Memoir of woman recovering from trauma, part of it takes place during her time as a student at the Iowa Writers Workshop

Not a recent book. at least 10 years maybe quite a bit longer. The woman suffered from I trauma—I believe it was child abuse but it might have been rape. A few chapters cover her period as a student at the Iowa Writer’s Workshop. There’s a scene where she rents a room in a house and strips the floor and paints it.
