Book 1 of The Icemark Chronicles series by Stuart Hill - Ky's find.
I read this book in 2019, it was for teens (from 12 to 17 I guess). The story was the following: a Princess from the north, who doesn’t like to study with her Master (whose name sounds like Pucinelle), is made queen when her dad, an enormous ginger that has a little kitten’ is killed in combat trying to block the armada of Romans coming from the south, whose leader wants to invade the North and only believes in logic. As she (the princess) is only a young girl of 14 yo, she goes on a quest to find Allie’s up in the upper north. On the way, she encounters a young healer/sorcerer whose name sounds like Gustave/Octave, but is shorter. He insists on traveling only on the back of a donkey. They finally arive in the North, where the make Allie’s with giant Leopards that speak and have a precise hierarchy. Some vampires also join their cause, which is time because the Romans are really close. Then follow an epic battle where the Roman’s are decimated, and the princess cut the (left) arm of the Roman general.
I read this book in French, I know the is a second tome where the princess and sorcerer have children (3/4), the Roman general is still alive and looking for an opportunity to have his revenge, and there’s a weird daughter that inherited the dad’s power, but is on the bad side
