Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 8492 comments Goodreads was DOWN a good part of yesterday. When I first tried this morning (about an hour ago I still got the "down for maintenance" message. I tried to set up a poll in another group and it wouldn't let me do that, but it DID let me post a message. Hoping this one posts ...

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12761 comments I just tired to look at my home page and will not open-then I get a message that GR's is down for maintenance. I was not able to get on to GR's at all last night. Sounds to me like more unwelcome changes are coming. I would think they would have warned people if such a drastic change was being made,

Robin P | 5950 comments It was down for maybe 12 hours but I haven't seen any changes, I dread that!

Amy | 13033 comments This is helpful, because I’ve been having trouble getting on from my phone. I kept wondering if it was my phone.

message 55: by Robin P (new)

Robin P | 5950 comments I just tried to add another sentence to my previous message and couldn't.

Amy | 13033 comments It’s definitely still wonky. Funny how that affects us, that this is such a part of our life blood.

Theresa | 15860 comments This is the first it's been reasonably stable, showing everything it should where it should and letting me post.

@Jen - assume that was an aberration due to whatever shut the system down and unstable for so long. My home page now is back to normal. If in another 24 hours you are still finding a different home page, scroll all the way to the bottom of the page and look on the right side. If it shows a desktop version link - click on that and your normal home page should appear.

Mine is the same. I use a desktop with Firefox Browser (at some point I found Firefox works better for Goodreads than other browsers--not sure if it's still true. It's not good for everything, naturally.)

Jen (jentrewren) | 1131 comments Still in the weird format. Still have no ability to reply to individual comments etc and still only have news feed on my home page. Definitely chucked a hissy fit on mine.

I’d try what Theresa said if you’re on an iPad. (I wouldn’t know how to do that on my laptop.) Whenever I get weird pages (on my iPad or laptop), I start by clearing my cache of temporary files, browsing data. Close the browser, and reboot.

I really think you are in mobile mode, meaning the version in the app which is awful. If because of the news feeds your home page scrolls forever, just pull up your book lists, scroll to very bottom of page. On the right in small type it wiil say either 'mobile version' or 'desktop version'. This is telling you which operating system is in use on your GR home page. If you see 'desktop', click on it and you will be back to your preferred home page. It will generally stay as desktop after you switch.

Sometimes after a software update or an outage or a full moon or whatever it will default back to the mobile version. You can flip it back to desktop in seconds this way on any computer or device.

If I am wrong and it says 'mobile version' then send an email to help. I received excellent help quickly twice rec3ntly on issues.

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 8492 comments Actually, Theresa .... when it says "mobile version" or "desktop version" that is the link to SWITCH to whatever it says.

So if it says "mobile version" you are CURRENTLY in desktop mode.
Definitely NOT intuitive ....

I thought that is what I said - from perspective of what version I suspect Jen is suffering - the mobile version.

In fact I just read my post again and that is what I said. If she sees desktop version then she needs to click on it. If she sees mobile she needs to go to help because she is clearly not in desktop version.

I listened and loved it. Managed to get through it in less than a week, and I got a lot done since I wanted to get back to listening and I have to be doing something at the same time. Double whammy!

Theresa, You are my hero. I finally found this thread again (it had also disappeared) and following your instructions has put it all back to normal. Thank you so much!

Jen (jentrewren) | 1131 comments This month's tag is great. There have been so many sucky ones lately, but this month has reminded me of things I used to be interested in before my life went to hell and started messing with my head. SO GRATEFUL to have been reminded and I refuse to let life and other people keep those interests from me again.

I The first book I read for the tag was a bit heavy going but absolutely fascinating so I thought I needed something lighter for the second one. Unfortunately some of the behaviours in the second one triggered me as they reminded me of things which have happened recently (it was a zombie apocalypse, I thought that was safe fun). Now I'm on to a book about the Andrea Doria which I doubt anyone else on here would like but it's diving, so another of my interests which was lost. So VERY GRATEFUL this tag happened now. I've been watching a bunch of adventure movies and Doccos too about people who have had amazing adventures (Ranulph Fiennes, Scott, Amundsen and Nirmal Purja plus Anatoli Boukreev of course) and again have some motivation to go on some adventures and finally dive with great whites. THANK YOU PBT!

TWO great choices, Anna-pi!

I am delighted! Just keep that trick in the back of your mind because it will be needed again. GR seems to default to the mobile version for no discernible reason occasionally though it always seems to me to happen shortly after I do a security or system update followed by a device restart.
