Doc (docbronco) I enjoy reading sci Fi and Fantasy series (Dune, Song of Fire and Ice and Dark Tower = Awesome) and I have given up on the Riverworld Series by Farmer (Finished first 3 books but it is a struggle to continue).

I am torn between the Heechee series by Poul Anderson, Conan books by Howard or the Vlad Taltos series by Steven Brust.

Which would you recommend or maybe suggest another?

Ken (ogi8745) | 27 comments I would go with Vlad Taltos, then Conan. I havent read any of the Heechee books

Robin | 142 comments Are you into urban fantasy? If so, I'd give the Dresden Files a shot. This series is one of the giants of the genre, absolutely love the books!

Jen (jenlb) | 174 comments The Heechee series is by Fred Pohl :-) It's one of my favorite series so I'd recommend that. It's an interesting Universe, and has great characters in it (mainly Rob, and his computer generated psychiatrist/friend). It's not as action based as Conan is, but I think that it's well worth a read.

Doc (docbronco) Thanks Jen. You are correct. I got the names mixed up.

spikeINflorida | 12 comments Sorry Jen....but I was disappointed with book 2 Beyond the Blue Event Horizon of the Heechee series. Thats where I stopped.

Lori (lgildersleeve) | 2 comments I love the Vlad books by Brust. Be aware that there are two reading orders : publication vs. chronological.

message 8: by John (new)

John | 62 comments Try The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan or The Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind. The Dresden Files was mentioned and that's one of my favorite series. Another good series is by R.A. Salvatore.... Drizzt Do'Urden, the dark elf.

Kateb | 959 comments i loved the Cassandra series by joel shepherd. Although as an Australian author he isn't that well lknown, I have even re read it, which is what I do ony for something I really like

message 10: by Papaphilly (new)

Papaphilly Dan Simmons and his Hyperion Cantos is a must. I also suggest the Foundation series by Isaac Asimov. A true classic set of books.

Brook | 3 comments I just started "Green Rider" by Kristian Brittan, and I am enjoying it so far.

message 12: by Kateb (new)

I loved how he weaved it all together. Just an amazing set of books.

Saeed Sabbagh | 5 comments Conan by howard

James Gonzalez | 30 comments The Vlad Taltos series is one of my favorites. I would recommend it to anyone. Like Lori said, though, you have to beware of the order of the books. They are not told in chronological order, and you aren't warned ahead of time where the next book falls in the timeline. You just have to figure it out by what is going on in the story.

Well it all depends, what are you in the mood for?

message 18: by Ben (new)

Ben Nash | 118 comments I'm a fan of the Small Change series by Jo Walton. It's set in an alternate post-WWII where the U.S. never joined and there's an uneasy truce between UK and Germany. It gets pretty dark at times, but I loved it.

One of my early fond memories of a series is Zelazny's Chronicles of Amber. One of my dad's coworkers lent me the first two collected editions and I tore right through them. I reread them when I saw that they'd been collected in The Great Book of Amber and they're still good.

MadProfessah (madprofesssah) | 775 comments I agree with Papaphilly. However I would also recommend Peter Hamilton's COMMONWEALTH series (start with Pandora's Star and Judas Unchained) and Alastair Reynolds REVELATION SPACE trilogy. I actually like the two non-sequential books Chasm City and The Prefect more than the three in the RS trilogy.

These last two suggestions are for hard sf space opera fans.

K.S. | 3 comments I think I've read the Vlad Taltos series at least three times by now. Trying to figure out the chronology of it is the best part. I usually read it in publication order, as I feel that is the author's true intent, though I think I once tried it chronologically; didn't work that well. Still...great series, and still ongoing, so I'll probably re-read every time a new book comes out.
