I read this around 2004/2005 but unsure of Publication date. I remember the story being: when characters from classic books (e.g. Elizabeth Bennett) gets tired of being in their own story and needs a break from it, someone (I think the mc was young female character) steps into the book to "cover" for the character while they're having their break. I think she needs to be careful not to change anything. I think one of the characters she's replaced doesn't come back(?) and it goes from here. Might have been a series. I think I can remember a scene on a houseboat. Thank you!

The Thursday Next series by Jasper Fforde, maybe? The first one is The Eyre Affair. If not, it might be on the Book-Jumping or Book-Travelling list.
