Fiction book. Ants are Farming Aphids (milking them like cows). Main character is underground. Read in 1990's.

I tried Google and I don't think "Empire of the Ants" is the book I vaguely remember reading years ago as the plot description doesn't ring any bells. All I remember is the POV character underground and seeing ants milking aphids, treating them like cows. Any ideas?
