Welcome to our July 23 challenge read of And Then There Were None And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie by Agatha Christie.

Ten strangers, apparently with little in common, are lured to an island mansion off the coast of Devon by the mysterious U.N.Owen. Over dinner, a record begins to play, and the voice of an unseen host accuses each person of hiding a guilty secret. That evening, former reckless driver Tony Marston is found murdered by a deadly dose of cyanide. The tension escalates as the survivors realise the killer is not only among them but is preparing to strike again... and again...

Published in 1939, while Europe teetered on the brink of war, this title is the world's best-selling mystery, and with over 100 million copies sold is one of the best-selling books of all time. The novel has been listed as the sixth best-selling title (in any language, including reference works). We have never read this in the group before, so it is certainly time we got around to it!

Please feel free to post spoilers in this thread.

Susan in NC (susanncreader) | 5082 comments I said in other thread, this was borderline horror for me, with the relentless tension and increasing body count - and that last scene, ugh! Dark! No last chance for that last victim to be last one standing…I kept imagining the poor police eventually arriving, yikes, imagine being the first to arrive!

Franky | 84 comments I thought the ending was pretty tense too, Susan. It really had me on the edge of my seat and you have to read until the very end.

Susan in NC (susanncreader) | 5082 comments Yes, the dread in the end, as the last victim sees the noose; then the scene at the very end as police arrive. I couldn’t help wondering if they could sense the residual despair and desperation, I’d think it would hang in the air like a miasma!

Franky | 84 comments Very true about the noose and complete tenseness of it all. I was just thinking in general how much this novel has inspired this whole idea of people arriving to a remote place and being bumped off one by one. It seems been done and so many times in book and films, especially horror ones. I wonder how many other authors or film producers were inspired to create something similar based on this novel.
