Jayme | 4603 comments I thought I would be starting right on time, but the roses that I ordered which were to be delivered next week came early. They are going to be beautiful, but don't they know a Toppler has begun!!

Let the Toppling joy begin!!

Katrisa | 4508 comments I just got to my hotel. I still have a few hours left of Under the Banner of Heaven: A Story of Violent Faith. It is really interesting! It goes into a lot of Mormon history too which is interesting to me as I live in Utah. I was raised Mormon in California (not a member now) so I did grow up hearing church history from the church's perspective, but there is lots in this book I was definitely never taught! I can't wait to watch the Hulu show when I get ack home.
And the redwoods were absolutely breathtaking! and the forest goes right down to the ocean - it's amazing!

Jayme | 4603 comments Ok, Katrisa that is now 2 of your books that I have put on my TBR. :)

I should be finished with my chunkster sometime this evening. I won't report it though until Amanda or Odette report theirs because my book is the middle connection and if I report it when I finish it our books won't connect which is one of e the task requirements.

I will then start Cherry Pie or Die for first in a series. I switched my book for that task because the other book I was going to read was rather long.

You know they should call this challenge "Can you read more books from your TBR then you add to it?" :)

message 58: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4558 comments I tend to look at all the books read during the toppler (even the ones I don’t participate in) after the toppler is over. That way I can horrify myself by adding a lot all at once.

message 60: by Katrisa (new)

Katrisa | 4508 comments So we had a long driving day today so I finished my Under the Banner of Heaven and we also ended up listening to You'll Never Believe What Happened to Lacey: Crazy Stories about Racism. I haven't really looked to see where else it might fit, but if nothing else it is a book tagged as humor and we are allowed to redo tasks, right?
I will go report my first book and we can decide what to do with the second one.

message 61: by Katrisa (new)

Katrisa | 4508 comments I was just checking out the other tasks - You'll Never Believe What Happened to Lacey: Crazy Stories about Racism also fits 2017 - country of birth.

I'm starting my chunkster this morning and hoping to get a large amount of it done today, listening on x2 speed. I'm going to spend the day crocheting and listening to The Lost Metal.

Jayme, I had another look at [book:Fire with Fire|63030187]. MPG is thriller, mystery, crime not contemporary fiction.
I am nearly finished Rain Dogs, which has MPG of mystery, crime.
So I will pair these 2 together for the chunkster.

I will replace Rain Dogs in that the Series category with The Berwyn River Killings, which is also the 5th book in a series.

So will not continue with Surfacing which I am more than half way through, and get back to it later for the annual challenge

Sorry, when I was planning my reads did not read the criteria carefully and missed the bit about linking the 2 chunksters.

I think I figured out how it got mixed up. When I was looking at your books, I linked a different book with the same title Fire With Fire which is a contemporary fiction.

One of your books also has to connect with either Amanda's The Lost Metal or my book The Winners. They have to form a continuous chain/connection. They don't have to be the same connection, but connected somehow.

I'm going to take a look at all of our books and see if we can figure out a continuous connection.

Also, is fiction your favorite genre? You could plug in Surfacing there, so you don't waste what you have read.

Okay I think I figured out how we can connect all of our books. Could you look it over and see if it makes sense:

Amanda: start Chunkster connection with The Lost Metal
Jayme: The Winners connects with The Lost Metal because they were both published in 2022
Odette: Rain Dogs (Detective Sean Duffy, #5) by Adrian McKinty connects with The Winners (Beartown, #3) by Fredrik Backman because they both have a body of water on the cover
Odette: Fire with Fire connects with Rain Dogs because they both have MPG of mystery and crime.

If this looks good, can you change the "How it Fits" in your reporting message for Fire With Fire. It should now say connects with Rain Dogs because they are both MPG mystery/crime.

So sorry I messed that up with the wrong book link for Fire with Fire. There are a lot of books with that title!

Casceil | 2728 comments I read a second book for what I thought was an empty slot (bird on the cover) but I see now Amanda has signed up for that. I will look for another category for my book, Rage Before Beauty: A Bellbrook Murder Mystery book 2, but so far I have not found one.

Oh bummer. I was looking at tasks too. Does your book take place in an actual or fictional town/city? If it's fictional, it would fit in year 2021 task 71. I'm still looking at other team members tentative reads to see if we can flipflop, but not having any luck.

If it fits, can you change it on the reporting thread? It it doesn't you will have to delete the thread.
Sorry about that.

Update: Amanda is giving you the bird slot. Disregard my above idea.
Thanks, Amanda!!!

Ok let me figure out how one of your new books is linked to either The Winners or The Lost Metal because they have to form a chain with the other chunksters read also.

Also, please delete the previous chunkster reporting thread and we'll start fresh.

So will the other two books that you read for the chunkster be counted somewhere else? I'm assuming 2018 - fire in the title
and 2015 - 5th in series? If so, can you create reporting threads for those books? Thanks :)

And I love Richard Powers' books.

Jayme | 4603 comments new chunkster connection links:

Amanda: start Chunkster connection with The Lost Metal
Jayme: The Winners connects with The Lost Metal because they were both published in 2022
Odette: Bewilderment connects with The Winners because they are both 1st MPG fiction
Odette: Surfacing connects with Bewilderment because they are both 1 word titles.

I think we've got it.

If you read a book, but someone has already taken the task that you were planning, it's ok we can still double up on that task and get the points. Especially if it's in a year that we aren't going to finish. Points, Points, Points!!😉 Sorry my competitive gene is flashing.

Casceil, Sorry to see that my book doubled up with yours for 'fire' in the title, as i had planned to read it for the chunkster category.
After finishing it, found out it did meet the criteria for that category as there was no connection with the other books. I did not read the chunkster instructions carefully enough and thought it was just a matter of reading one book for 500 pages or 2 books totalling 500 pages!
As Jayme says we can double up and get the points for each book, and so does not make any difference.
