November 1 we will be starting our ongoing challenge: A Monthly Challenge that relates to one of the off-beat celebrations/observances for that month.

This is going to be a very easy-going challenge with only 1 task each month. The last week of every month, I will set up a poll with a list of celebrations for the next month and which ever one wins will be the task for that month.

In order to keep our group threads clean, I will create 1 thread for each month and everyone will be able to post which book they read for the task for that month and any thoughts they would like to share. Within each monthly thread, questions and comments regarding that month's celebration can be posted as well. This way we will have a clean thread at the beginning of each new month and will help eliminate repeat questions.

***EDIT: I do not have a requirement for page numbers on this challenge. Children's books are okay! Also, a question came up in a message to me whether I will allow more than one book to be counted. I will allow more than one book as long as they are read within the month for that task. These additional books will be another 1 point added to the score board. If you miss a month, you can read a book outside of the month, but only one book will count and it will be counted as 1 point.

Below, I will keep a running list of the monthly tasks for easy reference and a scoreboard (2 points for each task completed within the month it should be and 1 point if the task is completed after-the-fact).

Shanna | 51 comments This is so fun Linda Grace. But i just want to make sure i understand you correctly. are you saying that you could complete the November task in December for 1 point. but if you complete it in November it is worth two? and in each month we only have one task to complete?

message 5: by [deleted user] (new)

Correct Shanna. The scoreboard is just to see how you are doing with the tasks compared with everyone else.

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 719 comments This sounds great!

I feel that this will be a really great challenge for the following reasons:

(1) It is very "easy-going" (meaning that I will be less likely to become all-consumed by it *coughCynthia'sSeasonalChallengescough*), while still maintaining
(2) A fun way to pick books you might not have read otherwise, complete with
(3) A very easy point system.

I can't wait to find out what our first task will be!!

message 7: by [deleted user] (new)

:) I hope it does go well Sara.

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 719 comments Yes. I meant: Is NaNoWriMo the reason you'll be writing like crazy?

message 14: by Usako (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 74 comments Hmmm. Wonder if I can slip a task like this in. HRRMMM. Should be exciting and it's such a lighthearted challenge (adore) so it doesn't compete with the Seasonal Challenge. THANKS!

I will add you to the scoreboard. For future reference please post all books, questions, etc. in the thread for the month they correspond to. Thanks! :)

message 21: by Sara ♥ (last edited Nov 06, 2009 08:20AM) (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 719 comments I finished Inkdeath by Cornelia Funke today. It was LONG. Good, but LONG. I really liked how it ended... although she kept the ending WIDE OPEN for a spin-off series, didn't she? ;)

Errr... Oops! I didn't see that last post... My bad!

message 22: by Teresa (new)

Teresa (teresainohio) Skull Duggery takes places in Mexico

You can report at the corresponding month thread from now on. Did you finish this book? If so, I will add you to the scoreboard. :)

Shanna | 51 comments Is this where we post what we've read or the other forum?

I finished Death by Bikini 11/10/09

message 28: by [deleted user] (new)

Shanna, the other thread is fine. I am only using this thread as information if anyone wants to see how they are doing or what the past topics were, etc.

message 30: by Jennifer W, WT Moderator (new)

Jennifer W | 1289 comments Mod
Is the April Fools topic that there is no topic?

message 31: by Lydia (new)

Lydia (loverofinformation) | 596 comments This challenge has been included in the YA Reading Challenge #4, Linda Grace. Is there a topic for April done?

message 32: by Misty (new)

Misty | 1505 comments Yeah, I was just wondering the same thing. It would actually be nice if we could pick for a couple of months, so people can decide whether to do this in the challenge. Though I guess it's not really necessary.

message 33: by [deleted user] (new)

I will set up the polls for the next two months so you can pick ahead of time. Sorry about April's. I've was in the mountains for a week and had no access to internet and I've been real sick. I will get that up today. Sorry again.

I hope you are doing better! And welcome back :)

message 37: by [deleted user] (new)

Thank you! I am feeling much better. After a week of meds and lots of rest!! :) Good to be back.

message 38: by [deleted user] (new)

For those of you who need to know the next couple months of tasks for the YA Challenge...

June 2010: First Day of Summer - Read a YA book with "sun" or "summer" in the title or a YA book that takes place by the beach.
May 2010: Holocaust Memorial Day - Read a book from GRs Holocaust Shelf, or a YA book with "remember" in the title.

message 39: by Amy (new)

Amy So for the June books we can pick anything correct? I'm slowly getting into all these challenges and such so I'm looking forward to it!

message 40: by Kellee (new)

Kellee Moye (kelleemoye) Amy- For June you have to read a book with Sun or summer in the title or a book that takes place by the beach. They have to be YA books.

message 41: by Amy (new)

Amy Okay guess I'll start researching now! LOL!

message 42: by [deleted user] (new)

Thank you everyone for participating in our monthly challenges. I have had a lot of fun putting them together. I'm sorry to say I will be leaving goodreads, so if someone would like to continue doing the monthly challenges, please be my guest. Thanks again for all the participation and HAPPY READING!

message 43: by Kellee (last edited May 02, 2010 06:36PM) (new)

Kellee Moye (kelleemoye) Oh no- does anyone know why Linda Grace left?!?!?!
So sad :(

message 44: by Jennifer W, WT Moderator (new)

Jennifer W | 1289 comments Mod
Wow, that was sudden. I hope she's OK. She'll be missed.

message 45: by Amy (new)

Amy Is anyone going to take over? I'm sad b/c I was looking forward to the monthly challenges.

message 46: by Kellee (new)

Kellee Moye (kelleemoye) If no one else volunteers, I can take over......

message 47: by Angela Sunshine (new)

Angela Sunshine (angelasunshine) Wow! I hope everything's okay with her too.

Kellee, I think you'd be great at the monthly challenges. Does anyone want to put it to a vote, or should we just be glad that someone has volunteered and jump on the chance?!

message 48: by Jennifer W, WT Moderator (new)

Jennifer W | 1289 comments Mod
I'll help, too, if you want, Kellee. I'm not a very organized person, so points and that sort of thing are beyond me, but I can help put together polls and such.

message 49: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Awww, I hope Linda Grace is OK! :(

message 50: by Kellee (new)

Kellee Moye (kelleemoye) Jennifer W wrote: "I'll help, too, if you want, Kellee. I'm not a very organized person, so points and that sort of thing are beyond me, but I can help put together polls and such."

That'd be great Jennifer W. I can do the organized stuff and you can be the campaign manager :)

Linda Grace had May and June chosen already, so I'll set up those discussion boards. I'll keep track of the points and we'll work on July when it gets here.
