SOLVED. YA, possibly Middle Grade - book and maybe series, male and female protagonist that are best friends and enter books, specifically I remember Romeo and Juliet.

The protags are best friends, and I believe the girl is goth (the boy is not)?

I think it was meant to be a series, but I only vividly remember the one book, where they were sucked into Romeo and Juliet. It was a really big deal to the girl when Romeo and Juliet first saw each other and it was obviously love at first sight. I think they wee trying to make it end happily, and I don't know that they succeeded.

I don't think the protags ended up as a couple, just stayed best friends?

I read this in Jr. High, so from about 2007ish - 2009ish. The cover was illustrated in a kind of cartoon style, and I think there may have been pictures in the book?

I found it!! Lol I reread an old diary to see if I'd mentioned anything and I found the series!

It was the "Cracked Classics" series by Tony Abbott, and the Romeo and Juliet book specifically was called "Crushing on Capulet"
