15 Point Tasks

15.1 A Ship of Two Halves
Help Thread

In April 1947, a British ship called the Stancliffe ran aground near Sharpness, Gloucestershire. A local shipyard engineer was able to cut the vessel in two, then sail both parts down the River Severn to Cardiff Docks where they were rejoined. The repaired ship was later put back into service under the new name of the SS Gripfast.

Read two books, from two different options.
Required: specify the options.

A: Read a book which is set at least 50% aboard a ship or at a port or dock. For the purposes of this task, ships are defined as large vessels of a commercial, passenger or military nature. Ports and docks are defined as docking points intended for the aforementioned ships (i.e. not marinas for personal vessels such as yachts). Dry docks (for ship repair) will also be accepted. Spaceports and spaceships are not included, we're specifically looking for maritime settings.

Required: if the setting is not obvious from the GR description, provide a reference.

B: Read a book which is part of a duology (only two whole numbered books in a numbered series). The series name and number must be indicated in the GR title listing in grayscale parentheses following the title or grayscale italics above the title.

C: Read a book by an author who uses a pseudonym. The book may be written under any of the pseudonyms (or the real name) used by the author.

Required: If the pseudonym is not evident on the GR author page or GR metadata for your book, provide a reference link.

15.2 Anime, Past and Present
Help Thread

As much as anime (Japanese animation) has had a huge boost in popularity since the 80s, it isn’t as recent a phenomenon as you might think! Momotarō: Umi no Shinpei, the earliest feature-length animated film from Japan, dates to 1945, and was made as propaganda for World War II.

Read two books, from two different options.
Required: state the options.

A: Momotarō: Umi no Shinpei had a runtime of 74 minutes. Read a book that has 7 and 4 in the page count.

B: A great deal of modern anime is adapted from manga or other short fiction. Read a book with an MPG of Manga, Comics, Comic Books, Sequential Art, Graphic Novels, or Short Stories.

C: The first (and to date, only) anime film to win an Oscar was Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away, winning the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature in 2003. Read a book first published in 2003.

15.3 Fun in the Mud
Help Thread

The Glastonbury Festival is one of the highlights of the UK music scene, taking place annually in June. It’s particularly renowned for two things: the sheer amount of mud festival-goers can expect to find themselves caked in after spending a weekend in a British field, and the legendary Pyramid Stage, where world-famous acts perform to crowds of thousands.

A list of headliners from 1970-present can be found here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glaston...
For the purposes of this task, only acts who performed in some capacity will be accepted. This excludes those who were scheduled to be headliners but were later replaced, and those who did not perform in 2020 due to the festival's cancellation.

Choose an option.
Required: state the option.

Option 1: Read two books, one book A and one book B.

Book A: Read a book whose author has a name part that matches part of a headlining Glastonbury act. The word must match exactly, "the" "and" and "'N" are not included.
Example: Death at La Fenice by Donna Leon – Kings of Leon
Required: state the act.

Book B: Read a book with a word in the title or subtitle that matches part of the name of a headlining Glastonbury act. The word must match exactly, "the" "and" and "'N" are not included.
Example: The Black Echo – Echo & the Bunnymen
Required: state the act.

Option 2: Read one book that satisfies the requirements for both A and B options.
E.g. Pineapple Street by Jenny Jackson (Manic Street Preachers/Jackson Browne)
Strange Weather: Four Short Stories by Joe Hill (Weather Report/Joe Cocker)
Black Girl Unlimited by Echo Brown (Black Uhuru/Echo & the Bunnymen)

You may use the same word for both author and title, provided the word can be found in the name of two different acts. (e.g. "black" in both Black Uhuru and the Black Crowes).

You may use the same act for both author and title, provided two different words are used (e.g. "Florence" and "Machine").

15.4 Reading's In Our Blood
Help Thread

In 1940, Dr. Charles Richard Drew made pioneering breakthroughs in medical science, developing storage and transportation methods for blood and plasma which meant that transfusions no longer needed to be done person-to-person. Not long after, the first blood bank was founded, with several other hospitals following suit.

Choose an option.
Required: state the option.

Option 1: Read two books, one book A and one book B

Book A: About 55% of our blood is plasma, and the remaining 45% are red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets that are suspended in the plasma.

Read a book with a cover that is (according to Tineye) at least 55% yellow (for the plasma) OR at least 45% red. https://labs.tineye.com/color/
Complete directions for using Tineye can be found here: "How Do I Use Tineye?

Required: Post the cover.

Book B: The four blood groups are A, AB, B, and O. Read a book which features all of these letters in any combination of the title/subtitle/author name. Letters must be used at least as many times as they appear within the blood groups (i.e. two As, two Bs).

Examples: A Morbid Taste for Bones by Ellis Peters (all in title)
The Blade Itself by Joe Abercrombie (AB in title, ABO in author name)
Elephants on Acid: And Other Bizarre Experiments by Alex Boese (AAO in title, B in subtitle, B in author name)

At Home A Short History of Private Life by Bill Bryson At Home: A Short History of Private Life by Bill Bryson

15.5 Come Fly With Me
Help Thread

It’s the Summer holidays and time for jet-setting, woohoo! Every airport has an IATA Airport Code that identifies it – you’ve probably seen these codes on your luggage tags when you check in for a flight. Read a book by an author whose initials (in order) match one of these airport codes. IATA's official search function for airport codes is here: https://www.iata.org/en/publications/...

Examples: Arthur C. Clarke – ACC – Accra, Ghana
C.J. Sansom – CJS – Ciudad Juarez, Mexico
Tom Rob Smith – TRS – Trieste, Italy

Required: Identify the airport and the code when you post.

15.6 Wrens and Riveters
Help Thread

Although their contributions are often overlooked, women were instrumental in supporting the war effort in the 1940s. The iconic image of Rosie the Riveter was inspired by women working in manufacturing in the US, and the majority of the British codebreaking force at Bletchley Park was made up of members of the Women’s Royal Naval Service (known colloquially as the Wrens).

Read a NON-FICTION book with the main page genre Feminism, Engineering, or Technology.

15.7 The International Court of Justice
Help Thread

Required:If the setting is not identified in the GR description or metadata, provide a reference.

In honour of this iconic institution, read a book featuring a main character who works in a professional health or social care role (e.g. a doctor, therapist, surgeon, midwife, paramedic etc.). For the purposes of this task, we're specifically looking for human healthcare, so not veterinarians. If the job is not evident from the Goodreads description, provide a reference.

15.9 Fire Up The BBQ
Help Thread

At the risk of inviting torrential rain by the mere mention of the b-word, Summer is (in theory) barbecue season! Read a book with the letters BBQ found in any combination of title, subtitle and/or author’s name.

Ex.: The Red Queen by Margaret Drabble – 2B’s in Drabble, Q in Queen

20 Point Tasks

20.1 Most Improved - Kathy KS’ Task: Pleasure Reading in the 1940s
Help Thread

Librarian Betty Rosenberg’s First Law of Reading, published in Genreflecting, is “Never apologize for your reading tastes.” My career of fifty years focused on helping others get what they wanted at the library. My interest in reading for pleasure, whatever that means to individuals, is based on that philosophy and my own reading habits. This task centers around the pleasure reading habits of individuals in the 1940s.

Choose one option below. Books with MPGs of Childrens, Middle School, etc. AND Graphic Novels, etc. are all allowed, as long as they fit the standard criteria for GR.
Required: State the option.

Option 1: Bestsellers
Bestsellers are the books readers choose to read as opposed to what others believe they should read.

Read a novel on the Publishers Weekly list of bestselling novels in the United States in the 1940s found on this list.

1940s Bestselling novels in the United States

Option 2: Armed Services Editions
ASEs were small paperback books of fiction and nonfiction that were distributed in the American military during World War II, from 1943 to 1947. Distributed to service members, they were enormously popular and provided them with respite from their duties. Read one of these titles, fiction or nonfiction. Select from the following lists on GR:

Armed Services Editions A Series September 1943

Armed Services Editions B-Series, October 1943

Armed Services Editions C-Series, November 1943

Armed Services Editions D-Series, December 1943

The ASE books were reprints, abridged, or "made" books (special anthologies of stories or verse), so any version of the title is acceptable as long as it fits GR guidelines.

Required: State which list you used.

Option 3: First Law of Reading
Read a book with a word of 4 or more letters in the title (subtitles excluded) found in: NEVER APOLOGIZE FOR YOUR READING TASTES. Letters may be used only as often as they appear in the target phrase.

Required: State the word.

20.2 Rookie at the Top: EmilyGraceR's: Jack of All Trades
Help Thread

When constructing my first ever challenge, I struggled to think of three options that stuck to one theme and also related to myself, as I am a bit of a jack of all trades- I have far too many interests to narrow down one straight theme for my first ever task, so lets throw three in the mix and hope one sticks! No question is a stupid question, I am more than happy to answer any questions in the help thread and check any books you are unsure on.

Choose an option and read one book for that option. Minimum 250 pages.

Option 1:
I am big on sustainability and recycling, and I am also a volunteer youth worker, so let’s smash those two ideas together for the first option!

Find a book that you have previously read with the MPG Youth, Teen or Young Adult, and read any other book by the same author.

For example:

If you previously read Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone

You can read The Casual Vacancy or Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

Required: state the original book.

Option 2:

Being a musician, I personally enjoy a good read about music, or musical figures!
Read a book that has either MPG music,
OR read a book from this list
Muscial Instruments in Title

Required: If using the list option, state the page of the list the book was found on.

Option 3:
My birthday is right at the end of this challenge on the 25th of August, and I am always excited to read a book published or set within my birth year.

Read a book first published within the year of your birth, or the year of my birth -1999

Required : State the the year of your birth or state that you're using 1999.

20.3 - Best Review - Joanne MI's task: The Number 40
Help Thread

For some reason I could not wrap my head around the decade of the '40's, and decided to devote this task to the number 40 itself.

No children's books. Your book must be at least 250 pages.

Choose one of the following options.
Required: state the option.

Option 1. The year I was 40 I had a 5 year old. I had a husband who worked 12 hour afternoons. Needless to say it was a a tiring year.
Read a book that has at least 2 of the following numbers in it's page count: 0, 1, 2, 4, 5. The two digits you use must be different (i.e. you cannot use 300, with 0 appearing twice).

Option 2. Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves is a folk tale from the One Thousand and One Nights. It was added to the collection in the 18th century by its French translator Antoine Galland, who heard it from Syrian storyteller Hanna Diyab. Read a Folklore book from the first 25 pages of this list: https://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/...

Required: State the list page where the book was found.

Option 3. Forty is the only number in the English language whose letters appear in alphabetical order. Read a book by an author whose initials are consecutive alphabetically. You may ignore the middle initial. Examples: Julia Kelly , A.J. Baime.

20.4 - Golden Oldies - Paula S's Task: (Mid)summer in Sweden
Help Thread

The last time I created a task for this challenge, back in 2019, I centered the task around Swedish spring traditions. This time the inspiration comes from how we celebrate summer in Sweden.

Read one book, from one of the options below.
Required: State the option you used.

Option 1: June 6 is the National Day of Sweden. It used to be just Flag Day, and until not so long ago it was a normal working day. Now there is at least some effort done to create a national celebration. As the Swedish flag is a yellow cross on a blue background.
Read a book with a cover that is at least 50% yellow and blue. The percentages of yellow and blue according to tineye should be added together to reach at least 50%. Both yellow and blue must be present on the cover according to Tineye.
Required: Post the cover.

Examples:
The Year of Living Danishly My Twelve Months Unearthing the Secrets of the World's Happiest Country by Helen Russell Princess and the Player (Strangers in Love, #2) by Ilsa Madden-Mills Laurinda by Alice Pung Springfield Confidential Jokes, Secrets, and Outright Lies from a Lifetime Writing for The Simpsons by Judd Apatow The Noble Servant (A Medieval Fairy Tale, #3) by Melanie Dickerson Our Short History by Lauren Grodstein

Option 2: Midsummer Eve is a major holiday in Sweden, to the point where I sometimes consider it the true National Day. It is a day of dancing around the midsummer pole, eating traditional midsummer foods such as pickled herring and strawberries, and spending time with family.
Read a book written by a single author whose first and last initials can be found in PICKLEDHERRING.

Option 3: Summer is prime vacation time. Many factories and other industries used to close down during July to give all the workers four weeks of vacation, but given how interconnected the world is now that is no longer possible. Most people still try to get several weeks off sometime between June and August, just not all workers at the same time, and temporary summer workers fill up the gaps if needed.
The word for the closing down of many industries during July was "industrisemestern".
Read a book whose title (not subtitle) contains a word of 4 or more letters made from the letters in INDUSTRISEMESTERN. Letters may only be used as often as they appear.
Required: State the word.

Option 4: This is the Golden Oldies task, so I would be remiss if I didn't include an option to read a classic.
Read a book first published before 1950 written by one of the authors from this Listopia list: Swedish classics
Any book by an author on this list will work.

20.5 - Bigger is Better - Tammy AZ Task: The Compelling and Delights of Travel
Help Thread

I've been travelling with my husband in an RV this Spring, touring the Southeastern states. In our travels we've visited many Civil War and Civil Rights sites and monuments. I've also been reading and buying related books and learning a lot.

For this task I'd like you to join me on the reading journey and read one book from one of the options below

No books with the MPG children or kids may be used.
MPG Sequential Art, Comics, Comic Book, or Manga are allowed

Option 1: Read a book from one of the following lists:

Civil Rights & Law: Then and Now (fiction and nonfiction)

War has no winners

American Civil War Books

Required: State the list and page

Option 2: Besides all the touring, we visited many local bars and pubs. Imagine my surprise when in a small Irish pub, in walks Robert Plant, it was truly a highlight. Read a book where the author initials can be found in ROBERT PLANT

20 Point Tasks

20.6 - It's A Fact- Julia103's Task: This is Jeopardy!
Help Thread

I enjoy watching the quiz show Jeopardy! and especially enjoyed Jeopardy! Masters which aired last month with 6 returning players who got to play multiple games before anyone was eliminated.

This is a one book task. Choose one option and read a book from that option.

Option 1: The contestants were: James Holzhauer, Mattea Roach, Matt Amodio, Andrew He, Amy Schneider, and Sam Buttrey. The show was hosted by Ken Jennings who won over 70 games during his time as a Jeopardy! contestant.

Read a book by an author whose first or last name matches the first or last name of any of these contestants or host. The name position does not matter (i.e. a book by Henry James could be used to match James Holzhauer.) However, the name used must be an exact match (i.e. Sam, not Samuel).

Required: State the name of the contestant

Option 2: Amy Schneider, who won 40 consecutive games in the regular season, is a trans woman. Mattea Roach, who won 23 games in the regular season and came in second in Jeopardy! Masters, identifies as non-binary.

To honor them, read a book from one of these lists:

A Book By a Trans or Non-Binary Author
Non-Binary (Genderqueer, Genderfluid, Gender-Unspecified, etc) Fiction and Memoirs
Gender Non-Binary Fantasy & Science Fiction
Novels by Trans Authors with Trans Protagonists

Required: State the list and the page of the list you found the book on.

20.7 Shorter is sweeter- Inge's Task: Enjoying Scotland
Help Thread

I am a passionate bookcrosser, where I like to let my books that I’ve read roam free and let them find a new reader. Bookcrossing is an international group, and they like to get together for meetings. This year there will be a convention in Scotland where I will be joining an international convention for the first time. In addition, a friend of mine moved to Scotland almost a year ago. I love to see pictures of all the nature she is hiking in now. This task will therefore be a task about Scotland!

This is a one book task. Choose an option from below and read one book for that option
Required: State the option

No books with the genre children/kids will be allowed for this challenge.

Option A) Read a book where all the letters of SCOTLAND can be found in the title. Subtitles are excluded.

Option B) Read a book that takes place for at least 50% in Scotland.
Required: If the setting not be clear from the description or Goodreads metadata, provide a reference.

Option C) Whisky or in Gaelic Uisge Beatha is a drink that they call ‘aqua vitae’ or water of life, and deeply founded in the culture of Scotland.

Read a book where both the first AND last name initials can be found in whisky OR uisge beatha.

20.8 - Nickels & Dimes- Lauren Jodi's task: Lost Cities
Help Thread

My lifelong fascination with the folklore of various cultures began when my mother gifted me a book of Greek myths. As an educator, I am also able to share my love of these tales with my students. One topic that is always popular in class is that of lost cities, i.e., cities that once existed and subsequently disappeared. They can be classified into two types: Ones that have been rediscovered, such as Troy, Pompeii and Xanadu, and those that have remained shrouded in mystery like Atlantis, El Dorado and Shangri-La. This task is dedicated to some of these lost cities.

This is a one book task, choose an option and read one book for that option.
REQUIRED: State the option you chose when posting.

Option 1: TROY
Renowned for being the focus of the Trojan War as depicted in Homer's epic poem, The Iliad, Troy, known as Wilusa in the late Bronze Age, was repeatedly built and destroyed over the centuries. It was ultimately abandoned and relegated to the realm of legend until it was rediscovered in Hisarlik in present-day Turkey in 1871.

Read a book set at least 50% in Greece or Turkey.

REQUIRED: If the setting is not stated in the Goodreads main page description, provide a reference when posting.

Option 2: MACHU PICHU
Often referred to as "The Lost City of the Incas", Machu Pichu is a 15th-century citadel located in southern Peru. It was constructed around 1420 only to be abandoned during the Spanish Conquest. While the American historian and explorer Hiram Bingham is credited with its rediscovery in 1911, there is cartographic evidence of the site as early as 1874.

Read a book with a 3 digit page count that is comprised of 3 of the following digits in any configuration - 0, 1, 2, 4, 7, 8, or 9. The numbers 1 and 4 can be repeated.

For example 141, 244, 409, 480

Option 3: ATLANTIS
Perhaps the most legendary lost city, Atlantis was described by Plato as either a maritime power submerged for attacking Athens or as an advanced civilization descended from Poseidon and destroyed due to its depravity. The theories of its location range from the Bahamas to Malta and even the North Pole. The most promising, however, is the ancient Minoan civilization on Crete, which was destroyed in the volcanic eruption of Thera and its subsequent tsunami.

Read a book shelved on the following list:
Atlantis Books

Required: State the page

Option 4: EL DORADO
El Dorado, or alternatively El Hombre Dorado ("The Golden Man") or El Rey Dorado ("The Golden King"), was a term used in the 16th century by the Spanish to describe the mythical ruler of the Muisca people of Colombia who, as part of an initiation rite, would cover himself in gold dust. The legend was ultimately expanded to encompass an entire city or kingdom of gold.

Read a book with "gold" or golden" in the title. Words must match exactly.

25.2 Robin P’s Task: Casablanca!
Help Thread

The film Casablanca was released in 1942. It features an American expatriate, Rick (played by Humphrey Bogart) and his lost love Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman), with the backdrop of the German occupation of France. It won the Best Picture Oscar and has consistently ranked among the best films of all time.

Read two books, from two different options.
Required: state the options

Option 1: The film is known for many iconic quotes, including “Round up the usual suspects” and “I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.” Perhaps the most famous – “Play it again, Sam” – is never actually said in the movie. Two other famous quotes are “We’ll always have Paris” and “Here’s looking at you, kid”. The latter was apparently added after Bogart said it to Bergman during a poker game in his trailer.

Read a book with a word of 4 or more letters in the title found in "WELLALWAYSHAVE PARIS" or "HERESLOOKINGATYOUKID" (Ignore the apostrophes and comma in the originals.) Subtitles excluded.

Required: State the phrase used and the word

Option 2: Casablanca is in Morocco in Northern Africa, although we may not immediately think of it as African. Africa contains 55 countries, per this Wikipedia list:

Read a book set at least 75% in any African country from the list. If the setting isn’t obvious from the GR main page , please provide verification.

Required: State the country

Option 3: Rick is considered an antihero. More than once he says, “I stick my neck out for nobody.” But it turns out he has moral principles and is even willing to sacrifice his personal romance, since “The problems of three little people don’t amount to a hill of beans in this crazy world.” Read a book from the first 25 pages of this list of antiheroes

25.4 Delicious Dee's Task: From Series Name to Author Name
Help Thread

Sometimes when I get in a reading funk and go looking for new authors, I pick a series that I’ve been reading where there is a character’s name in the series name and then I try to find a new to me author that matches either the first or last characters name. My task this season is based on that.

For this task – you will read 2 books – one from Book A and one from Book B. The books MUST have a combined minimum page count of 501 pages and Book B MUST be a new-to-you author.

No Children/Middle-Grade MPG
No Graphic Novels

Book A Read a book that has a characters name(s) in the series title – you may read any book in the series, but it must have at least 3 published books.

The character name(s) should appear as "Forename Surname", "Initials Surname" or "Title Surname"

Examples: Until Proven Guilty (J.P Beaumont #1)
Last Bus to Woodstock (Inspector Morse #1)
The Wire in the Blood, (Tony Hill & Carol Jordan #2)

The series title will be used as it appears on the book page - for example, although Blood Heir might also display as World of Kate Daniels, #13 on a Goodreads list, the individual book entry lists it as Aurelia Ryder, #1, so the latter should be used.

Book B Read a book by a single author where the author’s name (first or last) matches EXACTLY in both spelling and position, the character name for book A.

Required: state the character name you are using and that the author is new-to-you.

Notes:
a) If there are two character names in the series you may pick either one to use.
b) If the character uses initials – the initials of your author must match exactly
c) If the character uses an honorific or title – ignore that and use the name that is present.

Examples:
Book A: Among the Ruins (Rachel Getty & Esa Khattak #3)
Book B: Seraphina (Rachel Hartman) – Rachel for Rachel Getty; New to Me Author

Book A: Until Proven Guilty (J.P Beaumont #1)
Book B: The Perfect Wife (J.P. Delaney)

Book A: Wish You Were Here (Mrs. Murphy #1)
Book B: If the Shoe Fits (Julie Murphy) – Murphy for Murphy; New to Me Author

Amy got back to me about her task. She wasn't keen on opening up option #4 to all of Florida, so she's given a different option in its place.

25.5 Amy FL's Task: Go HEAT!
Help Thread

I live in Southeast Florida where summers are extremely hot, but right now the focus is on a different kind of heat: our Miami Heat have made it to the NBA Finals as a huge underdog. They, along with the NHL Florida Panthers, are bringing a lot of excitement to the South Florida sports scene.

This is a two-book task. Read two books, from two different options.
Required: list the options you’ve chosen in your post.

Option 1: Jimmy Butler won the Eastern Conference MVP award, but it could have easily gone to Caleb Martin for his awesome play on both offense and defense. Read a book by a single author whose initials can be made from any combination of JB and CM (JB, JC, JM, BC, CJ, etc.). Middle initials are also included - for example, J.M. Coetzee would be acceptable.

Option 2: Read a book where MIAMI HEAT is found in any combination of title, subtitle and/or author’s name. All letters must be used (two M’s, two I’s, two A’s, H,E,T), example: The Lost Girls of Willowbrook by Ellen Marie Wiseman.

Option 3: To recognize the amazing efforts of our basketball and hockey teams, read a book with the MPG Sports.

Option 4: The slogan for the playoffs is "White Hot Heat" and the fans are encouraged to wear white to the arena. Read a book with a cover that is at least 70% white using Tineye. A guide to using Tineye can be found here.

Required: post the cover.

25.6 JennRenee's Task: New Book Discoveries
Help Thread

Even though I have thousands of books on my TBR, I love to discover new books. It's fun to discover new authors, new series, new ideas. It is also fun just to fall down the rabbit hole of discovering.

This task is all about the discovery. Both book must be a new to you book.

Choose 2 different options and read a book from each option.
Required: state both books are new to you.

1 . Anticipated Books
Goodreads has many anticipated books lists by year. This is one my favorite ways to find new releases. SO many come out each year. I just search for the most anticipated books of the current year and have fun.

For this task read a book on either one of these lists.

2022 Anticipated Books
2023 Anticipated Books

Required: state the list used and the page number

2. Author Discoveries
When I fall in love with a book and its a new to me author, I find more books by this author and go click happy.

For this Task use an author you read for the first time this year (2023) and read another book by that author that is not a next in a series.

Required: State the author and when you first read that author.

3. Readers Also enjoyed
Another place I go to get click happy is the readers also enjoyed section from a just read and loved book.

For this task choose a loved book you finished this year (2023) and go to the readers also enjoyed section on the main page. Choose a book to read from that list.

Required: state book and when you read the first book.

25.7 Lisa MD's Task: I’ve Got Sand Between My Toes
Help Thread

Oh, sweet summertime… the smell of coconut suntan lotion, the roar of the ocean, and the feel of sand between the toes has me yearning for beach time. Fortunately, I live on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, so I can pack up my cooler, beach chair, and books, then hop in my car and be at Assateague Island or Ocean City, MD within 30 minutes for a day of fun in the sun.

Assateague Island is a barrier island that stretches about 37 miles along the Delmarva Peninsula, with most of it in Maryland and about a third in Virginia. The Virginia section is known as Chincoteague, home of the famous Misty of Chincoteague. I spent a lot of my youth camping in Chincoteague. I prefer digging my toes in the sand in the less populated and pristine beaches of Assateague, plus I like the company of wild ponies roaming the beach.

Ocean City, MD and Assateague were at one time connected, until a 1933 hurricane created an inlet in OC and separated the land masses. OCMD is a huge tourist destination in the summer. Its normal population is around 7000 people; however, summer weekends bring in over 300,000 people. The boardwalk, Trimpers Rides, Thrasher’s French Fries, Seacrets, Fagers Island, and Fisher’s Popcorn are some of the main attractions. At least once a year I brave the tourists and enjoy some Thrasher’s fries.

Choose 2 different options and read a book for each option.
Required: state the options.

Option 1: Read a book by an author whose first and last initial can be found in ASSATEAGUE ISLAND / OCMD. Letters may only be used as often as they appear. You may combine the two terms to find initials (e.g. for Mark Gatiss, M in OCMD and G in ASSATEAGUE).

Option 2: Read a book whose cover shows a person with their bare toes in the sand (i.e. no sandals, flip flops or similar footwear).
Required: post the cover.

Option 3: Anyone who has visited Assateague, OCMD or any beach for that matter understands the phrase, “HAPPIER THAN A SEAGULL WITH A FRENCH FRY.” Read a book whose title contains a word of 4 or more letters made from this phrase. Letters may only be used as often as they appear.
Required: State the word.

Option 4: OC native and country singer, Jimmy Charles, penned an anthem called, “It’s a Maryland Thing, You Wouldn’t Understand.” As an Eastern Shore of Maryland girl, the song represents all kinds of summer vibes. Read a book whose title contains a matching word of 3 or more letters (excluding “the” and “and”) from the song lyrics:

https://www.musixmatch.com/lyrics/Jim...

Required: state the word.

Optional: Watch the music video and enjoy my local beaches and summertime vibe:

I take a Bookmobile out to 5 different locations within our library service area to provide books and activities to children who may have barriers to visiting the main library. JUDE LAW. You can use any combination of the actors’ names (for example you could use T from Robert and W from Law for initials TW) but letters can only be used as often as they appear.

30.4 - Wayne's Task: I'm So Glad We Had This Time Together
Help Thread

It seems as though there has been quite a number of celebrities passing away recently, the most recent being football superstar, actor and civil rights activist Jim Brown, so I was quite delighted to discover that one of my favorites, Carol Burnett, was alive and well and hosting a celebration of her 90th birthday on TV. This task is in honor of Ms. Burnett and her groundbreaking show.

Read two books, from two different options.
Required: State your options

Option 1: Carol Burnett was born on April 26, 1933. Read a book that was first published ON or BEFORE that date. If you have the month but not the day, use the first day of the month. If you only have the year, use January 1 as the date

for example : Goodreads has the publication date listed only as "April 1933", assume it was published Apr 1st 1933.
Goodreads has "1933", you'd assume Jan 1st 1933

Option 2: The show would typically start off with Carol turning the house lights up and conducting a Q and A session with the audience. Quite often, someone would ask her to perform her famous Tarzan yell, and she would always oblige.

Read a book where ALL the letters in TARZAN can be found in the author's NAME.

Option 3: A large part of the show's success was the incredible comedic skill of the entire cast. What I enjoyed the most was their ability to ad lib. Tim Conway seemed to have a particular ability to make Harvey Korman crack up.

Read a book with a humor MPG.

Option 4: Carol's trademark character was that of a cleaning woman, complete with a mop and bucket.

Read a book from the list of Domestic Service

Required: State the page

Option 5: The Carol Burnett Show was a true variety show. Unfortuately for me, that meant that the music played wasn't my cup of tea. What I liked were groups like The Beatles, The Kinks, or Jefferson Airplane, just to name a few, but my favorite song by far was 96 Tears by ? and the Mysterians (and yes, the singer's name was ?. He'd gotten it legally changed.)

Read a book that either
A: Has the word "question" in the title or subtitle, singular or plural only.
or
B: has either 96 or 69 as the last two numbers of the page count
