him but then "Nope." He was a treachers character. I did not trust him or sympathise him even a little bit. It frusturated me every time Kestrel made a decision based on her feelings for him.
The most heartbreaking scene was when Kestrel was taken to her home and she kept seeing people she knew dead or dying and when she realised her mistake in trusting Arin. It was really sad.
In general, I liked the plot and the most of the characters.

The Miniaturist by Jessie Burton

Option: Set Aside list (page 6 of list)
Rating: 4 stars

I didn't really know what to expect going into this book but I was pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed the setting in historical Amsterdam and was quite surprised at how oppressive it was, given how free and open the city is now in comparison. I thought the storyline was intriguing and I enjoyed the characters, both good and bad. I felt quite claustrophobic at times with the situation Nella found herself in but I am assuming that is exactly the way the author wanted the reader to feel. Nella is, after all, stuck in marriage that is very different than the one she hoped she would be in, and I felt very sad for her plight. I must admit I am really enjoying a lot of historical fiction lately and The Miniaturist is no exception.

This is mostly m/f series with few mm mix in. I loved the fourth book. Since the previous book was a success. I thought I check out this book. This was good story. The love connection happened too quickly for my liking.I'm not into heavy BDSM theme books but this one wasn't too bad.
