Charlene Taylor | 4 comments The Girl Who Talks to AshesThe book starts around a teenage girl crushing on a boy. They go to a concert and the balcony they are standing on collapses under them, which pulls both of them into the plot. The girl's father is a fireman, and she's a great student. Her mother died of cancer when she was young. She's being treated for epilepsy, and her Dad is crazy controlling about her taking her meds.

It's set in the modern world, I think NW USA, and there is no known magic in the world other than this girl, and a bunch of New Age practitioners that don't have "real" magic.

SPOILERS:
She finds out that she was abandoned at the firehouse as a baby, and wants to search for her birth mother. This leads to her figuring out that she doesn't have epilepsy, but the meds dampen her power to move objects and people forward and backwards in time. She can talk to ghosts if she's near their bones. She uses this power to try to find her mom, who she thinks may have been a hitchhiker that disappeared about the same time she was abandoned. She ends up sharing the knowledge of her power with the hot boy from school, who kind of witnessed it when the balcony disappeared underneath them in a time warp, and with the sheriff to get access to certain files. The sheriff ends up hiring her to solve other cold cases due to her unique ability.

I remember everything about the book but the characters names, and of course, the title/author.

I think I read this in either 2022/2023. It was a newer book. I've searched all my online book purchases in vain, which leads me to think it may be a smaller author whose book I picked up at a convention, since most of my books are purchased online or at a convention. If you know this book, please tell me! It was a great read! I want to recommend it, but don't remember enough to find it.
