Haley | 222 comments Max nodded in approval at her plan, then went to his room. He threw a few necessities in a bag, then went outside. He put the small bag into the saddlebag, then went to Ace. He put out new oats, fed him an apple, and then began to brush him down.

Penny was talking softly to Anya as she was combing her mane. She didn't notice Max through her in depth conversation with the shaggy beast."I wonder if ill see the king. Ive heard awesome stories that hes almost a story high! And that he cries gold. Thats a little silly though but he is a king so who knows. "
Anya shook her head as if in response. Penny grinned and moved to her tail.

Haley | 222 comments Max slowed in his movements when he heard Penny muttering to herself. No, her horse, he amended as he looked over and saw what she was doing. He hadn't meant to be quiet, but he apparently hadn't been noticed. His ears caught some of the whispered one sided conversation, but other parts were too quiet for his ears. Smiling softly to himself, he 'accidentally' kicked the bucket of oats, not hard enough to spill it, but hard enough to make a noise. He figured she didn't want to be overheard in something like that, so it was easier just to alert her of his presence. Ace looked up at him in a questioning look, and he responded in a pat on the neck. "Nothing to worry about, I had a good reason, I swear it." He assured the horse quietly.

message 354: by [deleted user] (new)

Penny jumped at the noise. "Oh. Hey!" She smiled before looking at her horse in satisfaction. "I think she's ready for some action" Penny said giving Anya an apple. She snorted and took it, munching it happily. She kissed Anya on the nose before walking over to Ace. She gave him a quick pat.

message 355: by Haley (new)

Haley | 222 comments Max gave a nod of hello, pretending that he hadn't heard her speaking to her horse. She seemed happy as well to pretend it hadn't happened, though she honestly might not have noticed at all. He was ok with either, though. He quickly finished brushing Ace down, finishing the process with feeding the horse an apple. "Good." He said in response. He petted Ace's neck softly, lost in thought about the mission that had been assigned to them. Was Penny ready for something like this? She claimed she was, but she still only had a few weeks of training. Despite her lack of the few years of training, she was better than most of the knights and bandits in the kingdom. She was certainly a quick learner and was fast to grasp concepts.

message 356: by [deleted user] (new)

Penny glanced at Max. "Are you worried about the mission?" She asked him. She didn't want him to worry about her, she would be fine. She wasn't ranger quality yet but she always tried her best and believes she can make it. "You don't have to be worried about me"

message 357: by Haley (new)

Haley | 222 comments Max looked down at her. He wondered if that was just a good guess or if he was that easy to read. He looked away. Hm. He'd have to work on that. "No," He lied, "I'm not worried about it. You seem like you can handle yourself just fine." He said, still patting Ace thoughtfully.

message 358: by [deleted user] (new)

She smiled slightly "Well. I may be able to but im still worried." She gave Anya one last pat before heading inside. She needed her sleep for the journey tomorrow. She went inside and unstrung her bow before playing it against the wall with the quiver

message 359: by Haley (new)

Haley | 222 comments Max watched her leave, then turned back to Ace. "She'll be fine, I'm sure of it." He spoke softly, and the horse gave what appeared to be a nod in agreement. "And if not, then I'll ensure nothing happens to her. Either way, she'll be fine." He stayed in silence for a minute or two, then went back inside after patting Ace one last time.

message 360: by [deleted user] (new)

Penny tossed and turned all night. She finally fell into a light sleep around midnight. She dreamt of the mission and meeting the king but then everyone was burning and screaming. Penny sat up quickly a light sweat glistening. She looked around and ran a hand through her hair. Just first mission jitters

message 361: by Haley (new)

Haley | 222 comments Max quickly prepared for bed, then slept soundly through the night. He was worried, yes, but he'd been though enough missions to know that he couldn't change it, so there was no need for him to worry too much. Max woke shortly before dawn, quickly getting ready. He walked out to the kitchen and began preparing breakfast. The sun was just now peeking over the horizon.

message 362: by [deleted user] (new)

Penny got up wide awake from the excitement of the day ahead. She dressed quickly and walked out "Gooooood Morning!" She yelled quietlywondering if Max was awake yet . She smelled the cooking food and smiled knowing he was. She went out and checked on Anya and fed both horses their morning meal. "Ready for today? I know i am" She said filling up there buckets of water. She then started toting water to fill the barrel. It was her normal routine so she was used to it.

message 363: by Haley (new)

Haley | 222 comments Max glanced up as Penny walked into the room, obviously wide awake and excited, despite the worry that she'd expressed the day before. He didn't say anything when she asked him if she was ready, as she'd answered for herself, then went about to the river, not looking like she really expected an answer. He finished making breakfast and served it out onto two plates.

message 364: by [deleted user] (new)

After a couple of trips the barrel was full enough for the mornings uses so she came inside and hung up her cloak on the hook next to Maxs. She smiled feeling like she was finally part of something. She sat down and poured herself some coffee "Thanks for breakfast" She said before dalloping some honey in the black liquid.

message 365: by Haley (new)

Haley | 222 comments Max nodded. "Of course. Like I would starve you." He muttered the last part, quite enough so she probably wouldn't have heard it. He sat down at the table and slid her plate in front of her. He them poured himself some coffee, of course adding a generous amount of honey. He takes a drink of the black liquid, then begins eating his food. He eats quickly, eager to get on the road as soon as they can.

message 366: by [deleted user] (new)

She smirked slightly and slowed her eating a tad. She sipped her coffee slowly. "Ready for our big journey? Won't get all stiff in the saddle?" She laughed softly

message 367: by Haley (new)

Haley | 222 comments Max frowned at her speed, realizing that she might be doing the very same thing that he'd done to her on her first morning there. So he slows his eating to match her speed. "I'm ready. There's absolutely no doubt in my mind that I'll get stiff in the saddle though. What about you? Do you think you're ready?" He asked.

message 368: by [deleted user] (new)

She smiled "More then ready. Nervous too though. How long will it take to get there?" She asked before finishing the last couple bites and sipping her coffee

message 369: by Haley (new)

Haley | 222 comments Max gives a small shrug. "A day or two. I don't know. Shouldn't be too long." He says. He continued eating, keeping an eye on her plate to make sure that he wasn't done before her. He'd made it his personal goal, no matter how silly it seemed.

message 370: by [deleted user] (new)

She raised an eyebrow slightly at his deliberate slowness. She took the last bite and sat her fork down slowly, watching him. "All done. Im ready when you are"

message 371: by Haley (new)

Haley | 222 comments Max gave a small smile of triumph as she finished before him, then he quickly finished off what was left of his. Max stood up and walked to the door, where his cloak hung from a peg. He put it on then looked to Penny. "Then let's go." He said, slipping out the door, assuming she would follow.

message 372: by [deleted user] (new)

She quickly took a gulp of the last bit of her coffee and grabbed her cloak running after him. She swung it over her shoulders and fastened it. She walked to the stables and up to Anya. "All ready?" She asked the little horse before stroking her velvety nose

message 373: by Haley (new)

Haley | 222 comments Max walked to the stables and up to Ace, stroking him softly. He said nothing, though he could hear Penny mutter something to Anya. After a moment, he retrieved the saddle and saddle blanket, then saddled him.

message 374: by [deleted user] (new)

Penny did the same quickly. She attached all her gear and swung herself into the saddle. She urged Anya on out of the stable area. "Ready when you are" she grinned at the older ranger.

message 375: by Haley (new)

Haley | 222 comments Max led Ace out of the stable area, then swung himself into the saddle and urged his horse to Penny's. His bow rested on his lap as he nudged Ace onto the trail that they would be following.

message 376: by [deleted user] (new)

She smiled and followed him closely. She ran her free hand over her own bow. She felt a surge of happiness for finally being apart of something.

message 377: by Haley (new)

Haley | 222 comments Max, of course, stayed silent. His eyes swept left and right, then far away, then close, as was habit by now. He felt the small burst of excitement that came with a new mission, but he'd gotten used to the feeling by now.

message 378: by [deleted user] (new)

She looked around excitedly. "Are we going to camp outside?" She ased ttrotting up beside him. "Ive never pitched a tent before. Is it easy? Will i get to keep watch? We do keep watch dont we?"

message 379: by Haley (new)

Haley | 222 comments Max let out a soft sigh. He should've known that the silence wouldn't have lasted. Though he had started to grow accustomed to her company and endless chatter, and the ride would've doubtless seemed empty without the questions accompanying it. "No, we're most likely not going to camp outside. Unless we're miles away from a town and we only had an hour to set up camp, we're going to stay at an inn. Though there is a possibility that that will happen." He said.

message 380: by [deleted user] (new)

She nodded and fell into silence as they rode. The only sound was the soft fall of the horses steps and an occasional bird or two. "Its so quiet." Penny said glancing up into the trees.

message 381: by Haley (new)

Haley | 222 comments Max continued to scan the surrounding area as they rode, and glanced over at Penny when she fell into silence. It was such an odd occurrence, and he wasn't sure if he liked it or not. When she spoke nonstop, he simply sighed internally and went with it. But now that she'd, he felt the odd urge to fill the silence. He shook it off and continued to scan the area until she spoke. "It is." He responded. "Peaceful, in its own way."

message 382: by [deleted user] (new)

"More like creepy..." she muttered. Her fingers were playing with the hilt of her saxe as she rode. She pulled it out of sheath then let it drop back in. "What inn will we stay at?"

message 383: by Haley (new)

Haley | 222 comments Max shrugged slightly. "Wherever we end up." He said. He honestly hadn't planned on where they would stay, and wondered if it would just be easier to set up camp outside. His fingers tapped on the wood of his bow that lay across his lap as he considered thoughtfully. Ah, well. He'd face that problem when they got there.

message 384: by [deleted user] (new)

Penny took a drink of water and grimaced "tastes like an old boot" she closed her leather satchel and put it back. "Did we pack any coffee?" She asked with the sudden fear of the long journey without it

message 385: by Haley (new)

Haley | 222 comments Max laughed. He couldn't help it. He'd managed to get her so enticed into the ways of the Ranger that she panicked at the thought of going too long without a steaming mug of coffee. "Yes." He said when he'd stopped laughing. "We packed coffee. Coffee is a necessity, no matter where we're going."

message 386: by [deleted user] (new)

She felt a wave of relief. "Thank goodness. I swear my life depends on that stuff " she chuckled softly. She liked the sound of his laugh. She just wished he'd do it more often. She never could tell if he was pleased of her or not.

message 387: by Haley (new)

Haley | 222 comments Max nodded. He didn't say anything, instead looking back out and scanning the surrounding area. His fingers continued their soft tapping on his bow.

message 388: by [deleted user] (new)

She looked behind too. She didnt see anything out of the ordinary so sheturned back. She stayed silent though having nothing to say. She was excited but didnt want Max to explode from all her questions

message 389: by Haley (new)

Haley | 222 comments Max watched her shift in her seat to look behind them, then watched her shift back. He shook his head slightly, then said, "Don't move you're body when you look. Don't even move your head. Just your eyes. So they don't know that you're looking for them." He instructed.

message 390: by [deleted user] (new)

She frowned slightly "Sorry. Wasnt thinking" She felt dumb for making such a novice mistake in front of him. Anya whinnied and it was almost as if she was snickering. "Oh hush" pennt muttered.

message 391: by Haley (new)

Haley | 222 comments Max smiled slightly at her apology. "Don't apologize." He said. "Just don't do it again." He dropped the smile and continued scanning the side of the trail.

message 392: by [deleted user] (new)

"Are you worried people are following us? Why would they do that?" She asked scanning her side curiously. She saw the occasional wildlife of rabbits and a bird but nothing threatening.

message 393: by Haley (new)

Haley | 222 comments Max glanced at her from the corner of his eye, his eyebrow raised. "Do you want to be caught unaware by another group of bandits? Imagine how much worse that situation could've ended up if we hadn't spotted them before. And the fact that we'll be going undercover when we get there. It'll be no good if someone follows us there and goes blabbing about what we are." He says.

message 394: by [deleted user] (new)

"Makes sense i guess. I just dont get why someone would waste their time. Like.. they won't win. Against you anyways. " she smiled slightly "Which is why im extra glad you're here. I probably wouldnt win "

message 395: by Haley (new)

Haley | 222 comments Max made a small tsking sound. "The first step to success is believing in yourself." He said. "That being said, if you don't think you'll win, then you won't. If you go into a fight with the thought that you're going to win already there, then there's a chance you might. Which is why I'm invincible in my mind. Maybe not so much in real life, but not a soul can hurt me in my mind." He said with a small smile.

message 396: by [deleted user] (new)

"Its true in real life. Youre awesome. But yeah i guess that makes sense too. " she sat a little straighter and tried to think she was untouchable but there was still doubt clouding the back of her mind.

message 397: by Haley (new)

Haley | 222 comments Max watched her back straighten and her expression change, and couldn't help but smile. Maybe that was the wrong thing to say. Now she's going to be going around with a big head, thinking she's invincible. No, she was too smart for that.

message 398: by [deleted user] (new)

Penny stretched her arms up stretching her back muscles "Oh goodness i think im going to get stiff before you" she laughed slightly.

message 399: by Haley (new)

Haley | 222 comments Max shook his head slightly, adjusting in his seat slightly. He raised an eyebrow. "How much you want to bet?" He asked, glancing over at her.

((I must go to bed! Night!))

message 400: by [deleted user] (new)

"Well im not used to a full day of riding so of course ill lose" she smiled at him "Ill be fine though. " she said patting Anya's neck.
