Michelle | 1602 comments Completion Post - Book 1

At the Quiet Edge by Victoria Helen Stone

Book - At the Quiet Edge
Author - Victoria Helen Stone
Date Read - 7/5/23
Rating - 2.5 Stars
Review - The book started off really strong with a solid story that kinda gave me Stillhouse Lake Series vibes except the husband was not a lunatic serial killer. We have our MC, Lily and her son Everette, living in an apartment on the storage unit facility grounds that Lilly manages. Lily's ex-husband is on the run after he stole millions from unsuspecting clients leaving her in debt and the town pariah.

The first third of the book was intresting as we get to know the characters and the background of lily's story. Then it went downhill from there and the story began to get bogged down by repetition. The MC kept repeating the same thing over and over with nothing much happening. It got so bad that at one point I was ready to throw my kindle across my office. Not only was she annoyingly repetitive, she also had the common sense of a tomato. In fact I think a tomato was smarter.

Our last third of the book was not a surprise and the twist was obvious. How she didn't see it is a mystery to me.

To the Moon and Back by N.R. Walker
Rating: 4 Stars
Review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Adorable and sweet. Benson, the baby, does not overtake this story. It's focused on the relationship between Gideon and Toby and how Gideon learns to take care of Benson, and how both Gideon and Toby deal with their attraction. I recommend this book.

Cash & Cary (Men of Memphis Blues, #1) by Sam E. Kraemer
Rating: 2 Stars
Review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Overloaded with monologue, info dumping, and telling, telling, telling. I don't recommend this book. Read 'Reading the Signs' by Keira Andrews instead for a good baseball and relationship story.

Sweet Anticipation by Andrew Grey

Jennifer (jhaltenburger) | 1166 comments Ariane -- I just finished The Song of the Cell An Exploration of Medicine and the New Human by Siddhartha Mukherjee . I didn't like it as much as I liked several of his other books -- this was a leeeetle more scientific/non-fiction and a little less introspective. That being said, I really liked it and I never walk away from one of his books without feeling richer for having read it. Few science/medical writers in my experience are as accessible as Mukherjee and he is really gifted. Thank you for the excellent pick!

Marty (martymill) | 1299 comments Zero at the Bone The Playboy, the Prostitute, and the Murder of Bobby Greenlease by John Heidenry
Finished: 7/2/23
Rating: Four stars

This has been on my TBR for a long time. It was a very quick read. I had heard of this crime from the show, A Crime to Remember, but forgot that it happened in Kansas City (I used to live there.). Talk about a pair of murderous idiots - Carl Austen Hall couldn't keep his mouth shut or stop flashing cash around and Bonnie was so besotted with him, she relinquished any morals she may still have had up to that point. I didn't know that there was an adopted older brother and a sister in the Greenlease family. I also didn't know about the corrupt witnesses/cop involved. Very interesting.

Spare by Prince Harry
Finished: 7/26/23
Rating: Five stars

This was heartbreaking to read. What Harry suffered after his mother died was criminal. He wasn't beaten, but he was certainly fed to the wolves to make Charles and Camilla look better, and neglected as far as mental and emotional health is concerned. It's a credit to him that he's gotten his family out of that cesspool. I've read all the complaints about the book and they're rather superficial. I felt that his portrayal of life among the royals was honest and fair. In fact, he was far kinder to them than they were to him. Much luck to him and Meghan, I say.

I'm not going to get my third book read this time.
