SOLVED. YA Horror with wasps that spread some illness that turned people to metal. [s]

I remember reading a bit of it in middle or high school and want.to look up the full plot summary, all I can remember (and this could be entirely wrong, it's been years)

It took place in a school
The main character was a boy, I think somewhere in the range of 12-16 but I don't remember at all, so it's a complete guess
The main plot revolved around the fact that there were some wasps (or other stinging insects) that spread an illness that caused people to turn to metal? And they had to find a way to either escape or find a cure. I don't remember at all, just that I thought it was a neat concept.

i read a book once called “wicked” or something but i can’t find it online- i think it also had wasps that spread illness- and they had like a giant dome and infected people lived outside of it. and there was like an island w a tower with someone who was insane? and the two main characters had to venture outside? is this the same book or no
