SCI-FI Trial about a man who replaced every organ of his body after accident

I read only part of this story in 1998-99 and I'd love to know how it ends!
I don't know how long is the full story (a full book, a short novel, or a short story).

It was set in a court. Lawyers were arguing about the humanity of the defendant. He had several accidents (maybe he was an F1 pilot?) and he gradually replaced every organ and limb of his body with cybernetic ones, including the heart and eventually even the brain.
