Couldn't find chemistry/lab/laboratory but everything else fits.
Did you also read the Trick series by Scott Corbett? Or you could have mixed it with the Stuey book. https://www.librarything.com/nseries/...

Glad you found your book, Chris.

I read this book in sometime between 1976 and 1981. The book was probably published between 1950 and 1975, most likely in the 60s.
I'm trying to remember the title of a book I read from the elementary school library that was about a boy who had a chemistry set or science lab and he wanted an old desk (a roll top desk) to keep his lab stuff in. The person with the desk (possibly his dad) was going to give the desk to whichever boy (his brother or another boy wants the desk also) could bring in the most firewood. I think he had an older brother that wanted it too. So he was at a size disadvantage in getting firewood. He winds up with the desk after seeing the power or telephone company employees replacing a pole and he convinced them to give him the old pole.
I had thought the book was "Everything Happens to Stuey" but recently found that book and the plot was different. Could be a sequel to "Stuey" though, or maybe just a similar character.
