I know it doesn’t fit the theme of the book club, but would anyone be open to reading some classics/the Great Books of the Western Canon? :)

I read some classics, but I don't read poetry or anything "ancient." I'd be interested with those caveats.

Not even St.Augustine? 😢 I think everyone should read his Confessions and On the Happy Life at least once.

Probably should, but it's unlikely. 🫣 Sorry!

I’d be willing to read “great expectations,” “Emma,” or “wuthering heights” with you, Stephen!! Not rn though… I’m reading too much atm 😅

Ok! I'll lyk when I can do it, XD

Here are books from this month's nominations that I would be interested in doing a buddy-read for:
Moonscript
On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness (or might that be a 2nd BotM option since it came in second?)
Swift
Mark of the Raven
Anyone interested in doing a buddy read on one of these?

Yeah, that’s the botm, so we will also have general threads open for that. Lots of ppl participate in that :)

Right now I'm reading The Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera, if you'd like to join :) It does deal with some mature themes and is a philosophical novel, but don't let that put you off to it. It's been a great meditation on whether or not our actions/lives have meaning, that is, do we pick between the weightiness of commitment/meaning or the lightness of nihilistic living/insignificance. Or as Jordan Peterson so starkly puts it "either everything we do matters or nothing matters."
I've also been wanting to read more Russian literature. I have 5 unread Russian novels, which are:
1) The Master & Margarita
2)The Idiot
3)Notes from Underground
4) Anna Karenina
5) War & Peace
I'm fine with reading any of those :)

Okay, so I had to do a search for the one you're reading and finally found that I can borrow it on Hoopla on the 1st when my library lets me borrow 3 books. I can't believe Scribd didn't have it.
Anyway, I listen to audiobooks at 1.6 times normal speed so I can probably catch up quickly. Also, I'm game to read pretty much anything, I just don't read books that oppose my faith. Sex scenes I can fast forward past and language never bothers me (unless it's a lot of gd or jfc/jc).
I seriously want to read Anna Karenina and War & Peace this year. I started both of them back in high school (early 90s lol) and never finished them.
Have you ever heard of Dr. Zhivago? It's also Russian Literature and was a movie that I watched in like the 9th grade. I've always wanted to read that, too.
Hi there. It's my first post here. I would like to read The Gathering Storm: The Second World War, Volume 1. Not much chance of anyone agreeing but thought I'd ask.
I’d love to buddy read War and Peace with some peeps! I should’ve commented here before starting Anna Karenina 😔.
What do you think Stephen?I read about 1/4 of it in 8th grade when I bought it… and haven’t picked it up since😅.
Angieleigh, would you want to read it too? Maybe all three of us could read it together!
I would be interested in Anna Karenina or War and Peace, but probably not this month. I have a lot to read this month, including library books that have to be returned and our BotM.

I would love to! xo
I’d love to read War & Peace with you all! I’d like to finish the novel I’m currently reading, but after that I’d be ready to read War & Peace :) I’ve been wanting to read it before I read Andrew Roberts biography of Napoleon.
When would you all like to start? How many pages a week would you like to read? I can create a reading schedule, unless you all would prefer not to have one :)

Luffy, I’d normally say yes to reading any history books, but I’m currently working on a personal history project focusing on late antiquity; plus I’d like to read Antony Bee it’s one volume history of WWII before reading a multi volume history on the subject. I hope you find someone to read it with, though! :) Welcome to the group btw!
Hey y’all! I’m planning on starting Foul Lady Fortune by Chloe Gong soon- and i wanted to see if anyone could/wanted to buddy read it with me??

Great! Tell me if you are reasonably free from 1st August. September or beyond that works for me too. :)
Stephen wrote: "Luffy, I’d normally say yes to reading any history books, but I’m currently working on a personal history project focusing on late antiquity; plus I’d like to read Antony Bee it’s one volume histor..."Thanks for the welcome Stephen! I have read Anthony Beevor's WW2 book. It was accessible to me and I learned something, though I have forgotten a lot by now. Good luck on your project.
Elise wrote: "I’d love to buddy read War and Peace with some peeps! I should’ve commented here before starting Anna Karenina 😔."Elise, I shouldn't interfere but thought I'd better. W&P is a tough customer. It is very outdated in form and will frustrate most people. Anna Karenina is a piece of cake compared to W&P. Hope this helps.
